As proof you shouldn't go to KoopaTV as your only source of information, we purposefully never talked about the announcement that Nintendo's Wi-Fi Connection would be shut down today, something we knew would happen for months. Why? Well, it didn't fit the narrative.

Now that it's finally over, we'd like to clear up any misconceptions you may have. The full list of games affected (apparently 408 in number) is here. Nintendo-published ones are here. Nintendo would like to stress the following:
"Only online features for games using the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection service are impacted. Other online functionality on Wii and Nintendo DS, such as access to the Wii Shop Channel, the Nintendo DSi Shop and video-on-demand services, are not affected at this time. Online play for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS games will be unaffected (aside from the Wii mode on Wii U and Nintendo DS games played on Nintendo 3DS family systems)."
If you want to be wary of that "are not affected at this time" and read it as "it's not affected YET", go ahead. As of now, Club Nintendo rewards still give out Wii codes you have to go to the Wii Shop Channel to access. You can be sure that when it eventually does close, Nintendo will make an announcement about it.
I've talked to a lot of gamers that are "casual" in their playing of games and Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection services, and they all knew this was coming. That means Nintendo did a good job getting the word out about this. (So what do you need us for?)
Unfortunately, around 10% of the gaming population appears to be angry at Nintendo over this. So let's make this clear. Nintendo outsourced NWFC to GameSpy, which is also the middleware for many other companies' online infrastructure. GameSpy's parent company, Glu, decided to shut down GameSpy's servers for everyone. Some companies handled this differently than others, and Nintendo's decision was not to migrate Wi-Fi Connection to their in-house Nintendo Network, but to just let it die. Other companies did that migration, did something else, or chose what Nintendo chose. Nintendo thought propping up these old games wasn't worth the expense, probably because the DS and Wii games have (or will have) sequels on the 3DS and Wii U. Except for Battalion Wars 2. Bummer.

So, again, for clarity: This is not like when Nintendo ended Swapnote. That was entirely their decision. This... is a bit out of their hands. Yes, they could've migrated it, but... at what cost to what benefit? The whole point is that Nintendo Network is distinct from NWFC (although I personally have trouble making people understand that when I explain it to them) and... yes, while the timing of Mario Kart 8 coming out a few days later is perfect, that's a coincidence.
Personally, I'm at peace with it. KoopaTV's staff played Brawl for three hours online Sunday night, and I went through every character on the roster in matches. Good times. It served us well for over six years. And Wi-Fi Connection? Served us well for nine. Rest in peace.

DeleteNintendo is a pioneer in backwards compatibility. They are the ONLY console manufacturer (see: http://koopatv.blogspot.com/2014/06/the-world-snub-eas-world-class-trolling.html ) promoting backwards-backwards compatibility with GameCube support on the Wii U.
They allow people to play their old games when they port them to the Virtual Console on 3DS, Wii, and Wii U. The Wii U has access to its own growing catalog of Virtual Console games AND the Wii's expansive selection using the backwards-compatible Wii mode on the Wii U.
(Of course, if you have the old console, you can play the old games...)
Just because Glu took away Nintendo Wifi Connection, along with the online services of many, many other gaming companies, does not mean you can no longer play games like Super Smash Bros. Brawl or Pokémon Diamond. They still have extensive non-wifi features for you to enjoy.
Not everyone can buy the latest things, but it's not like Nintendo should keep making Wii games. They're not Electronic Arts (see the article link earlier in this comment), and it's not like they should make Wii U games on... the... Wii.
If Nintendo was really making it impossible for people who do not own the Wii U to play, say, SNES games, they would do the following:
1. Go into everyone's house and confiscate their SNES
2. Disable the Wii Shop Channel
They haven't done either of those.

If there were competition in this market, that wouldnt't happen. I know tha we, consumers, need Nintendo's connections, but imagine the number of people that were damaged by this decision of Nintendo. Many would want to play with friends, play on-line - why? Because Nintendo offered this services, made you want, and when you enjoyed, he broke the service out. The reason is clearly to force the consumers to buy their new products. Tha's a manifestation of economic power (power to impose other ones to behavior in one or another way), but this is not forbidden by law. What is forbidden is the abuse of this economic power, and that occured, in this case. Here's my argument.

Yes, they chose not to buy servers for Wii and DS stuff. Yes, they did it because of capitalism. No, that's not a bad thing.
They don't want to keep supporting the Wii and DS, which they get no money supporting. They don't still sell Wii and DS. Wi-Fi Connection was always free for the consumer, so the sole purpose of its existence was to be a feature with Wii and DS. It would be a selling point for why you should get a Wii and/or DS.
However, if you're no longer selling Wii and DS, why would you keep the selling point up?
Perhaps to please your existing customers that are lagging behind by years to adopt the new technology?
I'm sure Nintendo THOUGHT about doing that. And I'm positive they calculated the immense costs of supporting a service they get no revenue from vs. the cost of angry consumers. In the end, the cost of angry laggard consumers was less than the cost of supporting that service.
So yes, it's capitalism, but it's fine. It means Nintendo can use that money for something else, like funding another Wii U or 3DS project or three.
Again, I'm at peace with Brawl's wi-fi ending. I'd rather have those additional projects than continue that. Smash 4 will be great, and people SHOULD get the 3DS and Wii U. They're great systems with great games.
I think it's a load of crap. We bought a product with certain features and now they don't work. There is still the icon WFC showing up on there but it is useless and it's not because it is broke! As long as there are still people using the service it should not of been discontinued. I think that is the problem with things today. We just accept getting less and that is BS! People pay for things all the time and get crappy service or none at all. I don't think most of us want to go out and replace a system that worked just fine with a new one that who knows when they will decide to pull the plug on it next. That is really nice that you are at peace with it, too bad you can't understand why most of us aren't. All we ever wanted was what came with the game, instead we got a big part of it ripped away. Thanks a lot to whomever thought that was a great idea.

I think they should consider how many units were sold and base their decision on that. They made a steller product with the Wii and I would venture to guess a very high percentage of those units are still very much in working order aside from the fact that they just removed a major selling feature. This is like Verizon offering cell phone service 24/7 and one day saying "ok now only the Iphone 5 has service 24/7, sorry to everyone else but you can buy the newer phone, nobody is stopping you. Nobody ever promised you the service would stay up forever. What a crappy way to run a business and to treat the millions of customers who bought into it.

When were we told this was going to happen? I don't recall being notified? I understand it wasn't Nintendo's decision which doesn't speak highly of Nintendo in the first place. It is their product and their name on every Wii console and game that plays in the product. Before it went offline we had discussed looking into the WiiU but if this is how they are going to run things, I think we'll pass. I'm tired as hell of playing this "pay again and again and upgrade" game It really is bad business and a bad reflection of a company that has made millions or billions on the backs of gamers that took Nintendo Wii to the top.

whats the point in all this? The wii was one of nintendos best-selling products, why put all of its buyers into misery for the sales of some crappy products such as the 2DS (which destroys the point of a DS: to fit in your pocket), and the Wiiu (which is overpriced and overvalued). Now then, the 3DS family is an amazing set of systems, and I would like to know why you believe the Wii U is overpriced and overvalued. I cherish my Wii U, and of course, you can play Kart on 3DS/2DS and/or Wii U with your cousin or anyone else who also has those games.
The point in all this is that companies drop unprofitable things. Glu was going out of the business of hosting network services for videogame companies. Videogame companies could choose whether or not to absorb that previously-outsourced function, or let it die. Doing the former for Nintendo is very costly... for a service provided free to the customers.

Well this is stupid i have given nintendo $2000 that has been spent on the wii and this is how they repay me i am not buying a wii u or 3ds. i find the 3ds the same as the nintendo ds only with cameras, memory (the worst part of the handheld device), and a store and all of these options are useless. I find the wii u just a terrible copy of the regular wii, and if nintendo ever discontinue another service that i enjoy i will email them telling them that they are stupid idiots who don't know what to do. Lugwig answer me this if you spent 1000's of dollars on a gaming console and they decide to pull the plug on a service that you have enjoyed for 8 years how would you feel? because right now i am feeling crappy, i have payed $3000!!!! in total for all the games and accessories, and don't even try to defend nintendo because they are fucks who have no respect to costumers.

Yes, Wii, DS, DS Lite, DSi and DSi XL are now useless. One of those is over 10 years old now, and the others are getting there (8 years and counting).
It's a very, very traditional thing in the videogame industry for consoles to have a lifespan of like, 6 years.
Wii U isn't overpriced in the sense that Nintendo initially lost money on selling that hardware, unlike, for example, the DS and Wii.
...The 2DS isn't complete shit! (You get what you pay for!) It's stereo with headphones, anyway.
And hey, it's still an upgrade from a DS Lite.
The people who keep claiming they're too poor to upgrade to a new system simultaneously claim that they would buy new games on the Wii and DS if Nintendo WFC was still around (despite no new games being made for those).
I just noticed. There are 4 DSs in my house. I recommended buying DSs to my friends back in 2010, they bought. My cousins have DSs. My friends and family too. This is bad. This might hit Nintendo's reputation hard. Angry customers bring companies down. If I had Nintendo stock I would sell it. I'll add them to my portfolio to consider betting against.. this looks like Blackberry in the smartphone industry.. whoa.. Nintendo lost it. They should put the servers back up to avoid the backlash. Since May 20, Nintendo's stock has... pretty much stayed the same. (May 20 to August 29 it has increased .36%) It decreased a ton of like July 28 for some reason I haven't followed but was generally going up before then!

I maintain that there are many single-player experiences AND local multiplayer experiences on the Wii that are absolutely fantastic without WFC.
Do not forget that Nintendo is the king of local multiplayer, a title they have always had and continue to have on the Wii U. (It helps the other console manufacturers have abandoned local multiplayer.)
They could have carried WFC onto Nintendo Network, but the problem there is that... that would require a major patch to the DS and Wii to be able to do things like generate NNIDs. The 3DS obtained a patch/update to allow that, but the DS has absolutely no way of receiving one of those. ...The Wii could, I guess.
What exactly was the other way of getting around being offline you say it's not as safe but it is an alternative cause i just bought white 2 to make some legit hacks cause im one of those people that really dont care for the story or the gameplay of pokemon but i like the battle portion of it. Or really any turn based strategy game at that, but this is really all i play on my 3ds, when i do play it, would it be worth it to try the method you spoke of?

I'm very mad/saddened by this... I actually feel this is, in fact, Nintendo's fault. They may have not done it directly, but they decided to let someone else have control over a functionality of their own products! Unless they couldn't afford to run it themselves, that's the dumbest thing ever. If Nintendo just ran their own Wifi connection services, (like everyone thinks they do... The least they could do is take their name off of it if it isn't theirs anymore. Not doing it is a good way to be blamed and lose customers,) we probably wouldn't be having this problem.
ReplyDeleteI agree with other people, though: not everyone has the money to waste on a game system that's over $100 and then buy games that are nearly $100 3 years after their release! I honestly wanted to do trades on Pokemon, (I don't know anyone who lives near me who I can trade with locally...) but Pokemon games, (Diamond/Pearl, even GBA games,) are usually $30+ at GameStop, and that's ridiculous. I just want a few Pokemon, but i can't even do that because Nintendo chooses not to fully support itself...
I think it would have been smarter if they just didn't offer what they can't handle. They're an old company that provides convenience, (for the most part,) for their customers! The only thing not to love is that they can't uphold all of their features... Maybe that's one of the downsides of being the best gaming company? (They really are. Gamecube on Wii? Not many other companies do things like that--hell, you can't even play xbox original games on the 360 anymore!)
What I want to know is...
