The Rhythmic Nintendo Direct Mini: Partner Showcase | August 2020

By LUDWIG VON KOOPA - There's an irony here...

Last month, Nintendo had the Nintendo Direct Mini: Partner Showcase | July 2020. It was widely disliked, if YouTube's Like:Dislike ratio is to be believed. If you read through my thoughts, I didn't think it was worth disliking.

Today, Nintendo tried this mini partner Direct thing again, with the Nintendo Direct Mini: Partner Showcase | August 2020. Click here for their press release, and if you really want, watch the embedded video below. ...There's also a very iffy YouTube Like:Dislike ratio on this one, and unlike the July version, I'm one of the Dislikers:

I'll explain why over this quick summary of what happened:

The Rhythm Games

  1. KINGDOM HEARTS Melody of Memory
  2. FUSER
  3. Taiko no Tatsujin: Rhythmic Adventure Pack
  4. Just Dance 2021

First of all, while I generally suck at rhythm games, I don't think I hold any “rhythm games are BAD” bias. The irony mentioned in the article's heading is that the best part of last month's partner showcase were the DLC packs and upcoming physical edition for Cadence of Hyrule. (The Melody Pack is available today, by the way.) I also don't hold grudges against the Just Dance series, since I often find them the most enjoyable part of Ubisoft's E3 presentations.

Still, Nintendo knew exactly what they were doing putting all of these rhythm games together that collectively made up a large portion of the overall Direct. The part that ruined the whole thing, other than an immediate adverse reaction towards the Kingdom Hearts intro, was Just Dance 2021.

Whatever that song was, it was terrible. But perhaps even worse was how the segment ended:

Just Dance 2021 All the Good Girls go to Hell Billie Eilish Nintendo Direct Switch
“all the good girls go to hell” by Billie Eilish...

At last week's Democratic National Convention 2020 (known on KoopaTV as BideCon), there was a depressed, mediocre singer with vapid political views named Billie Eilish. I didn't mention her (?) in my convention write-up because they (that's a safe pronoun, right?) were one of several awful musicians that performed during it, and they didn't warrant special attention from me because they're some random kid and not a country-affecting policymaker or anything. And, again, they're a poor musician. Just...listen for yourself, if you dare. ...Just a warning that this is worse than the Nintendo Direct Mini: Partner Showcase | August 2020 itself:

Wasn't that a depressing message? So when I saw Billie Eilish's name in the screenshot above, I instantly associated the Direct-viewing experience with Billie Eilish's upsetting and very political BideCon appearance, and therefore, I actively disliked the entire Direct Mini.

Everything Else

  1. World of Tanks Blitz
  2. Big Rumble Boxing: Creed Champions
  3. COLLECTION OF SaGa FINAL FANTASY LEGEND
  4. Puyo Puyo Tetris 2
  5. Minecraft Dungeons: Creeping Winter DLC
  6. JUMP FORCE - Deluxe Edition
  7. Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions
  8. FINAL FANTASY CRYSTAL CHRONICLES Remastered Edition

As for the non-rhythm portions, none of these things I care about very much. That World of Tanks game has been around for a decade, and is a suspicious free-to-play experience.

The Nintendo Power magazine made FINAL FANTASY CRYSTAL CHRONICLES out to be a very underrated (due to hardware requirements for local multiplayer) but interesting experience many years ago back when it was on the GameCube, and it releases tomorrow. (It's far from a new announcement.) However, it has a weird $35 in DLC for a $30 game. That seems suspicious. (This is opposed to how I feel about the aforementioned Cadence of Hyrule DLC.) It looks mostly cosmetic, but then there's also a weapon pack that makes me wonder if there's a pay-to-win aspect. The remastered version will feature online play, as opposed to GBA-GCN-based local multiplayer.

Perhaps it'll be worth checking out, since I lack co-op online multiplayer Switch games besides, like, Salmon Run mode in Splatoon 2.

I acknowledge Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 is cute, though! Cute things matter.

Just remember: Billie Eilish is... far from cute.

Nintendo promises future Nintendo Direct Mini: Partner Showcases. Let's hope they don't star controversial political actors like this one did. What did YOU think of the August 2020 Partner Showcase? Let KoopaTV know in the comments section.

The Nintendo Direct Mini: Partner Showcase | September 2020 was SO MUCH BETTER! Check it out.

  1. I disagree on the Crystal Chronicles DLC. None of what's on offer seems required to effectively play the game. And I'm extremely curious what the experience will be like playing it with 4 players as originally intended. The inclusion of that game as well as Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 raised this Mini Direct above the previous one in my opinion.

    1. I'm going to take that as "I was a fan of the GameCube Crystal Chronicles but didn't have 4 people to play it with"?

    2. Plus the various handheld systems and connecting cables that were required back then. ONE time, I had a session where I played with ONE other person, that's all that I managed. I thought the concept was awesome even though I never made it very far solo, and I still think the concept is awesome.

    3. I agree with awesome concept; I just dunno if the execution worked out...!

    4. That's exactly what I'm hoping for--that the transition to online co-op will fix the execution.

    5. While I've written over and over that you can't trust critic reviews, most of the poor scores here are around that execution:

(Compare to GameCube one which has much better scores)
