Monster Hunter Stories 2 New Info From March 2021 Digital Event

By LUDWIG VON KOOPA - A new digital event with a new trailer!

After CAPCOM basically hijacked the Nintendo Direct Mini: Partner Showcase | September 2020 from half a year ago to have a spontaneous Monster Hunter-themed Direct, we've heard a lot more about Monster Hunter Rise releasing this month. But they also announced Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin for Nintendo Switch (and Steam—though it's obvious the Nintendo Switch is the primary console that Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin and Monster Hunter Rise are developed for), and we haven't really heard anything new about it since.

That changed today with the Monster Hunter Digital Event of March 2021, which opened up with a new trailer on Monster Hunter Stories 2, tales of an updated website, and additional product information narrated by Monster Hunter producer Ryozo Tsujimoto. Among the most important updates is a worldwide release date of July 9, 2021—a lot more specific than just later in 2021. ...And sooner than I was thinking.

If you're like me and only care about Monster Hunter Stories 2 and not Monster Hunter Rise, the relevant stuff ends at 7:11, but all Ryozo Tsujimoto goes into are pre-orders, deluxe editions, amiibo, and bonus costumes. I can't say I care about getting amiibo about characters I haven't actually met yet, nor would I care about those characters getting alternate outfits, because, again, I don't really have any opinion on them yet, so I'm neutral on their default outfit versus other outfits. (The protagonist is “fully customisable” in appearance anyway.)

While Felyne friend Navirou returns from the first Monster Hunter Stories, all the other characters are new, so I don't have much to commentate besides wanting to know how the story and characters play out. Your Monstie is the Razewing Ratha (a Rathalos), which apparently is going to bring disaster to the world. ...I'm sure that'll be a major theme of the story, since the bringer of world destruction is your super-pet. (Ratha's stubby wings are probably the wings of ruin in the game's sub-title.) That girl named Ena, who you will be able to buy an amiibo of (again, why would you do that given what little information we have now?) gave you the egg. I guess she's your friend, and has been your friend for some time according to the website. (Since you visited her hometown, Rutoh Village, often, and she knew your legendary grandfather, Red.)

Monster Hunter Stories 2 Tsukino intel spotted
I, uh, thought this said something close to “Intel spotted.” but not “Intel spotted.”
(I made an edited version of this image portraying what I thought it said, if you're... interested.)

I guess when it comes down to it, we still don't know much. From what I can tell, bow weapons are new to Stories 2 versus Stories, but I have no idea how important that is! There's a breaking monster parts mechanic that I don't think was in the first Stories, but I don't really know what that means and if my thought is even true. (But I suspect people who actually play Monster Hunter games know exactly what that means.

...If it's not obvious, I'm maintaining interest in Monster Hunter Stories 2 because CAPCOM making turn-based RPGs is really uncommon, with the exception of the Breath of Fire series, which CAPCOM has abandoned a long time ago. Maybe I should play the first one on the Nintendo Switch Online SNES game player.

If you want to inform Ludwig on the many details he surely was unable to pick up due to his lack of interest and exposure to the greater Monster Hunter series (not counting his repeated failed attempts to become interested by their highly complex demos), please do so in the comments section.

CAPCOM brings back the Monster Hunter Digital Event for April 2021, with more on both games!

  1. I didn't enjoy Stories 1. In fact I returned it after only playing a few hours! I never return games, especially monster raising games.

Hopefully 2 is a little more enticing.

I'd really like to know why you disliked Stories 1!

  2. I was disappointed that they still didn't show much of the combat system, but scouring the website for details makes it sound like it'll at least be similar to the first game's system.

    1. It should conceptually be similar, but, yeah, details are still very missing.
