GameFAQs Game of the Decade (2010s) Favouritism Bracket

By LUDWIG VON KOOPA - If I was the only voter in the world...

There's a big contest beginning March 26 that's going to last for over a month: The GameFAQs Game of the Decade (2010s) contest! GameFAQs.com users got to nominate up to ten games that released between the beginning of 2010 until the end of 2019. The top 128 have been entered into a bracket, which is reproduced below (after the page break, because it's lengthy).

I actually participated in that nomination process. If you want to know MY top ten games of the 2010s, here is my list in order of release date. As you might expect, it's heavy on things published by Nintendo or CAPCOM:
  1. Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective (2011, Nintendo DS)
  2. Kid Icarus: Uprising (2012, Nintendo 3DS)
  3. Pokémon Conquest (2012, Nintendo DS)
  4. Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward (2012, Nintendo 3DS)
  5. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Dual Destinies (2013, Nintendo 3DS)
  6. Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon (2015, Nintendo 3DS)
  7. Pocket Card Jockey (2016, Nintendo 3DS)
  8. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Spirit of Justice (2016, Nintendo 3DS)
  9. Splatoon 2 (2017, Nintendo Switch)
  10. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (2018, Nintendo Switch)
I didn't expect that I'd be so heavy on the DS and 3DS, though. And the Wii U got nothing. Whoops.

Only four of those games made it into the top 128, and it turns out that I've only played 19 of that top 128. In the interest of not subjecting you to repeated instances of me pretending to have played games so I look cultured, for this year's GameFAQs contest I'm not going to follow it round-by-round on KoopaTV. Feel free to vote for whatever you want, as long as it's not a game I loathe. The polls are up each day on the GameFAQs home page.

In previous years’ contests (check them out at the bottom of this article's footer), I dedicated an article for each contest's round, but the way this bracket is constructed that's just going to be very repetitive and boring. Instead, you get a super-long article where I go through round-by-round as if I'm the only voter, and what the contest would look like in that case. Sometimes I write why I would vote the way I would. Most times I just have no comment. Quite frankly, some of these games I've just never heard of, so I don't have much of anything interesting to say.

Oh, I set up a table of contents, because navigation might help:

ROUND 1

Division 1

(1) The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
(16) The Outer Worlds

(8) Halo: Reach
(9) Life is Strange

(5) Final Fantasy XV
(12) What Remains of Edith Finch

(4) Hollow Knight
(13) Tales of Berseria

(3) Monster Hunter: World
(14) Bravely Default: Flying Fairy

(6) Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

(15) The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky SC

Division 2

(1) Mass Effect 2
(16) Resident Evil 7: biohazard

(8) Fallout 4
(9) VVVVVV

(5) Borderlands 2
(12) Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night

(4) Horizon Zero Dawn
(13) Fortnite

Fortnite would be a bottom five game for me in this bracket, so I'd vote for anything over it.

(3) Resident Evil 2
(14) Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair

(6) DOOM
(11) INSIDE

I think this match was purposefully done just to put two ALL-CAPS games against each other. That said, I've never heard of INSIDE. Wikipedia says it won multiple awards at The Game Awards 2016, which we unfortunately covered, but if you ctrl + f the log, INSIDE isn't mentioned once. Neither were the award categories it won.

(7) Fire Emblem: Awakening
(10) Deus Ex: Human Revolution

Normally, I should vote for Fire Emblem: Awakening. It's one of the games I've played on the list, and I did go to the end. However, I also blame it for nearly making the Fire Emblem franchise completely unrecognisable from its preceding Tellius glory, and I absolutely loathe Chrom. Allowing the other KoopaTV staff members to give Fire Emblem: Awakening KoopaTV's GOTY 2013 award is the worst decision I've ever made with KoopaTV. I didn't write this shit:
Awakening truly propels the Fire Emblem franchise in an outstanding mainstream A-list direction out of its niche shadows.”
It was “niche” before, but it was also actually GOOD.

(2) Bloodborne
(15) Call of Duty: Black Ops

Division 3

(1) Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
(16) Tekken 7

(8) The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds
(9) Bayonetta

(5) Marvel's Spider-Man
(12) Dead Space 2

(4) Minecraft
(13) Dota 2

I really don't like multiplayer online battle arenas. I also really don't like Minecraft or the dumb kids who play it (or its younger cousin, ROBLOX). That said, I have more animosity towards Minecraft.

(3) Undertale
(14) Octopath Traveler

Speaking of animosity, here's Undertale! I hear Octopath Traveler is actually a good game and can win on its own merits without me hating Undertale, but after what the Undertale fanbase did in 2015 to win the GameFAQs Best. Game. Ever. contest, I will forever anti-vote it.

(6) Shovel Knight
(11) Dragon's Dogma

(7) Devil May Cry 5
(10) Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze

(2) Super Mario Odyssey
(15) Mortal Kombat 11

Division 4

(1) Grand Theft Auto V
(16) Baba Is You

I literally wrote an article back in 2013 with the headline, “GTA V — A Danger to the Industry” (something about production costs), and the gaming industry has forever changed afterwards. In the interest of consistency, I'll vote for Baba Is You, even though I don't know what that is. I can assure you, however, that I am not a Baba, and you probably aren't either.

(8) Cuphead
(9) XCOM 2

(5) Persona 4 Golden
(12) FTL: Faster Than Light

(4) Red Dead Redemption
(13) Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective

(3) Xenoblade Chronicles
(14) Splatoon 2

It's really interesting that these two are paired up in round 1. Obviously, you saw my top 10 list, so you know which team I'm on. Splatoon 2 (and its prequel) has made incalculable contribution to KoopaTV, with all of our Splatfest coverage and everything else. I gotta say, the addition of Salmon Run has multiplied how much more fun the sequel is compared to the first Splatoon. It also has stronger single-player content, especially if you get the Octo Expansion.

(6) Overwatch
(11) Death Stranding

I'm not a fan of Overwatch. That said, I've written many articles about Death Stranding while it was in development, and none of them were brimming with positivity. It's nonsense. I gave it joke nominations in KoopaTV's GOTY 2019 just so it could lose every category, which it did. Hideo Kojima is a menace, and his fans are insufferable.

(7) Dragon Age: Inquisition
(10) Ori and the Blind Forest

(2) Fire Emblem: Three Houses
(15) South Park: The Stick of Truth

Division 5

(1) The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
(16) Assassin's Creed Odyssey

(8) Mass Effect 3
(9) Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty

(5) Stardew Valley
(12) Destiny

(4) Super Mario Galaxy 2
(13) Return of the Obra Dinn

(3) Fallout: New Vegas
(14) The Stanley Parable

(6) Dark Souls III
(11) Dishonored

(7) The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth
(10) Nioh

(2) God of War
(15) The Talos Principle

Division 6

(1) Persona 5
(16) Heavy Rain

(8) Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag
(9) Sid Meier's Civilization V

(5) Sonic Mania
(12) Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA

(4) Super Meat Boy
(13) Slay the Spire

We just went through more than a whole division without an explanation of why I chose the games I chose, but Super Meat Boy got chosen over Slay the Spire just because we got a guest article back in 2013 saying positive things about Super Meat Boy, so I might as well vote for it here. Your contributions matter, folks.

(3) Portal 2
(14) Tomb Raider

(6) Kingdom Hearts III
(11) Disco Elysium

(7) Animal Crossing: New Leaf
(10) Street Fighter V

Spoiler alert: Animal Crossing: New Leaf is going to make a wild run in this bracket, simply because this side of the bracket is barren in terms of things I care about. Even though I don't want to go near Animal Crossing: New Horizons...

(2) Red Dead Redemption 2
(15) Dying Light

Division 7

(1) Dark Souls
(16) Hotline Miami

(8) Rocket League
(9) Dragon Ball FighterZ

This is the hardest match for me to pick which to vote for. We had a big campaign to get Dragon Ball FighterZ onto the Nintendo Switch, but the actual game was... whatever. Versus having a whole article that was asking if the KoopaTV staff should all buy Rocket League to play together, which we actually did, but that was kind of a big mistake. It's not our kind of game.

I guess Dragon Ball FighterZ is better based on that?

(5) Yakuza 0
(12) The Witness

(4) Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain
(13) Dead Cells

(3) Batman: Arkham City
(14) Xenoblade Chronicles 2

(6) BioShock Infinite
(11) Terraria

BioShock Infinite doesn't seem like my kind of game.

(7) Diablo III
(10) Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward

(2) The Last of Us
(15) Crusader Kings II

I've never heard of Crusader Kings II, but I really didn't like The Last of Us as a movie (part 1, part 2, part 3), and I REALLY didn't like seeing its sequel at E3 2018. Overrated garbage series.

Division 8

(1) The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
(16) Subnautica

(8) Fate / Grand Order
(9) Journey

(5) Final Fantasy XIV Online: A Realm Reborn
(12) Crypt of the NecroDancer

(4) Uncharted 4: A Thief's End
(13) Mario Kart 8

(3) Pokémon HeartGold / SoulSilver Version
(14) Night in the Woods

(6) Celeste
(11) Rayman Legends

(7) Divinity: Original Sin II

(10) Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft

(2) NieR: Automata

(15) Bayonetta 2

ROUND 2

Division 1

(1) The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
(8) Halo: Reach

(5) Final Fantasy XV
(4) Hollow Knight

(3) Monster Hunter: World
(11) Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch

(10) Bastion
(2) Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age

Division 2

(16) Resident Evil 7: biohazard
(9) VVVVVV

(12) Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night
(4) Horizon Zero Dawn

(3) Resident Evil 2
(6) DOOM

(10) Deus Ex: Human Revolution
(2) Bloodborne

Division 3

(1) Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
(9) Bayonetta

(5) Marvel's Spider-Man
(13) Dota 2

While I'd vote this way against the likes of Dota 2 either way, I can at least appreciate that Kamek seemed to enjoy Spider-Man on his stream.

(14) Octopath Traveler
(6) Shovel Knight

Quite frankly, both of these games I really should've actually played. I mean, getting to play Octopath Traveler is free in that there's a demo of it. I ultimately voted for it over Shovel Knight because I'm pretty sure I vaguely like SNES-style Japanese RPGs over 8-bit Mega Man-esque games.

(10) Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
(2) Super Mario Odyssey

I don't actually really LOVE any 3D platforming games. It's not a genre I like, and it makes me an unreliable oddball given the kind of games you might expect to be adored on KoopaTV. However, I do like many 2D platforming games, and generally prefer 2D to 3D. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is absolutely EXCELLENT. And Mario not being in it is obviously a plus.

Division 4

(16) Baba Is You
(8) Cuphead

(5) Persona 4 Golden
(13) Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective

(14) Splatoon 2
(6) Overwatch

(10) Ori and the Blind Forest
(2) Fire Emblem: Three Houses

Division 5

(1) The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
(9) Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty

(5) Stardew Valley
(4) Super Mario Galaxy 2

No one really ever talks about Super Mario Galaxy 2. It's almost like it never even released. I admit that I don't own it, since I pretty much boycotted it after my extreme dissatisfaction with Super Mario Galaxy's trash minigame. I never really sat down and wrote about it on KoopaTV. This was the last star I got in Super Mario Galaxy because it's extremely difficult—it's formally called Dreadnought's Garbage Dump. Since that was the last thing I did in Super Mario Galaxy, that horrible minigame (failing over and over) was my lasting impression, so I skipped Super Mario Galaxy 2 because I decided the entire game is bad.

Meanwhile, over half of the KoopaTV staff has positive things to say about Stardew Valley, and Kamek loves to stream and talk about it with Witch Princess late into the night.

(14) The Stanley Parable
(6) Dark Souls III

(7) The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth
(15) The Talos Principle

Division 6

(1) Persona 5
(9) Sid Meier's Civilization V

(12) Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA
(4) Super Meat Boy

Despite Super Meat Boy winning before because I at least recognise it, I decided to apply the “when in doubt, RPG > platformer” rule.

(3) Portal 2
(6) Kingdom Hearts III

(7) Animal Crossing: New Leaf
(2) Red Dead Redemption 2

Division 7

(16) Hotline Miami
(9) Dragon Ball FighterZ

(5) Yakuza 0
(4) Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

(14) Xenoblade Chronicles 2
(11) Terraria

(10) Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward
(15) Crusader Kings II

Division 8

(16) Subnautica
(9) Journey

(12) Crypt of the NecroDancer
(13) Mario Kart 8

I consider Crypt of the NecroDancer to be a proxy for Cadence of Hyrule: Crypt of the NecroDancer Featuring The Legend of Zelda. (Don't worry, I'm not considering it among the games I've ACTUALLY played.) While the game is obviously polished and I have a favourable opinion of it, I find it difficult to keep voting for it given that I only like it when I turn its main gimmick off.

(3) Pokémon HeartGold / SoulSilver Version
(11) Rayman Legends

For at least the first year I had a Wii U, Rayman Legends was my most played game (not counting Miiverse). Still, that's... not enough to put it above Pokémon SoulSilver. While I don't like Johto as a region, it would be unjustifiable historical revisionism to not give Pokémon SoulSilver shared credit in making Generation 4 the best one of the Pokémon series.

(7) Divinity: Original Sin II
(2) NieR: Automata

ROUND 3

Division 1

(1) The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
(4) Hollow Knight

Don't forget that Breath of the Wild is a bad direction for The Legend of Zelda. Speaking as someone who dislikes open world games.

(3) Monster Hunter: World
(2) Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age

Division 2

(16) Resident Evil 7: biohazard
(12) Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night

(3) Resident Evil 2
(10) Deus Ex: Human Revolution

Division 3

(1) Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
(5) Marvel's Spider-Man

(14) Octopath Traveler
(10) Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze

Division 4

(8) Cuphead
(13) Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective

(14) Splatoon 2
(2) Fire Emblem: Three Houses

While these picks have been... I hope self-explanatory, maybe I should go into this clash of Nintendo Switch games a little more? Well, it's still self-explanatory. Splatoon 2 for me is a Top 10 game of the 2010s, and Three Houses isn't. Still, I'm more confident in the Fire Emblem series due to Fire Emblem: Three Houses, and I'm happy I bought it. It just has a lot of flaws with how it does its different routes... and I really dislike Byleth as a protagonist.

Still, I actively play both Splatoon 2 and Fire Emblem: Three Houses, and I'm on my third playthrough in the latter. (Golden Deer house on New Game+ Maddening. Leonie is an inconsiderate bitch. I don't hold that against the game.) Having finished the game twice and working on that third playthrough, it's definitely obvious that the monastery as the central location is a bad idea and it affects the game in many ways, from making the plot nonsensical to making repeated playthroughs a total chore with its extremely dragged out exploration.

Division 5

(9) Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty
(5) Stardew Valley

(14) The Stanley Parable
(7) The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth

Division 6

(1) Persona 5
(12) Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA

At some point I needed to express the fact that I still think putting Joker into Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was a mistake.

(3) Portal 2
(7) Animal Crossing: New Leaf

Division 7

(16) Hotline Miami
(5) Yakuza 0

(14) Xenoblade Chronicles 2
(10) Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward

Division 8

(16) Subnautica
(13) Mario Kart 8

Why did Subnautica get this far? There's a positive reason for it, and it's because Kamek loves the game and considers his review of Subnautica to be his magnum opus KoopaTV article. (I disagree with him on that, but I don't want to take his enthusiasm away.)

But...I don't want to give it the victory over Mario Kart 8 since I still hold some pride that I'm in it. Silly reason, and I should probably just vote for Subnautica anyway.

(3) Pokémon HeartGold / SoulSilver Version
(2) NieR: Automata

Similar to the above, NieR: Automata got to Round 3 based on Wendy's pretty good streaming session of it.

ROUND 4

Division 1

(4) Hollow Knight
(2) Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age

I just want to point out that both of these games make me fairly happy. I have a Hollow Knight plush (and the game), though I also wish I had a Dragon Quest plushie (specifically of Slime). Dragon Quest XI S is not only “extremely impressive” but it also won KoopaTV's Game of THAT Year 2019 award. I'll say this, however: Hollow Knight is the best “Metroidvania” I've ever played. Better than Super Metroid.

Division 2

(12) Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night
(3) Resident Evil 2

Division 3

(1) Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
(10) Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze

Division 4

(13) Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective
(14) Splatoon 2

We're now at the point where my pre-determined favourites list is clashing. Why Ghost Trick over Splatoon 2? It may be unfair, but I'm using Ghost Trick—which is an amazing CAPCOM adventure game in its own right—as an Ace Attorney proxy. And there's just not much other games can do to best that. Sorry.

Division 5

(5) Stardew Valley
(7) The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth

Division 6

(12) Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA
(7) Animal Crossing: New Leaf

Division 7

(16) Hotline Miami
(10) Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward

Division 8

(13) Mario Kart 8
(3) Pokémon HeartGold / SoulSilver Version

While Johto isn't a good region, I actually don't enjoy Mario Kart 8's game design (as opposed to me loathing Mario Kart Wii's) and I think its DLC practices are scandalous. There's a reason that I don't think I've ever accepted random Koopaling fans’ invitations to go play Mario Kart 8 with them.

Quarterfinals

(2) Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age
(12) Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night

(1) Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
(13) Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective

If I'm voting for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate to win over Ghost Trick, then the finals shouldn't be a surprise, right?

(5) Stardew Valley
(7) Animal Crossing: New Leaf

(10) Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward
(3) Pokémon HeartGold / SoulSilver Version

Semifinals

(2) Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age
(1) Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

(7) Animal Crossing: New Leaf
(10) Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward

There are so many games in this bracket that I'd rate over Animal Crossing: New Leaf. It's the beneficiary of very favourable bracket placement. But if you want to give me Animal Crossing social club points for it reaching the semifinals of what is supposed to be a favouritism-based bracket... go ahead.

Finals

(1) Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
(10) Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward

Even if this was Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors, I would still vote for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate over it. I firmly believe that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is the most robust and finely-tuned Super Smash Bros. game ever made. The game mechanics are a joy to explore and put into action, and I feel awesome while playing. It's deep, yet easy to execute on. It features awesome music (remixes and ports) and my favourite characters, like myself, my father, and Jigglypuff.

While I think overall the game's DLC content isn't even good (not counting the game balance patches), there's more than enough base content to satisfy me.

Feel free to try to lobby Ludwig to change his mind on any of the votes in the comments section. After all, that might influence how he votes in the actual contest, which begins March 26. You can also try to get him to elaborate his decisions, though many of them come down to him not knowing what another game is, or him having a genre or publisher preference.

In 2018, GameFAQs held the Character Battle X.
In 2017, GameFAQs had a Best Year in Gaming contest, which was a bad idea.
The Best. Game. Ever. contest was held in 2015.
In 2013, GameFAQs held the Character Battle IX.

  1. Pokemon Conquest as #3? So your tastes in games other than "Visual Novel" style games ISN'T entirely ridiculous, I see.

    2. I didn't want to stress myself out by trying to come up with a favouritism order among that 10, and maybe putting it by release date would at least be interesting.

Just know that those 10 are higher in my eyes than anything else from the decade.
