KoopaTV Live Reacts to Masahiro Sakurai Presenting Pyra/Mythra

By LUDWIG VON KOOPA - Available tonight!

Recall the announcement of Pyra and Mythra for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate in the Nintendo Direct two weeks ago. Xenoblade Chronicles fans consider that to be the most important news of that Direct! (Koopa Kingdom saw it as an opportunity to get revenge on Shulk.)

This morning, Super Smash Bros. series director Masahiro Sakurai took us to his house to talk about Pyra and Mythra, two Blades from Xenoblade Chronicles 2. They work like Zelda and Sheik from Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, a transformation/swap character with polarising stats.

I'm KoopaTV's local Super Smash Bros. expert, and HeavyLobster is KoopaTV's Xenoblade Chronicles 2 expert, so between us two, we got this all covered with smart, live analysis to Masahiro Sakurai's presentation, embedded directly below:

[8:56 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: https://www.twitch.tv/nintendo
[8:57 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: It's probably a bad thing that I can lazily do live reaction logs THREE WEEKS IN A ROW now.
[8:57 AM] HeavyLobster: I've been ready for this.
[8:57 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Or, you could view it as "diversity" in content.
[8:58 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: I'll be relying on you to supply any needed Xenoblade knowledge. Assuming Sakurai doesn't just spoil everything first.
[9:00 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: KONICHIWA
[9:00 AM] HeavyLobster: Solo recording
[9:00 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: In his house, with a Xenoblade poster.

Masahiro Sakurai house Pyra Mythra
Do you think he still has that poster in his house to this day?

[9:01 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Says the Xenoblade battle system is complicated to understand. ...Mmhmm.
[9:02 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Shouts-out that Monolith Soft worked on Breath of the Wild.
[9:02 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: "I recommend you play the game yourself!"
[9:02 AM] HeavyLobster: Sakurai starting shipping wars
[9:03 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: First up is Cloud Sea of Alrest stage. (As opposed to Miis.)
[9:03 AM] HeavyLobster: Argentum playing in the background
[9:04 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Probably bad when I see capitalised Cloud I think of... Cloud Strife.
[9:04 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: I assume the names of the Titans are actually correct, unlike the Nintendo Direct from years ago that mixed them up.
[9:06 AM] HeavyLobster: Yeah
[9:06 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Gramps is flying through the clouds and periodically looks at the background sights, and since you're fighting on top of Gramps, the stage parametres will change because he's shifting his neck.
[9:06 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Battlefield form removes Gramps entirely and replaces him with a flying platform.
[9:06 AM] HeavyLobster: Pls no bulli Rex!
[9:07 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Ice Climbers are already too complicated for the Switch (...and GameCube?) so Rex was excluded because they can't handle a duo.
[9:07 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: "Pyra is wearing tights" with an arrow.
[9:08 AM] HeavyLobster: Pneuma spoilers
[9:09 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Pneuma P2.
P3 inverted.
P4 cat-ears and Nia.
P5 dark colours.
P6 is tri-colour....?
P7 with popping colours?
P8 is Gold and Silver.
[9:09 AM] HeavyLobster: Roaming the Wastes BABY!!!
[9:09 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Pyra is sloooow.
[9:10 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: But her forward-smash is giant.

Pyra forward smash Mario fire Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
Shulk attacked Bowser.
By comparison, Pyra is roasting Mario.
Clearly, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is better.

[9:10 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: "you could try spamming it" - Sakurai
[9:10 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Mythra's Foresight is sort of like Bayonetta's Bat Within. ...ew.
[9:11 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Mythra and Pyra are semi-clones of one another.
[9:11 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: But like Captain Falcon/Ganondorf.
[9:11 AM] HeavyLobster: CounterAttack remix
[9:12 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: So yeah they're yet another disjointed sword fighter. >_>
[9:13 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Pyra is gonna be doing Ganondorf-esque smash attack spam for early KOs.
[9:14 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Pyra will be newbie bait while Mythra will be what competitive people actually use.
[9:14 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: (That's my commentary, not Sakurai's.)
[9:15 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: wtf leave Jigglypuff alone

Pyra Mythra grab Jigglypuff Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
Contrast Pyra and Mythra's Jigglypuff treatment with the Kirby treatment below.

[9:17 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Sakurai nervous about giving invincibility frames to Mythra's B move LIGHTNING BUSTER.
[9:19 AM] HeavyLobster: Torna Battle Theme
[9:20 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Mythra's stealing Sephiroth's side-b, while Pyra is stealing Ike's Aether, I guess.
[9:21 AM] HeavyLobster: Ray of Punishment is the latest in a long line of middle fingers to Ganondorf in this game.
[9:23 AM] HeavyLobster: Mythra is totally gonna be the stronger one.
[9:23 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Pyra pwns the plumbers; Mythra pwns the princesses.
[9:23 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Sakurai likes Pyra better.
[9:24 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: "As a fighter, of course."
[9:24 AM] HeavyLobster: Rex is a supportive boyfriend.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate official Kirby hats Pyra Mythra
Contrast Pyra and Mythra's Kirby treatment with the Jigglypuff treatment above.
(I won't pursue the thought stream of supportive boyfriends and Kirby...)

[9:25 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Sakurai says to get the Rex Mii Fighter costume if you wanna use Rex.
[9:26 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: (He obviously doesn't want to use Rex for himself, because he SD'd with Rex Mii in his gameplay demonstration.)
[9:26 AM] HeavyLobster: Apparently there's another medley playing.
[9:27 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Pyra runs like freaking Ganondorf level speed.
[9:29 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Uh...good job Sakurai I guess. "That CPU was level 8, by the way."
[9:29 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: 16 tracks total, with three new arrangements.

list of Xenoblade Chronicles 2 music in challenger pack 9 Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
I'll take it on HeavyLobster's word that this is all good listening.

[9:29 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Well, that's double my expectation!
[9:30 AM] HeavyLobster: 16 songs. Not a bad list.
[9:31 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Sakurai is censoring "Pneuma" "to avoid spoilers"
[9:31 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Masatsugu Saito drew original art for this "Pneuma" character to use as a spirit.
[9:31 AM] HeavyLobster: The character he added to Shulk's Final Smash is still a much bigger spoiler than Pneuma.
[9:31 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: He's also censored "Rex (Master Driver)"
[9:31 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Mii time.
[9:32 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Mii Fighters for Round #9...
[9:32 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: eek
[9:32 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: MONSTER HUNTER MIIS
[9:32 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: AHHHH
[9:32 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: NOW I'M SCARED
[9:32 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: GHOSTS 'N GOBLINS
[9:32 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Arthur is a Mii Swordfighter.
[9:32 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: THEY'RE DECONFIRMING CAPCOMMERS
[9:33 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Oh phew that's it.
[9:33 AM] HeavyLobster: Disappointed in not getting Xenoblade Mii skins. Elma got super shafted.
[9:33 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Challenger Pack 9 releases today.
[9:34 AM] HeavyLobster: Monolith Soft did the trailer.
[9:35 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Are other CAPCOM characters implicitly deconfirmed?
[9:36 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: SAKURAI HAS 3D FIGURES OF STILL UNRELEASED FIGHTERS IN HIS DESK IN THE OFFICE.

Masahiro Sakurai's 3D videogame character figure collection
Some Nintendo nincompoop fan is gonna break into the office and jam open every single drawer in there.

[9:36 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: THAT DECONFIRMS ANYONE WHO DOESN'T HAVE MERCHANDISE?
[9:36 AM] HeavyLobster: The music track list was pretty respectable.
[9:38 AM] HeavyLobster: A lack of any mention at all of Gears, Saga, or the Xeno- meta-series was somewhat disappointing, as was the lack of Xenoblade Mii costumes outside of Rex and Nia.
[9:38 AM] HeavyLobster: Still was a decent enough presentation.
[9:38 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: ...I'm worried for CAPCOM. :(
[9:38 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: But I guess we'll get patch notes tonight, too!
[9:39 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Maybe they'll be good for balance. :)
[9:39 AM] HeavyLobster: I was expecting another Capcom rep, but that might not happen.
[9:40 AM] HeavyLobster: Lol at Sakurai trying to balance this game. He dropped Ganondorf down a well and forgot him. Same with Little Mac.
[9:40 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: He clearly has made Pyra to replace Ganondorf...!
[9:41 AM] HeavyLobster: Doriyah was just about the only thing Ganondorf had going for him and Sakurai's now handing them out like candy.
[9:41 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: rip

Mr. Sakurai Presents Pyra/Mythra end screen
...Bye!

What did you think? Are you more excited for the balance patch notes, or for all of the Xenoblade Chronicles 2 content? Do you think Rex deserves better? Are you worried that there won't be a CAPCOM DLC character? Let KoopaTV know in the comments!

The preceding Sakurai presents reaction log was for SEPHIROTH.
And the next one is for Kazuya.

    1. ...Well, Rex will appear in their Final Smashes and Up-Taunt, so he'll see you, too!

And the victory screen, which it seems like they'll have a lot of versus you.

  3. I thought they couldn't make transforming characters anymore. That was the whole reason fighters like zero suit Samus are their own fighter now. Equally surprising is hearing they still have trouble with the ice climbers, you'd think 2 hardware upgrades from when they were introduced would help improve things, guess not.

    1. ...Two?

      GCN → Wii → Wii U → Switch

It's probably the undocked Switch's fault.

If Sakurai wants to arbitrarily change his design philosophies, then...yeah. >_>
      DLC privilege.
