KoopaTV's June 2019 Review Newsletter

By LUDWIG VON KOOPA - Big seismic tonal shifts.

Let's look, overall, at what happened during June 2019 here on KoopaTV. The first half of the month was us planning this big field trip as a staff to Los Angeles, California, during E3 2019. By the end of the month, we totally shifted focus and now we're covering presidential politics. (...Well, not a total shift of focus... you won't get more of that until the end of July. I think.)

Anyway, observe how that plays out over June 2019 with the top recommended experiences:

The Top 5 Recommended KoopaTV Experiences of June 2019

Behold the chronologically-ordered recommended KoopaTV experiences from the month—though everything on the site is worth reading.
  1. Government Regulation of Pay-to-Win and Loot Boxes: Good Idea Or No? — Ludwig reads through and breaks down Senator Josh Hawley's lootbox bill section-by-section, and analyses if it's a good idea or not for the industry... and America.
  2. Your Majesty and My Majesty: Unicorns vs. Narwhals Splatfest! — Ludwig ranks the majestic qualities of these two mythical (to him) creatures, the unicorn and the narwhal.
  3. Phoenix Wright vs. E3 2019: Drugs, Detainment, and Discounts —What exactly was Ludwig (and the other staffers) doing during E3 2019 if not covering every moment? Read the epic tale of Ludwig's encounter with Phoenix Wright and the gaming companies at E3 2019.
  4. You're Invited to the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Online Open June 2019 Tournament! — During E3 Weeks 2019, Nintendo announced a new Super Smash Bros. Ultimate online tournament hosted by Battlefy. Ludwig writes about what participants could expect at this tournament.
  5. Gaming Disorder Official in ICD-11. Good! — Contrary to many gamers who don't think things through, and the Entertainment Software Association who knows what they're doing, Ludwig is supportive of gaming addiction being officially recognised.
I suppose I should disclaim that my choice of that tournament article was influenced by Battlefy themselves endorsing it and sending me gifts, which you can see yourself here. ...The actual contents of the article was completely my opinion and uncoordinated with them, though.

Right: Ludwig's Jigglypuff likes this black Battlefy bag. You pull the sides of it and it closes. He doesn't know the actual name for it.

Best Three Comments and One Worst Comment of June 2019

You've read what I had to say about KoopaTV-directed content in June 2019. Now I'll read what you had to say about that KoopaTV content... or whatever else you happened to have on your mind in the KoopaTV comments section last month.

First, the best three comments (in my opinion... you probably think differently, especially if you commented and aren't a neutral observer):

  1. “I heard Rotom was even more annoying in the Ultra games.

1:22 and 1:26 look like normal paths like every Pokemon game has always had to me. I might be confused over what you meant with your FFIX comparison.

The last couple of generations felt much more linear than previous ones to me, like I was at Point A and had to go to Point B with only a tiny amount of exploration possible along the way. Final Fantasy IX is what I consider to be a semi-linear game, one where you have a clear Point B you're heading to, but have other options along the way that you can check out first.” — Samantha Lienhard
  2. “Finally a brief article that gets the main point across.” — ShinyGirafarig
  3. “I will be the one to say that the ending is a reference to a prayer in Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur.

Honestly, I am a very casual player for Pokemon. I usually just use what is available ingame for my ingame teams then move on to a new game. My Shiny Girafarig and most other Pokemon I carefully raised for were transferred up to gen 6, never brought them to gen 7. I probably would get gen 8 for a casual run. I am even interested in using gen 8 as a way to interact with members of my religious women group I am in, who actually have a Switch. Most of that group is mostly mainstream fandoms like Game of Thrones or Harry Potter or at most Pokemon Go so it is nice to find actual Nintendo players in that group and don't want to miss out with the socialization just for a few missing Pokemon. However I do feel the movement to bring all the Pokemon back is worthy enough for Gamefreak to not get used to cutting corners for easy bucks. Should make a worthwhile product for the money of the majority of the fandom.” — ShinyGirafarig
I've played more of Final Fantasy IX since that discussion, specifically being able to freely ride the airship around the world and entering Chocobo's Forest and getting to do that whole side-quest. The point I was making in the article is still unchanged (the overworld connecting towns and areas of interest still has different control and gameplay mechanics than the areas of interest themselves, which is how it'll be in Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield) though now I can appreciate the comment discussion I had with Samantha more. ...And if I ever finish Final Fantasy IX (I might be doing this Chocobo thing forever and never do this four shrine main story quest) I'll write about my thoughts on that.

Meanwhile, Ms. Girafarig provided some quips and unique insight throughout the month. Unlike this guy, with the worst comment of the month made within the first few hours of it:

  1. “can someone tell me a code” — Unknown
The very beginning of the article that Unknown is commenting on is all about the existence of the KoopaTV Loyalty Rewards Program and how I give away codes to people through that (as I'm going to do in a couple more sections in this newsletter). The article also publicly displays... a used code, as prominent to its focus as being about the small font size of the eShop cards.

Let's say that I'm willing to completely abandon my standard site procedure of the KoopaTV Loyalty Rewards Program and just give away an eShop card code to some random dude asking for it in the comments section. Suppose that I just want to screw everyone competing in the KoopaTV Loyalty Rewards Program forever. The dude (though they could be female, I guess) doesn't even say “please”, but hey, we're KoopaTV, and we're not that big into having polite manners, so that's not disqualifying.

He leaves absolutely no contact information. How do I get him the code? You can see I replied to his comment. He doesn't respond, ever. He never sends me an e-mail or anything. I only know him through this public comments section. What, am I supposed to just publicly show a code there? Does he realise that other people read the KoopaTV comments section? What if I commented the code and someone else took it?

This Unknown fellow really did not think their plan through. It was doomed to failure.

Corrections Corner; June 2019

We actually got two corrections this month, both from Nandin Lopez.

First, he calls us out for writing Eastern Standard Time on the E3 Weeks 2019 Schedule while it is, in fact, Daylight Time. I personally see the original writing as a commentary on KoopaTV's steadfast opposition to Daylight Savings Time, but then we should just write Eastern Time and not differentiate between EST and EDT. Alright, you get a point for that.

Second, hearkening back to the “this font size is too small”-related discussion from the preceding section on the worst comment of the month, I inaccurately transcribed (in TWO places) Nintendo's Q2 2019–2020 Nintendo Switch release schedule graphic in my article about how Town isn't on that graphic.

KoopaTV Loyalty Rewards Program Round 26 Results!

This time, the KoopaTV Loyalty Rewards Program featured a $10 Amazon gift card code for first place, and a $10 Nintendo eShop gift card code for second place. Over June, we saw a big comeback and shift in the leaderboard versus last month's mid-round check-in. Take a look at the final results:
  1. ShinyGirafarig — 55 points
  2. Samantha Lienhard — 49 points
  3. Lheticus Videre — 48 points
  4. Kody B. — 21 points
  5. Nandin Lopez — 17 points
...Well... The best comments bonus points actually materially affected the outcome here. Congratulations to ShinyGirafarig and Samantha Lienhard for winning stuff. I'll send your prizes over in short order.

Announcing KoopaTV Loyalty Rewards Program Round 27!

Round 27 logically follows Round 26. This round lasts from July (now) to the end of August 2019. Check out the full details on the KoopaTV Loyalty Rewards Program page.

KoopaTV Quiz Part XX and KoopaTV Feedback Form Part XX Now Available!

Fun fact: ShinyGirafarig's victory in Round 26 was made possible by participating in these fun activities, while Samantha and Lheticus did not. Hm...

Well, they're fun whenever you take them. And now there's more. The 20th edition, in fact. Play with them here.

  1. (jaw drops) DANGIT! I probably could have still won if I'd actually written a guest article, I've had at least 2 ideas for them!

    1. I'm sneaky. I purposely delayed the feedback and quiz forms for people to underestimate my point count.

    2. Well I won't fall for it twice!

    3. It helps that the spreadsheet does not get updated instantly which keeps you guessing if people submitted material other than the usual comments. You then have to think for yourself if it is worht it to submit the guest posts or delay it for the next round to not have it wasted on the current round if people are barely earning points.

    4. ...Eh maybe I should make a conscious effort to update the spreadsheet more often.

    5. I'll have you know that there's a question in the KoopaTV Feedback Form Part XX that specifically asks about the spreadsheet and includes a multiple choice option about how I should update it more frequently.

So I predicted this entire conversation before it happened.

      Delete
    6. The spreadsheet not updating often is probably the equivalent of Wavedashing for Melee.

      Delete
    7. ...I....I really need an explanation for ShinyGirafarig's comparison.

    8. Apparently devs knew about wavedashing before game release but left it in anyway. Pro players took advantage of it. Ludwig knows he is not quick in updating the spreadsheet. I took advantage of it.

    9. I know the Super Smash Bros. Melee devolopers knew about wavedashing before the game's release (it's... fairly simple to do and obviously "what happens when you directionally air dodge into the ground?" is something the QA team would try out) but I don't think they knew the competitive implications on gameplay.

Meanwhile, I'm pretty aware of the implications of an artificial (from laziness) fog of war for a competition like this.

The counterplay to that is to not take things for granted.

  2. :O I didn't think I was anywhere close to winning.
