There's a Mario Tennis Aces North American Open September 2020!

By LUDWIG VON KOOPA - Though I dunno if I can actually attend it. (But I'd like to.)

Recall the Mario Tennis Aces North American Open July 2020? Then remember that I played in it and it was really fun (and I did relatively well)?

Well, if you have Mario Tennis Aces already (and maybe if you and your friends enter the Splatoon 2 tournament this weekend you'll win that and get Mario Tennis Aces as a prize?) and want to do something fun with it, check out the just-announced, Nintendo-sponsored (and administered by eSports platform Battlefy) Mario Tennis Aces North American Online Open September 2020, taking place Saturday, September 19:

The ruleset is the exact same as before. You'll be randomly seeded in a single-elimination bracket playing best-of-three (first to two set wins) tiebreaker mode games (first to win seven rallies as long as you have two more rally wins than your opponent = winning the set) on one of four randomly-selected Marina Stadium courts, which have no hazards on them but have different properties affecting ball speed and bounciness. You may use any character. The prize for getting in the top 8 is 2500 Gold Points, or the equivalent of $25 in the Nintendo eShop.

I just have a bit of a timing conflict...

You see, September 19 is one of the most important holidays of the Jewish year... the START of the Jewish new year, Rosh Hashanah. (September 20 as well.) It's supposed to involve going to a temple/synagogue and engaging in, like, a five hour prayer service, featuring shofar (an instrument made from a ram's horn) blowing in elaborate ways throughout (except if it ever takes place on Saturday/Shabbat... which is why it's good Rosh Hashanah is two days long, so it'll always be on at least one non-Shabbat day) the service.

Normally it'd be inconceivable and impossible to attend a service AND attend a tournament simultaneously. However, thanks to the Chinese Communist Party Virus frightening many people (particularly elderly Jews), it's pretty hard to get over 10 dudes in a room for hours having to wear masks the whole time. It's uncomfortable and unsanitary.

What's a Jew to do? Well, many establishments are trying to innovate with things like remote services or pre-recorded things that you can stream right from the comfort of your own home. You don't need a mask... you can even stretch and walk around and no one will be the wiser. Theoretically, the biggest priority is hearing the shofar (which is best done in person, since according to some rabbis, electronic reproductions ain't gonna cut it).

Also theoretically, you could enter a Mario Tennis Aces tournament on one monitor and follow a religious service on another. ...I'm not advocating for that or saying it's a good idea on a spiritual or practical level, but it's possible with technology. Just don't expect to do well in either activity. I'm gonna say it's more important to start the new year on a good note than it is to possibly (but improbably) win 2500 Gold Points.

If you do want to participate in something on your own time, that isn't incompatible with religious obligations, AND you have a great chance of actually winning it, check out the KoopaTV Loyalty Rewards Program. The new round just started, and the prize is being in KoopaTV's Nintendo Switch Online Family Group for a whole year. ...You do need Nintendo Switch Online to play in things like the Mario Tennis Aces online tournaments, by the way.

Did you miss September 2020's tournament? Hopefully, you can join November 2020's with no conflicts!

    2. If that's true, then, writing a comment that's just “hey jew!” is kinda offensive and off-putting: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jew_%28word%29#Perception_of_offensiveness ; https://boards.straightdope.com/t/why-is-jew-not-a-slur/695782/22

It's better to say, "Hey, Ludwig!"
I would imagine you'd prefer, "Hey, Sam!" over "Hey, Muslim!"

  2. Well, I watched on the Jewish Broadcasting Service on cable the Rosh Hashanah morning service in the Central Synagogue (Reform), which was my first experience with a Reform service. And now it's pretty obvious to me why so many Jewish Americans are into social justice and changing things and being socially liberal, since that was what all of their sermon commentary was about.

Anyway, since that ended before this tournament began, I got to play it. I didn't expect I'd have that chance, so I didn't practice this game at all.

Round 1: I was matched against "Cody", who never Ready'd into the match, so I got a free ride into Round 2 as they got disqualified.
Round 2: I was matched against Pauline player Khee', and they pwned me. Game 1 I lost 2 to 7 with Bowser on Hard Court. I thought Bowser would be good because Pauline is supposed to take more knock back on charged hits, but I didn't have opportunities to do those charged hits since I was scrambling to return her constant flats. Whenever Pauline got full metre, she Special Shotted. I almost never got to full metre.
Game 2 was much better when I switched to Koopa Troopa (on Clay Court!), but I still lost, 4 to 7.

So that's the whole thing. Much worse than the July tournament.
