KoopaTV 2013 GOTY Awards!

By LUDWIG VON KOOPA - Game of THAT Year and other awards here!

To know what the nominations were, click here. We had our KoopaTV roundtable in our AIM Blast, and we decided the winners of all the categories. So... read more to find out what they are! These are all over 2013.

The winner of Best Communications Software is... Miiverse! Why Miiverse? While Swapnote was unmoderated and allowed for audio, Miiverse attracts a much wider audience that we don't have to be friends with. It's why some might prefer Twitter over Facebook. For more information about the importance of this social network, click here and here.

The winner of Best PC Game is none other than the spectacular Trayvon Tyson's Punch-Out!!. We've covered this game a LOT here at KoopaTV. In fact, we host it. We're actually not done with our coverage of the game, so stay tuned. We also fully support it with a series of strategy guides and an advertisement video as well. Jessie Go Jr. Remedial Algebra is of course also a really good game, but it's not as polished as our winner. It also has some curious design choices, such as being required to play the game twice to see the true ending. Whether or not that's just a way to artificially lengthen the game may be the topic of a future article. Regardless, while I love both Punch-Out!! and Donkey Kong Jr. Math, I like the former just a bit more. No other PC games came close, by the way.

And the winner of Best 3DS Game on KoopaTV is... Fire Emblem: Awakening! Although Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Dual Destinies was very well-received, this early-2013 game impressed the KoopaTV staff with its staggering amount of content. It's a great game. Great dialogue too (you're amazing, 8-4), and stuff to do outside the main story. You should try it. I know I will.

The winner of Best Wii U game is... The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD! We all think Wind Waker is the best Legend of Zelda game in the franchise, and an HD remake of it? Even better. It's beautiful. You might think the selfies you see on Miiverse are sickening, but they bring even more life into an already magnificent game. With that said, we still recommend The Wonderful 101 over Grand Theft Auto V.

The award of Best New Character goes to... Simon Blackquill of Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Dual Destinies! Congrats Mr. Blackquill, you're the best new character of 2013! So if you'd like to know why he won over fellow characters like Athena Cykes and Bobby Fulbright...

W-Well, okay. Moving on.
The award of Best OST of 2013 goes to... Fire Emblem: Awakening AND Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Dual Destinies! Yup, both of them. We might be less compromising later, but this was a good year for music.

So the Game of THAT Year nominees are Trayvon Tyson's Punch-Out!!, Fire Emblem: Awakening, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Dual Destinies, and The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD. As much as we have an agenda for the first one, we're not giving it GOTY 2013. Ultimately, we decided to give it to Fire Emblem: Awakening. While Wind Waker is amazing, it doesn't feel right to give GOTY to a remake. Awakening truly propels the Fire Emblem franchise in an outstanding mainstream A-list direction out of its niche shadows.

So who was the Best KoopaTV Guest Poster? KoopaTV decided to give it to RockSoap, who posted his five-part Smash 4 Character Roster Analysis for us. Even though he was already proven wrong on at least Toon Link, his dedication to write so much for us is much appreciated. If you'd like to be on the list for 2014's Best KoopaTV Guest Posters, find out the protocol for guest posting here.

KoopaTV values humour in its articles, so we have the Most Humourous KoopaTV Article award. And the winner is... RawkHawk2010's "Give Me Liberty, Or Give Me Swapnote" article. Read it. It's very amusing. I know from experience what that man did with Swapnote after all.

The winner of Best KoopaTV Reaction Log is "KoopaTV's Live Reactions to Ubisoft's E3 2013 Press Conference". Why? It was the best E3 log and the whole KoopaTV cast was there. It had amazing quotes, Aisha Tyler, pop-culture, and truly drawn out our personalities. These reaction logs have proven to be an important part of the KoopaTV experience: Unfiltered reactions from the authors that don't go through editing. You truly can see what type of (awful) people we are.

The victor of the Best KoopaTV Artistic Corner Contribution is "A Sonnet for Sakurai" by Ludwig. Ludwig writes a truly touching sonnet for Masahiro Sakurai here that fits forme. It also has real-life impact for Rawk, who dropped out of college so he wouldn't have to present the sonnet. Well, that, or he was violently ill at the time.

It was voted that the Best Koopa TV Article Series are the Madden Curse investigation series. Why this? It's just one example of what makes KoopaTV different than the others. We go into what really matters, the true mysteries that no one else is touching. It exemplifies our virtues of transparency and honesty. Also it ends up that EA's employees are incompetent, so it's funny as well. We're cited on Wikipedia, after all. So we're the #1 authoritative source on the issue. We're not done with our investigation, but Ludwig's resolution for 2014 is to be done with it.

Now for the Best KoopaTV Article award. I've always written that any KoopaTV article is always worth reading. But the best of the best of the best?

After significant deliberation, that award goes to Fighting Fascism In Our World and The Game Industry. Why? That article addresses a lot of the material that KoopaTV has covered from May to December all in one tight well-written package. It tells of the dangers of uniform-thinking and gives several examples of the horrible things a hivemind can bring and the benefits of diverse thought. KoopaTV has a set of virtues, and this and the other nominated articles (and the winners in the other categories) exemplifies many.

See you next year.
