KoopaTV's Live Reactions to the Pokémon Presents February 2021

By LUDWIG VON KOOPA - They call it exciting news, but... Half of it was a montage!

I already have recommended to everyone not to get excited over however The Pokémon Company International is going to hype and promote the 25-year anniversary of the Pokémon series. They got some musicians and artwork and merchandise, but how about games?

Well, today TPCi provided a 20-minute Pokémon Presents, and KoopaTV (...actually, it's just me, because everyone else has a day job—I do too, actually...) live-reacted to it with no expectations other than assuming we'll be disappointed. Literally the last time this happened they talked about Pokémon UNITE.

[9:56 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iTZeVNwAmkk
[9:56 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: "Set your alarms now, Trainers. We’ve got some exciting news to share that you won’t want to miss!"
[9:59 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: ...Happening...shortly.
[10:00 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Which should be now.
[10:00 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Two-minute countdown on-screen. Hmph.
[10:02 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Oh, it's going now.
[10:02 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: With the obligatory montage going back to the 1990s.
[10:03 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Pretending/simulating an augmented reality "Hey You Pikachu!"
[10:04 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: They really like showing the evolution between link cables to wireless communication.
[10:05 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: This is buffering constantly.
[10:06 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: I'd flee to Twitch, but they're not streaming this on Twitch.
[10:06 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: They're in 2013 on the montage. I haven't yet mentioned they keep spamming hashtags in the montage.
[10:08 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Montage finally ending.
[10:08 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: ...hopefully.
[10:08 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Ishihara from the Pokémon Company talking.
[10:09 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Interestingly, he has plushies not only of Charizard, but also Venusaur and Blastoise.
[10:09 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Mr. Takato Umohofgmyrdnjsee is presenting New Pokémon Snap.
[10:10 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: (You can't expect me to transcribe that guy's name.)

New Pokémon Snap Bouffalant herd in the field
Obligatory Bouffalant photos.

[10:11 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: "Oh, it's Tyranitar! What a wild way to eat!"
Sounds insulting.
[10:12 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: New Pokémon Snap comes with an in-game photo editor, and then you can share them online.
[10:12 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: (In-game content sharing.)
[10:13 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Still dunno how that justifies $60.
[10:13 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: They're promoting Kanto-themed celebrations in Pokémon GO and some other events in other games. Wotever.
[10:14 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Latest news about THE VIDEOGAMES.
[10:14 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: ALRIGHT.
[10:14 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: ALRIIIIIGHT
[10:14 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: POKéMON 2007
[10:14 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: DIAMOND/PEARL/PLATINUM?
[10:14 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: "Experience the brilliance once more"
[10:14 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: wtf
[10:15 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: CHIBI SINNOH?

Pokémon Brilliant Diamond Shining Pearl remakes chibi human designs overworld link room
Actually, the DS games looked even MORE chibi than this.
I will write a dedicated article on the topic if I have to.

[10:15 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: "Brilliant Diamond" "Shining Pearl"
[10:15 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Releasing worldwide Late 2021.

Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Pokémon Shining Pearl logos Releasing Worldwide Late 2021
Wait, that's about nine months from now!

[10:16 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: But there's more.
[10:16 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: A SINNOH PREQUEL?

Pokémon Arceus Legends ink drawing Piplup Spheal Sealeo
This is giving me Ōkami vibes and I really like the excited Piplup.
(I wouldn't mind if the whole game looked like this...)

[10:16 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Uh...
[10:16 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: wtf
[10:17 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: It's ancient Dawn acting like a Zelda character?
[10:18 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Arceus cutscene.
[10:18 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: "Pokémon Legends Arceus"

Pokémon Arceus Legends Lucario Staraptor ancient Dawn
I guess this is Dawn's direct ancestor?

[10:18 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Releasing worldwide in early 2022.
[10:18 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Uh...
[10:18 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Wot was that?
[10:18 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: WHY DOES IT KEEP BUFFERING
[10:19 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl are “remakes” developed by ILCA Inc, which developed Pokémon... HOME? Still directed by Masuda.
[10:19 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: That doesn't sound like a good sign?
[10:20 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Well I guess it's probably better than GAME FREAK?
[10:20 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: The Underground is there.
[10:20 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: "Nostalgic yet fresh adventure in the Sinnoh region"...
[10:21 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: As for Pokémon Legends Arceus, it's "a new approach" developed by GAME FREAK.
[10:21 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Well, I'm happy that Sinnoh gets a game about its lore.
[10:21 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: At least I think that's what this is.
[10:22 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Rowlet, Cyndaquil, and Oshawott are apparently imported to Sinnoh.
[10:22 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: And your starter is one of them. (Obviously pick Rowlet.)
[10:22 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: You're creating the first-ever Pokédex. Ancient Sinnoh still has Poké Balls and battles.
[10:23 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: wtf it ended
[10:23 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Alright the buffering put me over a minute behind real-time.
[10:23 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: "Action RPG Adventure for the Nintendo Switch system"
[10:24 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Well, I guess I'm not disappointed? More... "intrigued."
[10:24 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: But distinctly not "hyped."
[10:28 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: ...Really dunno who "ILCA Inc" is.
[10:29 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: If you search that you get all sorts of weird things, including "International Learning Center Algeria" and "Illinois Landscape Contractors Association" and "International Lactation Consultant Association"
[10:30 AM] Ludwig Von Koopa: ...Well guess we'll find out more later.

Ludwig is super-okay with the chibi overworld look in the Sinnoh remakes, because that's what the original DS games’ character proportions actually look like. (Back on the DS, human heads were bigger than the rest of their bodies.) He also finds it kinda cute. He just doubts the competence of the people working on the game.

Ludwig wrote an article about how he's always wanted faithful Sinnoh remakes all along.
There's a new Pokémon Presents on those Sinnoh-area games in August 2021!
KoopaTV live-reacted to the Pokémon Day 2022 presentation a year later, which also ended in a new announcement!

    1. I WAS GOING TO SAY "LET'S GO" IN THE LOG BUT I DECIDED UPON "ALRIGHT" BECAUSE "LET'S GO" MIGHT'VE JYNXED IT.

  2. I'm definitely excited! Pokémon lore fascinates me, especially stuff about Legendary Pokémon, so this new prequel game looks super interesting. Plus, we're getting an open-world Pokémon game! How cool is that?

    1. I don't like open-world games, but... I do really, really like Sinnoh lore.

I hope this takes place in the age before Spiritomb got sealed away, because I really want that to be a boss battle.

    2. Oh, that would be super cool! I wonder if we'll find out what the heck those 108 spirits did to get sealed away. Then again, since Pokemon is still considered a kids' series, or at least kid-friendly, I doubt it'll be addressed directly. I definitely don't think they'll show it on-screen. It would still be a really awesome boss fight. I'm already imagining the battle theme!

    3. I think you could show it or reference it and still get to be rated E!

    1. I guess Legends looks better by virtue of being an open-world Pokemon but it doesn't look that different from SwSh. It looks just as lifeless and graphically weak. I dunno what's going on at Game Freak, Nintendo, whoever the fuck is calling the shots, but this is just pathetic at this point. I'm unironically considering buying a DS Lite/DSi just to finish Platinum and replay HeartGold at this point.

    2. Reminder that the 3DS also can play DS games in the card slot.

I don't think it's wise to judge graphics when it's so far off from release.

    3. EXCUSE ME? DO NOT DISS Ludwig Von Koopa. He is the BEST koopaling EVER!! For you to just say he sucks, really tells what kind of a idiot you are. Seriously, his design, boss fights, music, and everything else is so good!! Honestly, you should just look at yourself in a mirror and say, "Where did it go wrong?" Disliking Ludwig Von Koopa is a SERIOUS sin. Infact, I think that you "sux." Not Ludwig Von Koopa. Not the game. You. Kumieee sux.

  4. My thoughts on the games shown:

-Pokemon Snap looks beautiful, and I'll probably get it eventually.

-I like the look of the Diamond/Pearl remakes, but my favorite thing about that gen is the story content that was added in Pokemon Platinum (mainly the Distortion World part), so I'm waiting for news about whether that's included in the remakes or not.

-I'm uncertain about Pokemon Legends: Arceus since it looks open world, but I'm cautiously intrigued.

Also, ILCA did some sort of support work for Dragon Quest XI, Nier Automata, and Code Vein, among others, although it isn't clear exactly what they contributed to for those games. For some it seems like it was just working on assets.

    1. Alright, let's see, according to Mobygames...

      Nier Automata:
      ILCA Inc.
      Producers Takuya Iwasaki, Hideyuki Mizutani
      Assistant Producer Nao Takahashi
      Trailer Production Takuto Aoki

      Code Vein:
      3D Model Production: ILCA, Inc.

And Dragon Quest XI ain't got anything.

...Well, that doesn't tell us much.

  5. Exciting! Now people can stop clamoring for a diamond pearl remake. Although I wish they came up with more creative remake names. Brilliant diamond is fine, but come on, shining pearl? In any case, I think the direct was pretty good. Which makes me excited for some of the other anniversary directs, fingers crossed they don't forget about Metroid's.
