KoopaTV's Live Reactions to Nintendo Treehouse Live: NWC Super Mario Maker levels!

By LUDWIG VON KOOPA - Sit-down and looking at the Super Mario Maker levels from the finale of the Nintendo World Championships.

Say what you will about the Nintendo Digital Event (and we have TWO different logs covering just that), but at least Nintendo's Treehouse is still trying to fill three E3 days worth of content.

So today they're going to interview the Treehouse dudes on their journey from localisers to level designers for the Nintendo World Championships. (View our reaction to that event — and their surprising levels, here.) The tool? Super Mario Maker.

"You're watching Super Mario Maker!" No we're not. We're watching three dudes talk.

Nintendork 13 13 7:49 pm
It's about the final levels of Mari0 Maker from Nintendo World Championships
"I need you guys to be full-time level designers now."

 RawkHawk2010 7:50 pm
btw all I saw in Paper Jam was Sticker Star influence.

 Nintendork 13 13 7:50 pm

 Nintendork 13 13 7:50 pm
    "What was your design approach?"

 RawkHawk2010 7:50 pm
And I expect there to be many Slam Jam remixes of its music.

 Nintendork 13 13 7:50 pm
    *doesn't answer*

 RawkHawk2010 7:50 pm
    Because Paper...Jam.

 Nintendork 13 13 7:51 pm

 RawkHawk2010 7:51 pm
    oh god
    Mario Maker?!

 Nintendork 13 13 7:51 pm
"It only looks familiar until this point."

 RawkHawk2010 7:51 pm
    We can't watch this!

 Nintendork 13 13 7:51 pm
I'm going to Best Buy tomorrow.
    I don't know what levels they'll have.
You can switch the background/bgm on the fly.
"The real goal was trolling the players."
"There's also that vine at the beginning which serves no purpose other than to waste the player's time."

 Nintendork 13 13 7:53 pm
Knows players are conditioned to hit every ?-mark block. 7:53 pm
    THAT'S Sticker Star influence.

 Nintendork 13 13 7:53 pm
    (Someone didn't play Lost Levels)
(...I've gone out of my way to never play Lost Levels.)
    Pre-loaded bob-ombs sound cool.
Treehouse folks want to be e-mailed a name for the pre-loaded bob-omb Hammer Bro Blooper tower.
The dreaded conveyor belt torch section.

 Nintendork 13 13 7:55 pm
Why couldn't Stage Builder be even close to as extensive as Super Mari0 Maker?
    Treehouse has trouble finding testers.
Once someone has played the level once they're "tainted"

 Nintendork 13 13 7:57 pm
    Shaking the mushroom platform
    changes its colour.
    Lots of aesthetic little details.

 RawkHawk2010 7:57 pm
That sounds like it could be easy to do on accident.

 Nintendork 13 13 7:57 pm
(You can't do that in, say, Stage Builder)
    Only if you're a spaz
    like tattoo-hands guy from EA.
    The Unraveled dude.

 RawkHawk2010 7:58 pm
    Oh yeah
    About SMTxFE

 Nintendork 13 13 7:58 pm
Coin bullet bill launches are "moment of terror"

 RawkHawk2010 7:58 pm
I remember when people were like, "It'll look more like SMT and FE when we see it again!"

 Nintendork 13 13 7:59 pm
"You can die, or it can be really technical."
"Watching people pull off really technical things, but not die."
Apparently people are frustrated more when they fail but don't die.
    Cosmo had super-trouble, lol
This game has different physics feel. 8:01 pm
Yeah. Hate to say it but that final head-to-haed was a bit of an anti-climax.

 Nintendork 13 13 8:01 pm
(I think he means NSMB vs. SMB, not Mari0 Maker vs. NSMB) 8:01 pm
lol, Mario Maker retconning the old games out of existence.

 Nintendork 13 13 8:02 pm
    Treehouse dudes are sadists.
"It makes you think of level design in a real way."
    I mean
I kind of want experience with level designers.
Especially if you guys want KoopaTV to produce a platformer. >_>
I don't have platforming level design experience!
You have to drop the spiky helmets onto people's heads.
Or else they could avoid them.

Mario decided that Goomba carcasses weren't enough for him.

 Nintendork 13 13 8:03 pm
    Because it's a new thing.
    Download levels online

 RawkHawk2010 8:04 pm
    Wait for DKC Maker.

 Nintendork 13 13 8:04 pm
    and examine its level design.
    John Numbers had amazing instincts.

 RawkHawk2010 8:06 pm
    Was that his actual name?

 Nintendork 13 13 8:06 pm
Did not expect John Numbers to just blaze past section.
    I think so
    They're loving player wall-jumping creativity
    Miyamoto is appearing?!
    And Tezuka.
(Treehouse people didn't know.) 8:08 pm
That took a while for them to come out.

 Nintendork 13 13 8:08 pm
"Oh, also Bill [Trinen], but, you know, it's just Bill."

Nintendo Treehouse Live Tezuka Shigeru Miyamoto Bill Trinen Super Mario Maker 30th anniversary
"It's just Bill? You're gonna die tonight motherfucker." - Bill Trinen. 8:08 pm
I was half-expecting the Muppets to reappear.

 RawkHawk2010 8:08 pm
    Oh yeah
That reminds me of a great tweet I saw.
"For a minute, I thought you were talking about a mixed drink and/or a mario-series enemy"

 Nintendork 13 13 8:10 pm
Treehouse are apparently better level designers than Nintendo EAD, according to EAD's testers.

 Nintendork 13 13 8:10 pm
    Tezuka announces... 8:10 pm
    "You're hired!"

 Nintendork 13 13 8:10 pm
Miyamoto and Tezuka decided to include the four courses Treehouse made for NWC
    Treehouse dudes are honoured.
See? Random ROM hack level design CAN get you into big places.
Build your level design portfolio, kids.
    Just noticed
    Miyamoto changed shirts.

 Nintendork 13 13 8:12 pm
From Star Fox to 30th anniversary SMB.
"We're gonna wrap it up here."
    "see you tomorrow"
wtf creepy Reggie thank you 8:14 pm
    Is that Robot Chicken Reggie?

 Nintendork 13 13 8:14 pm
    I think so.
    It's not a Muppet. 8:14 pm
Thought it was for a second...

Claymation Reggie Fils-Aime clay thank you Nintendo Treehouse Live
Tune in tomorrow.

Tomorrow, KoopaTV will give you more coverage of Nintendo Treehouse Live, and Ludwig will take a trip to Best Buy to play Super Mario Maker! There he will see if any crazy Nintendo fans have a positive opinion of Nintendo's E3.
