June 30, 2020 Nintendo Quarterly Financial Update

Today, Nintendo released their financial results for the first quarter of their fiscal year (April 2020 to end of June 2020). While previous years may have an ugly name like “three months into the fiscal year ending March 2021”, for the first time ever, Nintendo is acting like a normal company and just calling it FY21 Q1. (Fiscal Year 2021 Quarter 1.) And the results were excellent. In fact, Nintendo's stock is the highest it's been in over a decade.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is now the second-most selling Nintendo Switch game of all time, at 22.40 million copies sold. (Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is at 26.74 million, while Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is at 19.99 million. Since these numbers are from June 30, I think by August 6, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is over 20 million.) Over 50% of all of the software sales during those three months were sold digitally, which is a record high. As for the physical console itself, 61.44 million Switch systems have been sold, total, which is 5.68 million units sold in the quarter. Still a lot of physical console movement. Over half of that was the traditional Switch, as opposed to the Lite.

Big Switch games for the second half of the calendar year include the just-released Paper Mario: The Origami King, the just-announced Pikmin 3 Deluxe for October 30 (I guess that should get a dedicated article later?), and the second half of the Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield DLC, The Crown Tundra. ...That...seems pretty weak, but there may still be surprises to come. (No promises. ...Where's No More Heroes 3 hanging out?)

Let's talk about those last three games on the ever-growing chart that I really should cull by now.

So you can interpret this correctly: Between October 18 2019 and December 31 2019, Ring Fit Adventure had sold 2.17 million copies. Between January 1 and March 31 2020, Ring Fit Adventure sold an additional .56 million copies, for a lifetime total of 2.73 million. Then between April 1 2020 and June 30 2020, Ring Fit Adventure's lifetime total reached 3.90 million, meaning it sold 1.17 million copies in that time period. 

Normally, games see a decrease in the rate they're sold the farther they are from release date, and you can see that's largely true across the above chart. Ring Fit Adventure bucked the trend because the supply constraints were (and in some instances, still are) real. 

Seven of the top ten most-page-viewed articles on KoopaTV from January 1 to June 30, for your information, are all Ring Fit Adventure articles/fitness logs. KoopaTV may have missed out on the Animal Crossing: New Horizons content opportunity (and I blame Witch Princess for that, since you may recall I said in an article footer she'd be publishing Animal Crossing content on KoopaTV but she hasn't done so, since she claims she wants her town to be in a perfect presentable condition first but that's apparently never gonna happen), but we at least caught the Ring Fit Adventure one. And it's a good thing, too, since the game is great.

As for Xenoblade Chronicles: Deluxe Edition, the sales were high enough that it's possible that 100% (minus one... since I didn't) of the people who read our Xenoblade Chronicles is a modern classic article went and bought it!

Lastly, Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics sold a mere 1.03 million copies. I consider that a disappointment, though I don't know Nintendo's expectations for it. Nintendo not marketing Clubhouse Games due to “respect” for fun-hating protests had a big impact on the sales of the game, I'm sure. Lots of people don't even know the game exists. But now Nintendo has moved on to promoting other things. And now it's time for me to move on to another article...


Ludwig should still be playing Ring Fit Adventure, and thinks you should, too. ...Don't take that as any statement on your current physical fitness, please. It's good fun. Ludwig is aware many Nintendo fans are concerned that the company's game pipeline is very weak for the rest of 2020, but the Koopaling isn't concerned that he'll be bored at all for the rest of 2020.
