KoopaTV 2015 GOTY Awards!

By LUDWIG VON KOOPA - With other categories as well. A lot of other categories.

We got the whole Internet eagerly awaiting our ceremonial awards for 2015. What was the best game of 2015? What was the funniest KoopaTV article? Who is our favourite guest contributor?

You can and should check out and remind yourself about the nominations here.

Without further ado, let's start the ceremony. Oooh, let's put the page-break in a really enticing place. You definitely gotta click to see the rest of this article now.

Videogame-related Awards for 2015

Best PC Game

Was there any doubt? The best PC game of 2015 was easily KoopaTV's very own Capture the Confederate Flag. Nothing else even came close. Play it right here! And check out the advertisement video released just last week!

This just proves our point that people should wait until after 2015 ends for GOTY 2015 awards. Capture the Confederate Flag was released December 31, 2015. At night. And it has the best dialogue, graphics, gameplay, music, replay value, humour, and story of any PC game from 2015. And possibly ever, let's just stick to the 2015 awards. No other game came close.

Best 3DS Game

KoopaTV decided that the best 3DS game was The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D. So for the second year in a row, the best 3DS game was a revamped version of an already existing older game. That's probably not a good thing, and Ludwig doesn't understand it. Vortexica once (and might still) owned three copies of The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D, though, so he outvoted everyone. That's how democracy works.

Support monarchy!

Best Wii U Game

It's probably little surprise that KoopaTV voted Splatoon for best Wii U game! That's probably what happens when it makes up a disproportionately massive amount of article material since its release. The game is amazingly-crafted, and hey, the fanbase is pretty good when they're staying clean.

If you haven't bought Splatoon and you're a Wii U owner, you really are missing out. It makes you want to play again, and again, and just one more. Haven't felt that way about a game in a long time. It's dripping with fun.

Best New Character

KoopaTV's staff deliberated on this controversial category. Basically, most of the great games we saw in 2015 were full of already-existing characters, 'cause they came from sequels or spin-offs to established franchises. Now, there are some exceptions, but we didn't think they were the best.

So the closest we found ended up being Robert E. Lillipup from Capture the Confederate Flag! There's a curious question regarding him, though. We all can appreciate how awesome his name is, but as he evolves throughout the game (a symbol of both his growing strength and his maturity/coming-of-age into a Southern gentleman), does his name actually change to Robert E. Herdier, and then Robert E. Stoutland? How can you just sit there and let your last name change like that? You lose the name-cleverness, too.

Official artwork for Robert E. Lillipup. He's adorable.

It's a strange situation, even if the evolutions are signed off on by the guy you're named after. Unfortunately, the developers of the game wouldn't respond to our inquiries for comment in time for this article, so we might never know.

Best OST

Haven't heard Kirby and the Rainbow Curse's OST? You can listen to the whole thing in one video here:

It has not only music original to the game, but also a ton of awesome Kirby series remixes. Ludwig thought this is a really underlooked soundtrack, and the staff agreed.

Game of THAT Year

It's down to Capture the Confederate Flag, The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D, Splatoon, and Kirby and the Rainbow Curse.

It's... um... pretty obvious looking at those four games which one should be crowned Game of THAT Year 2015. So, congratulations to Splatoon for being the best that 2015 had to offer. You earned it, buddy.

And people tried to dismiss it right away by claiming the game suffers a dearth of content. Ha, fools.

KoopaTV-related awards for 2015

Best Social Media Platform

Our best social media platform was once again Twitter. It outperformed its competition in terms of quantity and quality of folks being driven to KoopaTV. That's just statistics.

Best KoopaTV Guest Article Contributor

KoopaTV's best contributor for 2015 that's outside our organisation is none other than Jareditton! We didn't give it to him just because we're affiliated with his channel, either. He had an amazing Let's Play of 2013's Best PC Game Trayvon Tyson's Punch-Out!!, and also a live reaction to the KoopaTV.org music video (“Ain't No Koopa High Enough”) that we didn't even ask for. He just did it. The former of which we're really thankful for, since it got censored to hell by our content host.

So, check out his channel here! Jareditton's stuff is hilarious and down-to-earth.

Most Humourous KoopaTV Article

There was a long list of candidates here. Makes sense, since one of KoopaTV's main objectives is to get you laughin'. The world's too scary and filled with anxiety as it is, especially since we cover subject material that's generally going downhill. At least, that's how we present it. So yeah, we're mixing up our pessimism truth-telling with levity!

With all that said, I'd like to award the Most Humourous KoopaTV Article of 2015 award to Vortexica with his fine work writing Konami: Boobs or Bust? While the article's title may be in the form of a question, its well-written qualities and humour aren't up for serious debate.

It earned the Double Entendre trope being listed on KoopaTV's TV Tropes page, and there are so many of 'em in that article. It's like an onion, or a The Vortex QUADRUPLE CORONARY BYPASS™. In terms of “it's seemingly endless in secrets” and not “this is totally disgusting”, though it may be disgusting to you too depending on what you think about those kinds of jokes to begin with. Ludwig isn't a fan of that sort of thing (though his own sex-sells article referenced in Vortexica's was also a legitimate competitor to win this category) but he can still appreciate the amazing effort.

Best KoopaTV Reaction Log

THAT year's best reaction log was... KoopaTV's Ubisoft E3 2015 Conference Live Reactions! We got the whole staff (at the time) there, and Ubisoft provided tons of weird stuff to live-react to, like Jason Derulo. There was also Kamek's crush Geneviève Forget, as we tried to figure out how to spell her last name. (It really is “Forget”, apparently. We missed that accent mark in her first name the whole time, too.) Ubisoft just consistently brings in an entertaining cast of characters, and our derived entertainment for you is also entertaining!

It was the only E3 2015 thing Kamek really showed up for (besides being assaulted in Nintendo's), because he only cares about Aisha Tyler. True story. Well, now he has Ms. Forget to fawn over!

Best KoopaTV Artistic Corner Contribution

The best Artistic Corner category article was...the KoopaTV.org The Music Video. Have you watched it yet? We'll actually embed it here. The song is called “Ain't No Koopa High Enough”.

My singing is widely considered beautiful, and hey, who wouldn't want to come to KoopaTV after watching this? The lyrics are great, too. And as we mentioned earlier, it was so good Jareditton randomly did a live-reaction to it.

We'll probably never do something as good as this, song-wise. Might be the thing I'm the most proud of in 2015, to be honest. More than the whole videogame we made, which was included in this category but obviously didn't win.

Best KoopaTV Article Series

We awarded the Continuing Splatfest Coverage the best KoopaTV series of 2015. It started in 2015, and it's so good it'll continue into 2016. All of Splatoon's Splatfests have let us cover a lot of different topics under the name of videogames. Here's an exhaustive list of them from 2015:
Autobots vs. Decepticons
Splatoon's Next Splatfest is More than Meets the Eye!
Quantity vs. Quality — Good vs. Evil
Art vs. Science
Pick Art: Art vs. Science Splatfest
Eating vs. Sleeping (Europe)

I think that's an amazing list full of amazing articles. Definitely quality series.

Best New KoopaTV Feature of 2015

There were two real game-changers in 2015, and pretty much the rest of the options were filler. You either got the KoopaTV Loyalty Rewards Program, which fundamentally changed the relationship between you, the reader, and us, the staff... Or you got the fact we changed our domain name and now have to keep repurchasing it every year or all of our urls featuring that domain name will die. And we got a nice music video out of it, which we lauded above. (There's also all the respect that comes with having a domain name, plus super-snazzy e-mail addresses.)

Yet in terms of what probably made the biggest difference, then, yeah, it'd be the The KoopaTV Loyalty Rewards Program, and that's what we're elevating as the winner of Best New KoopaTV Feature of 2015. We definitely want to continue it into 2016, and we already are! We've heard your positive feedback on it, and hey, we love positive feedback.

Best KoopaTV Article

We consider all of the articles on the site worth reading. And in another way, we sort of consider them like our kids. We nurtured 'em since it was whitespace on a page into a beautiful article that fends for itself in the world. We sure ain't paying for their college education, though. Screw that, they're going into trade school. ...The point is that this is a difficult decision.

Anyway, the best KoopaTV article 2015 is...

May Satoru Iwata Rise Directly to Heaven!

This article has pretty much everything you could want in a KoopaTV article. It had raw emotion, as Satoru Iwata had just died. It had multiple fantastic points. It even had some humour and sass to try to lighten the mood.

Only regret is that this picture kinda sucks.

Now, we would like to note something important. We didn't pick this article as the best article of 2015 out of pity or sadness for Iwata's passing, though we certainly have that in our hearts. We picked it on its merits. May those merits continue in 2016!

Wait, why didn't you type "staying fresh" instead? You missed an obvious, corny joke. How could you?

    3. Well you're probably on the right site.

That said, we did award Capcom's Ace Attorney series pretty generously in years past.

    1. Thank you~!

I'm sad the cows didn't win. When I wrote that in March, I said to myself BEFORE I wrote it, “This article is going to be DESIGNED to get into the KoopaTV 2015 GOTY Awards” because at the time it was one of the best articles on the site. It was sort of something I haven't done before.

      I didn't know at the time I'd end up writing even better stuff. ^.^;
