KoopaTV Quarantined For Ebola! Hiatus?!

By LUDWIG VON KOOPA - A Koopa Kwooranteen.

KoopaTV just had our quarterly meeting for all our staff members in our office in Sierra Leone. We have some exciting things to share with you in the upcoming months.

Now, let me explain the Sierra Leone office. You're not going to find the address for that in our Contact page because we don't operate out of there all the time. But if you're curious, it's in Freetown right next to a prison. (Not saying which one!) It's one of the only places on the planet we can afford to rent out with our advertising revenue. KoopaTV's staff talks to one another all the time over the Internet, but there is a certain element to collaboration that you can only achieve from physically being in the same room as one another. If you're ever an employer or you work for one, you can understand or should ask about your job's policy on working remotely from the office. There is a balancing act between that synergistic element you get when being in the same room and granting freedom to your employees!

Of course, having an office in Sierra Leone isn't convenient for anyone, but hey, I DO have experience in Africa.

Kooky (or Ludwig Von Koopa) goes to Africa in 7 Continents For 7 Koopas!
We can talk about the symbolism here another time.

Unfortunately, the Centers for Disease Control currently says Sierra Leone is an Ebola-prone area, and all travelers coming out of there must enter a 21-day quarantine. We don't have Ebola! At least, I don't think we do! None of us are showing symptoms! I mean, Kamek was coughing a bit, but he had a cold before even coming to Africa! Rawk was totally fine, although he did spend a lot of time in the bathroom. And I vomited a few times, but I always do that on airplanes!

Monitor Your Munchies

BY LUDWIG VON KOOPA - Eating while gaming and other issues of hygiene.

Let's take the time to talk about gaming hygiene issues in this column. I'll admit, I'm guilty of some hygienic misdeeds. ...Not going to say which ones, though.

But some hygienic issues in general include not brushing your teeth, not washing your hands often, forgetting to take showers, not using deodorant, and eating while playing videogames. We'll deal with that last one (and the second), although I hear convention goers have a particularly hard time with the third and fourth of those.

Let's be frank: Eating while playing videogames can be disgusting. If you're using utensils, then it's fine. ...But if you're not, then you are dooming your hardware.

From Know Your Meme, it's... Dorito Pope Geoff Keighley!
Encouraging bad hygiene for gamers everywhere while making fun of gamers.

Please do not eat anything that will leave a residue on your fingers while playing videogames. And please do not ask to borrow anything I own while you're doing so. It is gross. I like to keep my hardware in good quality. You should too. ...But wait, you might notice something... hypocritical.

What HAPPENED to the Amiibos?

By LUDWIG VON KOOPA - They don't look right.

Hat tip to Joystiq for acquiring and collecting this gallery of Nintendo's fresh-off-the-production-line first Amiibo set.

My role here is to ponder what the hell happened between the amazing quality of the Amiibos at E3 and these things. If you want a comparison between what we all thought these would end up being like, go ahead and go to Nintendo's official Amiibo website. The IDEAL Amiibo pictures are there. They're also right here:

This is what Amiibos should look like.

Who To Vote For? A Week Until Mid-Terms 2014!

By LUDWIG VON KOOPA - Mid-terms as in midway through the presidential cycle. Not, you know, a mid-term exam.

I was thinking about only writing an article on November 4, 2014 telling you to vote.

But if I'm really serious about trying to turn out your vote, then I should give you a one week notice, right? If you are an American citizen 18 or over as of November 4, you are eligible to vote in this election. Who is up for election? Every House seat in the country, a third of the Senate, and... a lot of the governors. But if you are not currently registered to vote, then you're... not eligible this time.

UNLESS you reside in this lucky list of states that allow same-day voter registration. That means you can register to vote and vote. On the same day!

Where do you vote? Go to your favourite search engine, put the name of your state and "Secretary of State". So if you live in Georgia, put in "Georgia Secretary of State" which will lead you to their site. Then it should have in a prominent location information about voting and elections. Click that. You should be greeted with a bunch of information that will let you know who is running, what the ballot will be like, and the location of voting (you can input your details into the look-up that should be there) and anything you might need to know or bring with you.

Herman Cain's voter information. ...By the way, he didn't supply this, I got it myself. Creepy, right?

It's all dandy that you're armed with that information, but how do you vote? If you haven't been following the politics in your area, you might be confused or uninformed. So what to do?

When Is Marth Going To Learn English?

By LUDWIG VON KOOPA - Roy of Pherae too.

While I was conversing with some Nintendo and Super Smash Bros. series fans, an interesting question was brought up: Why does Marth still speak Japanese, even in Super Smash Bros. 4? He has been in America for 13 years now. It's not like he just got off the boat! What's he doing? He is now the only character in the localized version of Super Smash Bros. to still be talking in Japanese, but his games have been in America already!

Roy and Marth, the Fire Emblem guys in Super Smash Bros. Melee, are loyal to Japan.
Marth will stay Japanese to the end. And hopefully that other dude isn't in the game.

Not to mention that his fangirl, Lucina, speaks perfect English. And she was PRETENDING TO BE MARTH. If I was pretending to be someone, I'd imitate their language, too.

Ludwig's Smash Bros. Wii U Post-Thoughts, Speculation, and APOLOGIES!

By LUDWIG VON KOOPA - Boy, did I really screw up.

At KoopaTV, we pride ourselves on being on the right side of history. We're happy to be correct! Which is why it's really shameful when we're wrong on something. So before I talk about all the amazing things from yesterday's Nintendo Direct... erm, "Super Smash Bros. For Wii U 50-Fact Extravaganza", I have to apologize.

I wrote an article last year in July entitled, "Smash 4 DOES HAVE a Story Mode". My liberal (not in the political sense — I'd never stoop that low!) usage of capitalization in that article title is the reason why only "APOLOGIES" is in all-capital letters for this article.

As revealed yesterday, Super Smash Bros. 4 does not have a story mode. If you look at my article's main source, they source Eurogamer, which sources Polygon. As in, the originator of the information that there would be a story mode comes from Polygon. The same Polygon that we warn you to stay away from because of their duplicitous information. Case in point, right? Polygon quoted Sakurai as saying,
"There will be a single player [campaign]"
See those brackets? Polygon added those. Sakurai didn't say that. Polygon MADE THAT INFORMATION UP and then it spread. I apologize for not doing my due diligence. At the very least, I was wise enough to recognize that Kotaku was a bad source at that time period! That type of misinformation spread is the very same way that a ton of sites reported lies about Herman Cain during his presidential run! (I bring that up because Herman Cain brought it up recently.)

NOW WITH THAT OUT OF THE WAY, LET'S TALK ABOUT... ME!

I'm so excited I can't contain myself.

KoopaTV's Live Reactions To Smash Wii U's 50-Fact Extravaganza!

By LUDWIG VON KOOPA - It ended up being over fifty.

Here are our live reactions to the Super Smash Bros. For Wii U 50-Fact Extravaganza presentation, shown on the Nintendo Direct site here. I'm Nintendork 13 13, your host. Rawk is himself, and KoopaTV friend Ryudragon29 (we call him Mariosun90) shows up after all the action is done.

...Not only do we live-react to Smash 4, but we also live-grade the caption contest started yesterday! Scroll down to the very bottom to see the winner!

Oh yeah. Best part.

Win An OR/AS Demo Code! Caption Contest!

By LUDWIG VON KOOPA - Starting now! Until the Live Reaction log on Thursday the 23rd.

Ludwig has obtained a Pokémon Omega Ruby and Aqua Sapphire demo code for the 3DS in his e-mail, thanks to The Pokémon Company International. Instead of using it for himself... He is going to give it away to one skilled KoopaTV reader!

Long-time KoopaTV readers should notice that we love to caption our photos that we post in our articles. And now, you'll have the opportunity to do so! Below is a photo of some Rare Ltd. employees, presumably doing their best to promote Kinect Sports.

Comment your best caption for the above photo in this article's comments section. Up to two entries per person. Anyone can enter. Please do not comment anonymously so we can identify who to give the code to! (And then give it to you privately so no one else can take it.) ...And if your comment is NOT a caption entry you should probably make that clear.

I personally like to think those three Rare blokes are like the KoopaTV staff, but that's just me. You can caption from any angle you'd like!

Your entries will be judged by the KoopaTV staff, and the winner will be announced in tomorrow's (Thursday, October 23) Live Reaction Log. Because tomorrow we're going to Live-React to the Super Smash Bros. For Wii U informational stream hosted by Nintendo. That starts at 6 PM Eastern on Thursday, so you have more than a day to come up with up to two captions. (Two chances to win one prize!)

By the way, caption contests are something we've always wanted to do on KoopaTV since the beginning (with enough frequency to make it its own category of article), so if we get enough interest for this we'll do more of these.

Stay witty, my friends.

Update: Made a video too.

Ludwig does not care about Omega Ruby or Alpha Sapphire at all, so he is happy enough to part with his code. Take it by commenting in the comments section! Be a good sport and share this contest to your friends, too!

This is a much easier contest to win than the KoopaTV Guest-Posting Contest. The winner of that received her prize as promised, so you can trust KoopaTV!
The winner is buried within this Reaction Log. This contest was graded live!
KoopaTV is holding yet ANOTHER giveaway. This time it's if you voted.

Choice: Texas — Has It Been Aborted?

By LUDWIG VON KOOPA - They never released the rest of the game.

Remember Choice: Texas? Sure you do. It's that text web-based educational game about women having babies and you need to go through their lives and choose if they should abort the babies or not. KoopaTV has covered it since it was announced (...or a while after that), to its delayed development, and, well, it came out five months ago.

KoopaTV has vowed to review the game when it came out. But we never did. Why? It's not finished. Since it was released, there have only been two available stories to play of five. The other three have been "coming soon" since the game launched in mid-May.

Choice: Texas Latrice and Leah stories available.
Home page of the Choice: Texas site, slightly edited for spacing. It's looked like this for five months.

Shulk The Pokémon

By LUDWIG VON KOOPA - Air Slash! Back Slash! A Vision!

It suddenly dawned on me: Shulk, supposedly of Xenoblade Chronicles fame (and also in Super Smash Bros. 4), is actually from the Pokémon series.

Shulk's (Xenoblade Chronicles) Pokémon moveset.
Well? What would YOU do?

The moves you see above are Power Trick, Air Slash, Secret Sword, and Future Sight. His ability is, of course, Stance Change.

Let's see what Shulk picked.

So... About ROCKSOAP's Smash 4 Roster Analysis...

By LUDWIG VON KOOPA - Even our guest posters should be held accountable!

A bit over a year ago, KoopaTV had a 5-part series of guest articles submitted by some dude named RockSoap. We liked them so much we gave him the "Best KoopaTV Guest Poster" award for 2013.

His guest articles were entitled "Smash 4 Character Roster Analysis!" He went through a lot of characters and gave his thoughts on the many Nintendo characters. Including their chances of returning.

Well, since we now know the actual final roster, we can grade our guest poster. (We wish that actually rhymed.) ...Roster spoilers, obviously.

Rosalina was entirely missed by RockSoap!

If Only The Videogame Industry Could Engage In Ebola Opportunism

By LUDWIG VON KOOPA - But I have an idea in here anyway in case anyone wants it.

One large shame about the videogame industry is that the time between idea conception and product realization is very long. It's the longest of any creative medium. Compare it to, say, KoopaTV. KoopaTV can take any hot-button issue and have an article out that day.

The videogame industry has to wait years before that realization. That could be months, but then it probably won't end up very good. An exception is Trayvon Tyson's Punch-Out!!, critically acclaimed by everyone who has actually played it.

Take Ebola, for example. Ebola is something that is on everyone's mind right now. After all, it's a very scary virus that melts your insides that has a very high death rate and no known cure, and it's being imported to the United States from Africa because President Barack Hussein Obama refuses to issue a travel ban. If a videogame based on Ebola came out now, imagine the demand! Everyone in the world has (or wants to have) a connection to Ebola. It'd be an instant classic.

Unfortunately (for profit), Ebola will likely be eradicated from civilization in six months. Certainly less than a year. You can't make a good survival horror that would please the likes of Feriku in that short time frame while the demand is still high. Not even an action horror!

The upside is that while videogames take the longest to make, people enter the industry because the profit potential is the highest of any creative medium. I don't have stats to back that up, but that's conventional wisdom! Videogames are the most complicated creative medium. It has audio, video, text, and interactivity. It has the most resources going into it, so therefore it has the greatest potential pay-off.

But again, that means that you can't capitalize on pop culture fads. You have to predict them well in advance, and if you're doing that successfully, you should be in financial trading, not the videogame industry. Or you could recycle old games that happen to fit and re-release them.

Still, I (and Rawk... just a little bit) came up with my own Ebola idea. And I'm going to make it public domain. So feel free to use it, Nintendo! Everything between the red lines I am not making my property or KoopaTV's property. No royalty necessary!

The IRS Ought To Audit Feminist Frequency

By LUDWIG VON KOOPA - They're a lot more suspicious than some Tea Party group.

Anita Sarkeesian is quite the character. Here we are posing together:

Ludwig Von Koopa Anita Sarkeesian
I look great. She doesn't.

She's the one behind Feminist Frequency and the "Tropes vs. Women" series. That's the Kickstarter-funded series of videos where she raised a giant amount of money to trash videogame narratives and the videogame industry's treatment of women. I wonder what she'd think about Trayvon Tyson's Punch-Out!!, which has... four women in it? One is a non-attractive guardian to the password screen, the next two are damsels rescued in a cutscene you're not really involved with (to be fair, two men are rescued at the same time. ...By a man. ...A Zimmerman), and the last is a poorly-treated villain. Anyway, if you haven't had enough of her, you can look at her tumblr or something. That's where all the socialist progressives hang out. (And KoopaTV, but our Tumblr is a disaster.)

The point is, is that the IRS now recognizes Feminist Frequency as a tax-exempt 501(c)3 non-profit charity. She actually got approved. Yet, we wonder where all the money she got from her Kickstarter went. It obviously did not all go to her video production. And according to some people, it was gotten through... FRAUD.

Tonight: UnFair: Exposing the IRS

By LUDWIG VON KOOPA - Head to the nearest movie theatre! 7 PM local time!

This is an article that is time-dependent, so read this now. Tonight, this October 14, perhaps at a movie theatre near you in America, the one-night-only premiere of "UnFair: Exposing the IRS" will occur! For more information, look at the following trailer:

Buy tickets here (if they're still available) at one of 674 theatres across America. (It's NR for Not Rated.) You will be able to watch the sub-90 minute movie AND participate in a panel right after with your fellow American citizens. Here's more information from the site.
"Written and produced by nationally syndicated Craig Bergman, UnFair: Exposing the IRS takes audiences on a tour across the country to explore the alleged cover-ups and abuses of power at the Internal Revenue Service and features interviews with politicians, community organizers, and the victims at the heart of the IRS' debate."
Why does KoopaTV care about the IRS (the Internal Revenue Service — the folks who intimidate and shake down Americans to take their money) and replacing the tax code? Besides being worried about the targeting of conservative groups, for a while, and writing multiple articles (videogame-related and otherwise) about the nefariousness of the tax code on people's economic activity (along with the very deepest of personal activity), we want the barbed tentacles of government out of the lives of people in general.

(It's also because KoopaTV sees the United States as an imperialist threat to the safety of Koopa Kingdom.)

But even if you don't take that view, there are much more efficient ways that do not harm the United States economy or put its people at the mercy of an unaccountable bureaucracy with unchecked (something that's fundamentally un-American), vast power. One such way is the FAIRtax. If you're still sitting there wondering when KoopaTV will have its next funny videogame-related article, listen up, because this is important. This affects you. This affects your future. It affects your parents. ...And if you're not even in America, it STILL affects you. It's a global economy. If America isn't prosperous, not many other people around the world will be, either! If America isn't happy, you shouldn't be, either. The IRS is a monster and threatens us all.

If you understand that or want to understand more, watching something in audiovisual form is a great way to make it come to life. Maybe KoopaTV will do something with that concept in the future.

Update: The movie mentioned a promo code "LIVE" for some purpose. Let's keep that written down here.

Ludwig hopes that America sees the IRS abolished soon, because then Koopa Kingdom, and also America, will be a safer place in the long run. He plans to also watch the movie at the local Koopa Kingdom theatre, which is not listed on the UnFair website as an available theatre.

Why is the IRS auditing the Tea Party and not THIS organization?
The IRS is serious trouble, and the FAIRtax needs to be enacted to abolish it.

I Still Like Cartridges More

By LUDWIG VON KOOPA - To this day.

Some people have accused me over the years of being a hipster. I completely reject this label, and I'd be a pretty terrible hipster when my favourite companies and preferences are... actually pretty mainstream! You know, Nintendo. Do you think that's relegated to hipsterville? I don't!

That said, one thing I can't shake off is my idea that cartridges are better than disks or cards. You know, the ones we had for the Nintendo 64, SNES, and the Game Boy Advance, among other pre-GameCube products. Since that time, your game files were saved off the cartridge and onto... memory cards, external hard-drives, and internal flash memory.

This may be the storage medium for my favourite console, but it's also the beginning of the end.
Again, I've been thinking this since 2003 when I got my GameCube. And I'm reminded of it just recently.

Miiverse Super Smash Bros. data management SD card corrupted
“Um... I was... playing For Glory teams... and after Sudden Death, it said my SD Card was removed and to go to Home.
Data Management says it's CORRUPTED?! Help?!”

Beware Barack O'Bowser

By LUDWIG VON KOOPA - Obama endorses KING DAD?!?

You Earthlings confuse me. The alleged leader of your kind, President Barack Hussein Obama, is a complete loser. He also is a complete liar and fraud, as KoopaTV discovered when he sent a reply to our letter to him. We've seen him invite the genocidal public enemies of Koopa Kingdom to the White House and Washington D.C for the purpose of plotting evil. (Alternatively, it was to catch Pokémon.)

But now... just... what is he doing?

President Barack Hussein Obama Endorses King Bowser Koopa
Just "Bowser"? Not, you know, King Bowser?

Endorses King Dad? For what? Why? What's going on?

I think I got an idea, and it's not anythin' good. We all have to be very careful about this. You ready? Read on.

Smash Wii U This November! (Those Leaks Were... Right?)

By LUDWIG VON KOOPA - I wish they weren't.

I haven't officially said this anywhere, so let me clear up my policy on leaks so the public knows:

I don't write about them. I pretend they don't exist. With any luck, I won't have to pretend. I won't know they exist. ...Of course, I'm in a constant AIM Blast with someone (KoopaTV editor Rawk) who goes out of his way to find all the latest leaks, rumours, and fantasy. And then take them as fact. My policy is my policy. It's not KoopaTV policy!

Still, every anonymous GameStop manager (a step up from Nintendo uncle) has been claiming for months now that Super Smash Bros. For Wii U would come out this November 21 2014, a much more specific date than "Holiday 2014" or "Winter 2014". And, uh, looks like that has finally been confirmed. Even though Rawk claimed that Super Smash Bros. 4 on Wii U would be delayed to 2015. And he believed that with absolute certainty.

Mark Block's Birthday Block Party

By LUDWIG VON KOOPA - Let's pretend we're invited!

For those who don't know much, Mark Block was Herman Cain's presidential campaign manager. We love him at KoopaTV. And it's his birthday today, October 8! He's 60. What a guy. Happy birthday, Mark Block!

So, KoopaTV and Mark Block. We have a long history with him. Remember one of our famous Shigeru Miyamoto bashing articles? That was his first mention, but he's been in our minds long before that, rising to become one of our favourite people.

This was from over a year ago.

Well, Mark Block finally made his big debut after we talked about it in July 2013.

Smashing in 3D - Impressions of Super Smash Brothers for Nintendo 3DS

By HEALTH - Waka Waka, Smashing Newcomers. This has roster spoilers!

There has been much debate, worry, and excitement over the latest installment of the hit series, Super Smash Brothers. Debate, as the series continues to spark animosity between the casual and pro players of the games. Worry, over the transition to handhelds; does it control well? Is it hard to see? Does this mean Sakurai can track me wherever I go? And excitement, as it is certainly a new beginning for the franchise, one which we have all been waiting for.

As someone who owns the Japanese version of the game, and have been playing it for the past couple of weeks that it's been out, I hope to allow you a little bit of insight into the game, and to hopefully help you out a little bit in cementing your decision to buy it.

Amazing Fun Last Weekend

By LUDWIG VON KOOPA - Mostly Sunday. Sunday the fun day!

This blog is called KoopaTV.

We reserve the right to just give you videos instead of written commentary. So, take that! It's me unboxing for the very first time... Super Smash Bros. For 3DS! Like I said I would.

Oh fine, you want bold commentary with an attitude? ...We got some of that too.

George Zimmerman's Civil Rights Charge Is Off... So Enjoy Smash 4!

By LUDWIG VON KOOPA - This article is a direct result of what happens when KoopaTV adheres to its "one article per day" mantra.

Fantastic news and day all around. As you all very well know, Super Smash Bros. For 3DS comes out today.

Buy it.

I don't really need to tell you that though. After all, almost a half of KoopaTV's articles up to this point have been about Smash 4 or related to it. This is it. This is what we've been hyping up for over a year now! IT'S HERE.

...Well, technically we've been hyping up the Wii U version, but, you know.

But this is also a special time for another reason! Attorney General Eric Holder is leaving the government payroll and resigning. But we knew that last week. But what we just found out?

The Justice Department is calling off its civil rights case against George Zimmerman! Or, uh, it's going to be called off. It's not officially confirmed yet. That civil rights investigation is George Zimmerman's biggest fear right now, according to an article from GQ Magazine. By the way, read that article. It's hilarious. Better than this article will be.

Play Nintendo! ...The site! *Updated October 11 2014*

By LUDWIG VON KOOPA - Though playing Nintendo in general is nice, too.

I feel like at one point or another I said that KoopaTV doesn't cover Nintendo's marketing campaigns for them. I think we've completely done the opposite since that time. So here's another Nintendo of America initiative: Play Nintendo! Launched yesterday.

For more information, let's head to the Press Release:
"Young gamers and their parents have a new home on the web with Play Nintendo.
Head to play.nintendo.com to learn about your favorite characters, try out some fun activities, challenge yourself with a quiz or two, and much more. We’ll add fresh content each week, so you’ll always find something new to try.
If you’re a parent, check the out the Play Nintendo companion site at play.nintendo.com/parents/ for tips on games, hardware, characters, and more."
I'm not a "young gamer" or a parent, but let's see if there is something for me in this new sub-domain.

Is that a font set we can get? Should I write my articles in that?

KoopaTV: The Second September Review

By LUDWIG VON KOOPA - Is this the future for KoopaTV's monthly retrospectives?

To our new KoopaTV readers from September (or whatever month): At the beginning of every month, there is a filler retrospective article that looks back at the last month. It goes over the events that happened, what might happen in the future, and the top five recommended articles from that month from the KoopaTV staff.

It's not meant to replace a whole month's worth of articles into one, but, you know, it's more of an archival thing so in the future you can look back and get a sense of what happened at this point in KoopaTV history. That said, if you are just joining us, it's definitely a good place to start to get a sense of one of the most intricate videogame blogs on the Internet! (And we might take steps to make that sense easier to get.)

By the way, I was right when I mentioned in last month's retrospection that August 2014 would be KoopaTV's viewership peak. September 2014 fell below August 2014. ...But it's double September 2013, so that's okay. It's not our fault. Our content is still great. It's just, September is not a summer month. So I don't need to tell you this, but you're a lot busier in September and its Fall brethren than you were in the Summer, aren't you? Maybe less time in your day to spend reading KoopaTV articles? (We guarantee that taking that 5 minutes a day for your daily KoopaTV experience will enrich that day, though. And that figure is only a third of what Dr. Kawashima wants!) Regardless, you're busy, you're preoccupied, so we get less views. Understandable. (Try not to let that happen, though.)

But if you do check out KoopaTV consistently — we publish every weekday — you might not only learn something new, but you might be amused too. With that said, here are five of our top recommended KoopaTV articles from September 2014, in chronological order:
  1. The "New" 3DS Is Old News
  2. Fatal Frame V Belongs on the Wii U
  3. Mario Kart: Product-Placement!!
  4. BREAKING: George Zimmerman REMOVED From Smash 4!
  5. Nintendo Network Services Agreement And You
That list was pretty hard to make. Remember, every article on KoopaTV is worth reading!

Oh, and to cheat: In September, we also announced the formation of our Affiliate Program and the creation of our Tumblr. If you have a website (like a blog) that you would wish to partner with KoopaTV, then please check that out. As for the Tumblr, I consider that thing dead-on-arrival.

Ludwig was pleased by the quality level of KoopaTV last month. Share KoopaTV to your friends or foes! Ludwig sure can't do that himself, especially after Facebook banned him! KoopaTV loves your comments as well.

The retrospective from last month.
The retrospective that is in the future of this one!
The retrospective from last year, interestingly posted at the END of September.
