More SNES Games (Kirby Super Star, Star Fox 2) and NES Games to Nintendo Switch Online

By LUDWIG VON KOOPA - This $20 thing is worth it, man.

Remember when Nintendo announced that Nintendo Switch Online subscriptions would include Super Nintendo Entertainment System games, but they didn't make a big deal of the announcement because of the historical backlash they have on Nintendo Switch Online topics?

After saying they'll add new games to the NES and SNES emulator on a sporadic basis and not adding anything, they're coming with “December Game Updates” with this wonderful line-up of free (if you're already a subscriber) games:
  • Star Fox 2
  • Super Punch-Out!!
  • Kirby Super Star
  • Breath of Fire II
  • Crystalis
  • Journey to Silius
Check out the trailer here, and check out how the like:dislike ratio is actually very positive, as opposed to negative like almost every other video about Nintendo Switch Online:

I don't feel like going through all of these games and sharing my opinions on them. Rather, I would just like to point out some important overall things. (And this is commentary you won't find elsewhere.)

First of all, the headline on Nintendo's press release: “Nintendo Switch Online Continues to Expand in Value With More Classic Super NES and NES Games”. Keyword? Value. The defining word I identified for maintaining a subscription relationship with a customer? Maintaining value over the life of the subscription.

Remember when the SNES: SNES CE (or Super Nintendo Entertainment System: SNES Classic Edition) was announced and the big stand-out was Star Fox 2? This was late June 2017. The next day, I wrote this whole article about how Nintendo really does bring back old games you wouldn't expect to make them playable again. (The misconception that old games are permanently unplayable is a bad argument that pirates make.)

In the comments section to that, I was asked,
“So what are your thoughts about Star Fox 2 being kept hostage in the scalpers paradise?”
I replied,
“Hey, who says that...
https://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/6758-do-you-think-nintendo-will-be-to-satisfy-the-demand-for-the
...oh. Well, I guess everyone expects that to happen.
Here is what might end up happening: A few years from now, perhaps 2 to 4, Star Fox 2 will be re-released digitally on the Nintendo Switch or whatever. For now, yes, scalpers' paradise, but that's not different than the days where digital releases didn't exist.” [Emphasis added]
Only took two and a half years and it came true, which is within my stated time range. Bam. I'm right. And that's another reason, by the way, why the comments section is really important to KoopaTV. (And why you should comment and get yourself points in the KoopaTV Loyalty Rewards Program—multiple points—before the end of December so you can win high-value Nintendo/Amazon gift cards.)

I wonder if Star Fox 2 is actually any fun. Meanwhile, Kirby Super Star is one of the playable games now. I love Kirby Super Star Ultra, and I'm the biggest Captain Vul fan on the Internet. But I've never actually played Kirby Super Star. But with the Nintendo Switch, along with the fact that it'll bring online multiplayer, I can do that and fill my album with all of the great Captain Vul quotes (and with a friend)! But this is how Nintendo markets Kirby Super Star in their press release:

“That awful King Dedede is at it again – he’s stolen all the food in Dream Land. It’s up to Kirby to get it back and ultimately save Popstar from being taken over. There’s never a dull moment as Kirby dashes, flies and fights!”

Uh, Nintendo, did you forget how you already marketed Kirby Super Star? One of the first articles on KoopaTV (and thus plagued with Early Installment Weirdness) is called “Kirby Super Star's Marketing”, so believe me, I remember. It's all around the “eight-in-one” games. They're not full games by any means and previous Kirby games could state to have multiple games as well, but that's how it was marketed and the fans ate it up faster than Kirby inhaling the Meta Knights’ stash of food.

The food stash rightfully belongs to Captain Vul!

Unfortunately, that description doesn't mention multiple games or value. It talks like the Spring Breeze sub-game is the entire Kirby Super Star, thus equating it to Kirby's Dream Land. That's... definitely false advertising, in the rare underselling sense. It's a big change from how Nintendo has previously oversold Nintendo Switch Online as a whole. Now it's definitely worth the price.

Ludwig really liked Kirby Super Star Ultra, so he's sure that Kirby Super Star is a very satisfactory experience for everyone. He's the administrator for the KoopaTV Nintendo Switch Online Family Group, which recently had an open spot giveaway. Missed it? Wait for 2020, or join KoopaTV's staff and get entrance as a perk. But in the meantime, you can get even more valuable prizes in the KoopaTV Loyalty Rewards Program! (It's worth plugging twice in one article.) Let Ludwig know if you want to play some online multiplayer together.

Ludwig played Kirby Super Star multiplayer for the first time in April 2022!

  1. Kirby Super Star?! Hot diggity dog! I beat the Ultra version for DS a while back (as in, the True Arena) but it'll be great to play the authentic original again. I only ever managed to rent it as a kid! Anyone but Ludwig reading this, take this comment as authentication that KSS *is* indeed worth it.

    1. I'll note some differences between KSS and KSSU include the lack of modes like True Arena/Helper-to-Hero/Meta Knightmare Ultra/Revenge of the King, and those three touch screen minigames. (These make up most of the replay value in KSSU.)

KSS and KSSU have different treasures in Great Cave Offensive. Dialogue was rewritten, and Captain Vul's pictures were redesigned to be less exaggerated. The Jet enemy was also redesigned in-between versions.

    2. Oh, and the B button is Jump on the SNES instead of A like on DS.

      (Which feels wrong.)

    3. Doesn't feel wrong to someone whose first video game they ever played was Super Mario World. (As in, this guy)

    4. With the SNES emulator Nintendo Switch Online offers, you can make save states and rewind time, so that means you can cheat and get 1-frame Samurai Kirby results to beat Meta Knight.

    5. Since we're both trying to appeal to others, I'll let that slide, but I don't care for cheating personally.

    6. I don't think I ever beat Meta Knight on Samurai Kirby on maximum difficulty.

      UNTIL NOW.

    7. Then you still haven't. :P Then again, I haven't either...
