Phoenix Wright's Small Tokyo Game Show 2020 Cameo

By LUDWIG VON KOOPA - ...Let CAPCOM know you want more than a cameo by filling out their survey!

In July 2020, I reacted to the news that Ace Attorney franchise director Takeshi Yamazaki left CAPCOM by stating that the seventh mainline Ace Attorney game (which has not formally been announced yet) must already have been in development for years, since Mr. Yamazaki has had no game credits since 2016's Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Spirit of Justice. Therefore, he likely left after his role is done, and that CAPCOM will prove this right by announcing this “Ace Attorney 7” at the Tokyo Game Show 2020, which just concluded over the weekend.

“Ace Attorney 7” did not show up. It was never on the schedule to begin with, and it didn't make any surprise unannounced appearance. The most that the Ace Attorney series got was appearing on this shirt a CAPCOM presenter was wearing:

You can see Phoenix Wright in the O, short for, “Oops, there's no Ace Attorney!”

It's still a more tasteful shirt than, uh, this shirt that also appeared on stream:

I could see myself wearing the first shirt. But I'm not wearing speedo-Ryu. Whose idea was this?

There was an unamusing lack of information overall during CAPCOM's Tokyo Game Show presence. Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin got no gameplay shown, and hardly any additional information from its initial announcement. Resident Evil VILLAGE had gameplay, but the camera was exclusively shown on the guy playing it, and not the screen, so all you got was his weird facial expressions and uncomfortable off-screen audio. If you characterised it as a waste of time, I'd find it difficult to disagree with you.

Unless you really, really care that Resident Evil is getting a Netflix series.

Fortunately, CAPCOM has provided a survey that you can fill out and let them know what you thought of their Tokyo Game Show presence. You can fill it out and, among other things, express how much you'd like an update on the Ace Attorney series in their open comments field, while also stating you're a big fan in their multiple choice section:

Hey, I'd gladly take a Ghost Trick game, too.
(I'm surprised that they'd put Ōkami on the list, actually.)

Besides CAPCOM, other companies also presented during the Tokyo Game Show, though I didn't pay much attention to any news from that. Koei Tecmo had a bit, and they showed off Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity. Nothing shocking in terms of what they showed, and the non-gameplay portions (aka the best part) were encapsulated in this trailer Nintendo uploaded:

One reason I don't like Zelda in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is her personality and attitude towards Link. Now you can see what happens in Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity when you give the girl the equivalent of a smartphone:

Either she's so focused on her Sheikah Slate she's not paying attention to the world around her...
...OR her vibration settings are way too high. Your choice of interpretation.
(By the way, that's Young Impa, not Impa's granddaughter, Paya.)

Did anything from any company's Tokyo Game Show presence excite or inform you? Let KoopaTV know in the comments section below! By the way, if you like filling out surveys and questionnaires like CAPCOM's, and if you'd like to see a direct impact as a result of filling them out as opposed to hoping for the best (unlike CAPCOM's), why not check out KoopaTV's feedback forms and quizzes? They're fun, and you can see a cause and effect between doing them and the resulting KoopaTV Loyalty Rewards Program point gain. Having the most points of anyone in that will get you a prize with a financial benefit.

You may remember that Ace Attorney was in the 2018 Tokyo Game Show, but it was to announce the Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy, which was seen as lame in 2018. Nowadays, we're begging for anything at all.
For example, the Tokyo Game Show 2015 had some real news about Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Spirit of Justice!
Waiting for Monster Hunter Stories 2 info? You had to wait for March 2021.
It makes sense why Ace Attorney wasn't at the Tokyo Game Show 2020... The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles was still being worked on for a 2021 release!

  1. "You can see Phoenix Wright in the O, short for, 'Oops, there's no Ace Attorney!'"

That's one of the better lines I've ever read on this site. It makes me want to make a variant of the "Oops! All Berries" cereal meme but with "Oops! No Ace Attorney!"

    1. I was originally gonna write, "Oh no, there's no Ace Attorney!" but then decided I didn't want to write "no" twice in the sentence. So I think that turned out well.
