President Donald Trump's First Year Reflection

By LUDWIG VON KOOPA - It was mixed, as real life tends to be. But how mixed? Find out.

After an entire year of waiting, it is finally time to acknowledge that President Donald John Trump is 1/4 (or 1/8) through his presidency! Yes, he has completed an actual milestone. (It's a MEANINGFUL anniversary.)

Remember when everyone thought President Donald John Trump's first 100 days was the most important thing ever and it would determine everything that would follow for the other thousand-plus days of his presidency? Yeah, that was a stupid time period, and all of the obsession over that (both from the media, as well as the president himself) was silly. And I'm not just saying that looking back, but I thought it was always dumb. It's the ultimate enslavement to base-10 and stupid anniversaries.

It would be hard to guess how we would generally come around to the President if you take a look back at how we talked about him during the primary season. We (or I was, at least) were quite vicious to the guy, regularly insulting him and distancing ourselves from him. So, what do we think of him NOW?

We hyped up this reflection by saying we would put together a list of all of our President Donald John Trump coverage from his inauguration to now, and then we made a mini-contest out of it! Well, here is the list:

List of KoopaTV's President Donald John Trump Coverage in his First Year

We establish being Fair & Balanced from the outset, as well as optimism.

Immigration
Negative
Description:
This article, in terms of being about President Donald John Trump, covers his very first executive order at restricting immigration from Iran, Iraw, Syria, Somalia, Sudan, Libya, and Yemen. While we like the idea of restricting immigration flows, the actual application of the executive order wreaked of amateur hour and very unnecessary chaos, since no one knew what the hell was going on.

Description:
Thanks to the confusion and poor implementation of President Donald John Trump's executive order, other majority-Muslim countries, including Sierra Leone, got cut up in the immigration restrictions. Sierra Leone is important since that is the location of KoopaTV's Earth headquarters. Because of this, KoopaTV's article output went from five articles a week to three articles a week for an entire three months, which is... quite substantial and unfortunate.

General Trump
Negative
Description:
As it happens every year (and it'll happen quite soon from today), our regularly scheduled programming gets interrupted by the President of the United States taking over the airwaves to have a Joint Session of Congress (State of the Union). We're always passive-aggressive towards whomever is forcing that, which includes President Donald John Trump. Even worse, the dude was LATE. Plus, he reveled in all of the damn constant clapping the Republicans in Congress gave him, which was quite irritating. A real leader would tell them to shut the hell up and let him finish the speech a lot earlier. (Well, he DID finish ahead of schedule, which says something about the schedule when he also got the longest standing ovation in State of the Union history.)

Presidential Primary Horse Racing and The Wonderful 1237
03/08/2017
Topic and Positivity:
Health Care
Negative
Description:
This article is mostly about how the way the Republican presidential primaries of 2015–2016 affected the design of The Wonderful 1237, but it also talks about the real-world effects of how the way that primary was conducted is affecting policy now (or in March 2017). The example used is how President Donald John Trump's lack-of-specifics for his health care ideas during the primaries was coming back to haunt the Republican Party as they had a very underwhelming bill to repeal and replace ObamaCare. ...It didn't actually repeal and replace ObamaCare, and so it failed in the Senate. I blamed that on President Donald John Trump's lack of vision in the primaries.

Making America Great: Abolish Daylight Savings Time!

Topic and Positivity:
Daylight Savings Time
Positive
Description:
The positive assessment for this article was based on the optimism that President Donald John Trump would rally Congress to abolish Daylight Savings Time. The article is a letter that we sent to the White House asking for that abolishment, based on KoopaTV's long anti-DST stance. We expected a fast reply.

Topic and Positivity:

Description:
This is the Wonderful Wednesday article dedicated to being Donald Trump's strategy guide for The Wonderful 1237, featuring an analysis of candidate Donald Trump's statistics and his minigame, Mini-Golf. (PLUS, an embedded demo of the minigame!) The way the game The Wonderful 1237 portrays each candidate varies wildly, and the representation of Mr. Trump is relatively flattering compared to the other candidates. Nothing bad about having a two-hole golf course. We mention he goes golfing during his presidency on taxpayer dime, but he's also doing diplomacy as well.

Topic and Positivity:

Negative
Description:
Our Memorial Day article for 2017 was basically bemoaning that President Donald John Trump (and/or Jeff Sessions) were making no efforts to prosecute Hillary Clinton like he said he would during the campaign. Instead, the whole state of justice in the United States was spent on trying to investigate President Donald John Trump on collusion with Russia. This sad scenario continues to this day.

Coffee and Gaming

Topic and Positivity:
General Trump
Neutral
Description:
This was a stupid article based on a stupid tweet that President Donald John Trump made (“covfefe”), but as much as I want to say this is negative, the actual article doesn't try to give an opinion on President Donald John Trump. It doesn't really do much of anything besides give examples of coffee being in games. Dumb article, and completely Rawk's idea. Just because I don't like that I wrote the article doesn't mean it was negative towards the president, it just means that I'm negative towards my own article. (Still worth reading, like every KoopaTV article is.)

The Decapitated Mario Press Conference
06/07/2017
Topic and Positivity:
General Trump
Negative
Description:
If you haven't noticed, this entire article is taking D-list comedienne Kathy Griffin's press conference where she cries about how President Donald John Trump is mean to her for her making a photo shoot where she is holding his head (with no body), and replacing Kathy Griffin with King Bowser Koopa, and President Donald John Trump with Mario, and then swapping out the words as appropriate. It's an amazing article and picture, but when you're analogically paired up with MARIO, it's not saying anything good about you. Not that we like Kathy Griffin here or anything, but, again, Mario is the biggest enemy of KoopaTV. If he's on your level, it's negative.

Don't Keep All Your Eggs in a STEM Basket

Topic and Positivity:
Education
Negative
Description:
This article ended up being more Trump-related than I remember. Basically, President Donald John Trump (with Ivanka Trump) is instructing the Department of Education to spend hundreds of million every year in STEM education, instead of the original plan to cut grants by millions. I didn't take that positively, since I think you need to prioritise general education over STEM education, and the state of general education is pretty abysmal in the United States.

Amazingly, and completely unintentionally, we have a 50% positive to 50% negative coverage split. I thought it would be quite a bit more positive, but I guess this makes KoopaTV perfectly fair & balanced towards President Donald John Trump? In general, we have given negative coverage to President Donald John Trump when it comes to actual issues, with the exception of tax cuts. President Donald John Trump was able to avoid an overall negative split due to us being fully on-board with his war against the FAKE NEWS media, and we will probably continue that for the rest of his presidency.

President Trump Fair & Balanced Mini-Contest 2017–2018 Results

Here were the entries I got for the mini-contest:
  • Kody B., with an 82–18 split
  • Charssie god with an 85–15 split
  • Nandin Lopez, with a 76.9–23.1 split
It looks like the general trend for the readers was very high positive expectations, but still less lopsided than the mainstream media. So, the reader who will get a plus ten point boost for Round 18 of the KoopaTV Loyalty Rewards Program is... Nandin Lopez! Dude was off by over 50% though. I thought the most basic strategy someone would have would be to start their guess at 50–50.

No one submitted via e-mail, which I made an option because people submitting their guesses first might end up getting sandwiched by subsequent commenters if it was all public.

We take our contest design seriously, since we have a lot of iterative experience thanks to running the KoopaTV Loyalty Rewards Program for nearly three years now! And just imagine: in another three years, President Donald John Trump will have finished his first (and maybe only?) term as president.

Ludwig is curious where the heck KoopaTV's readers got their guesstimates from and how they were so off. Regardless, whether or not you participated in the mini-contest, what is YOUR assessment of President Donald John Trump's first year? Does it jive with KoopaTV's?

There's a sequel next year: the second year reflection! With different results.

  1. "Ludwig is curious where the heck KoopaTV's readers got their guesstimates from and how they were so off."

    Well, be curious no more!

Neutral - Out of all the neutral articles I found, I got 10 articles, including the "Coffee" article. Three of the ten articles weren't included in your list. Interestingly, five of these personally classified neutral articles are "Negative" against the one "Positive" (the one where it involved pink underwear). I actually wrote down that, in my personal notes, some of these articles are showing negative vibes, but I left them there.

Negative - There's a total of four articles, three of which were "Negative," and one which wasn't included in your list. Again, a majority of the negative articles were classified under "Neutral," excluding one.

Positive - There also happens to be a total of ten articles that I personally classified under this. There was one that involved Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon's Ultra Best of the wall, which had positive vibes, and the SOTU reaction log.

The main reason I actually increased my percentages (which seems counter-intuitive) is so I was able to control a much greater majority of the percentages below, and especially around the 76.9 ratio. As I was the lowest (but not that low), my strategy seem to have paid out in the long run.

If you would like me to email the list, tell me (or send an email).

    1. I was hoping for more game theory from the readers, where someone would put 50-50 simply because that has the greatest probability of being the "closest" to anything if it were a randomly-chosen percentage.

Just curious if you included the Net Neutrality article in your lists. Didn't consider that to be a commentary on Trump since even though it's as a result of him being president, he himself really didn't say a single thing about it throughout the whole thing. No one ever associated it as a Trump thing.

So yeah, go ahead and e-mail the list. I like knowing how my readers think.

    2. I sent the email. It's called "The List."

Actually, since there was very little competition, it was actually a more strategic move to get closer to the higher or lower score of the individual's ranges.

On a scale of 1 - 9, some people pick a 2 and an 8. There, it'd make sense to pick 5, as the person would be able to have a dominate grasp of 4, 5, and 6, a third of the numbers.

However, what if they chose a 6 and an 8? That leaves numbers like 5 and under all open to 6. There, the true strategic move is a 5, as the person controls over half the numbers on the scale.

So that's my game theory, control the lower numbers. Luckily, it was just us three, which may have not been what you were expecting, but it worked in our favor! What also helped is the not so accurate list, which I emailed. It was key to my KoopaTV contest success.

    3. I don't think it helped that in both examples of the game theory explanation, 5 was the best move.

    4. ...Yeah, your examples kind of undermined your point.

Your article list, and thank you for sending it over, showed a bit of a disconnect between what our staff considers "about Donald Trump" and what you thought was significant commentary about him. I guess we have a higher threshold, since we are well aware of our tangent tendency and we tried to filter those as not being "about Donald Trump."

I expected more entries due to the ease of submitting an entry. All you have to do is guess a number. You don't even have to actually do research into KoopaTV's articles to be able to do that. There's no downside to doing an entry.
I also thought people would take advantage of the e-mail submission option, since it is strategically disadvantageous to publicly announce your entry.

What I'd do if I got to play is comment a fake, extreme answer to mislead the other commenters, and then e-mail my real answer, and then the second, private one would override the first, public one.

  2. I did not include some articles in my calculation, so I ended up overestimating the percentages by quite a bit. This site is more partial than I thought it would be. While mainstream media is generally biased, at least I can always trust KoopaTV to be fair and balanced without any fake news.

P.S. I finally got a Switch yesterday and played some Splatoon 2. I'm now looking forward to participating in the next Splatfest.
