TAKE THAT! Phoenix Wright Revealed For Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Fighter Pass DLC!

By LUDWIG VON KOOPA - This is so exciting! [Must-see update at the bottom of the page that changes the nature of this article]

This past weekend was the PAX East gaming convention. Nintendo was there in big fashion, hosting the finals of the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate North America Open 2019. (See that link for more information, and the comments for how close I got to winning the qualifier rounds to attend the tournament.)

After promoting that through their communication channels (YouTube, e-mail, social media, press release), the tournament happened. The Southeast region won. And Nintendo ended the whole thing with a big announcement and trailer about the second character that will be appearing, after Joker, in the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Fighter Pass DLC:

Yes, the second Challenger Pack is CAPCOM's Phoenix Wright, the world-renowned (but based out of California) Ace Attorney! The audience erupted in applause. After all, people have been wanting Phoenix Wright since the Smash Bros. Fighter Ballot back in Super Smash Bros. 4. What can we learn from his trailer, which, like Joker's, doesn't have gameplay in it?

First of all, it's really cool that they made an original lyrical song just for the trailer. Not as catchy as Jump Up, Super Star! or anything, but still appreciable. Still hope that leaves PLENTY of space for all of the fantastic Ace Attorney series music in the obligatory Ace Attorney stage.

Phoenix Wright is out to prove he's the strongest in Super Smash Bros.!
Ace Attorney is Season 2 of the Fighters Pass!

Second, there's a lot of non-Wright characters in the trailer. There's also Miles Edgeworth, Franziska von Karma, Godot, Pearl Fey, Mia Fey, and Maya Fey. That's similar to Joker's trailer where all of his phantom thief friends are also in the trailer and acting like they'll be in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as well.

Given CAPCOM's friendliness to allowing Nintendo to use their stuff for Street Fighter and Mega Man, anticipate those other Ace Attorney characters to appear as new Spirits or alt costumes for Phoenix Wright. Perhaps Maya Fey will play a slightly bigger role as an Assist Trophy? She does have a notable spot in the trailer which might hint at something added to the Adventure Mode:

It looks like Maya Fey will be making an appearance versus the Master Hand army in the World of Light adventure mode.
Wait, no... those are left-handed gloves... It's the Crazy Hand army in The Dark Realm?!
Well, I guess it's not spoilers if Nintendo is showing it in a trailer.

The finger point in the trailer could easily be Phoenix Wright's forward-smash. It has a wind-up and everything.

This is the best possible news we could've gotten out of the PAX East event, so I'm ecstatic. You can bet I'm going to add Phoenix Wright to my list of mains, and I'll be going to his stage at every opportunity—hopefully it's tournament-legal in Stage Hazards Off!

I just hope he'll get buffed from his failed real-life fight against Furio Tigre, or else he's going to end up in Little Mac tier.

Please feel welcome to provide your thoughts on this awesome Phoenix Wright news in the comments section below! You'll of course be buying his DLC, won't you? Since you've already bought his games. You have bought his games, right? Well, in case you need some extra money, the KoopaTV Loyalty Rewards Program is always going on, and Round 25 is ending at the end of April, offering a nice $10 Nintendo eShop card code...

A mere week later is the release of Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy on the Switch!
KoopaTV has gone ahead and started writing Spirit Battle ideas for Ace Attorney characters. First is Maya Fey!
And then next is Franziska von Karma!
The third Spirit Battle is for the mysterious Godot.
Unfortunately, three weeks later, Phoenix Wright presented false evidence in court, and public opinion has deemed him corrupt. Nintendo has dropped him from Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
KoopaTV still believes Phoenix Wright should be in the game, so we'll fly out to Los Angeles and get him a meeting with CAPCOM.
The Southeast team winning the PAX East tournament got them a spot to play versus the world at a pre-E3 2019 event.
The Los Angeles trip happened, but Phoenix Wright was not in the meeting. ...And it wasn't really a meeting.

  2. I cannot believe that I missed this incredible piece of news yesterday. Considering how big the Super Smash Bros. community is, I'm surprised that I did not see this all of over social media. Regardless, I'm just so happy that this is actually happening. All this time I thought Phoenix appearing in Smash was nothing more than a pipe dream but here we are. What makes the announcement even better is that this also means Phoenix will get his own amiibo as well. I have not bought any amiibo in a while, but this figure is going to be one that I pre-order as soon it goes live.
