KoopaTV's Live Reactions to the Super Mario Bros. 35th Anniversary Direct!

By LUDWIG VON KOOPA - A lot is happening, and then it all ends March 31, 2021!

After (privately) believing that anything around a Super Mario Bros. 35-year anniversary had to be FAKE NEWS, Nintendo pwned me by suddenly, without warning, uploading a “Super Mario Bros. 35th Anniversary Direct” this morning.

Kamek said early in the morning that he wanted to live-react to it with me, which meant that I had to go through the whole day and avoid other people and social media and whatever so I wouldn't be spoiled. I tried to also get my sister, Wendy, on this live-viewing party, but she kept giving me weird excuses like wanting to raid and “might be heading out to eat in a bit”. Hmph. So it's just me and Kamek reacting to this today:

While this Direct's existence pwned my expectations, will its contents end up pwning my wallet as well? In other words, do we care about the products mentioned in this? Find out from our live reactions!

[4:42 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: ALRIGHT

[4:42 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: UHH tell me when to start.

[4:42 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: I have like a bazillion notifications from other people I haven't checked.

[4:42 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: 'cause I'm sure they're all about this.

[4:43 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Unlike apparently many other people, I get distressed seeing unread notifications or emails.

[4:46 PM] Kamek: I hate unread emails

[4:46 PM] Kamek: but

[4:46 PM] Kamek: it's a necessary evil at this point

[4:46 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Nope, it's unnecessary.

[4:46 PM] Kamek: we'll talk about that later

[4:46 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Alright.

[4:46 PM] Kamek: I'm ready

[4:46 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: ...

[4:46 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: 3

[4:46 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: 2

[4:46 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: 1

[4:46 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: go

[4:47 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Rating Pending to TEEN

[4:47 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Teen?

[4:47 PM] Kamek: oof

[4:47 PM] Kamek: covid statement

[4:47 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Is there gonna be an edgy remake or something?

[4:48 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Super Mari0 Bros on a physical Game & Watch.

[4:48 PM] Kamek: I'd buy a Game & Watch

[4:48 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: And the Lost Levels.

[4:48 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: And the "Ball" game featuring the plumber as Mr. Game & Watch.

[4:48 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: "Limited Production Available November 13"

[4:48 PM] Kamek: i don't know why he didn't say LCD

[4:48 PM] Kamek: and spelled it out for everyone

[4:48 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Big missed opportunity, since the only reason Game & Watch matters are the Game & Watch Gallery music remixes.

(OCTOPUS)

[4:49 PM] Kamek: super mario cat world out on switch? but why >>

[4:49 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Anyway, Super Mari0 3D World (the multiplayer furry one) is coming to Switch.

[4:49 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Because every other Wii U game is on Switch.

[4:49 PM] Kamek: hmm

[4:49 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: PLUS

[4:50 PM] Kamek: plus?

[4:50 PM] Kamek: plus rain

[4:50 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Oh I wanted it to be a math game.

[4:50 PM] Kamek: ancient cat temple

[4:50 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Addition.

[4:50 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: BOWSER'S FURY

[4:50 PM] Kamek: uhhhhh

[4:50 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: (I read it as "Bowser's Furry")

[4:51 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: ...It's literally Tetris 99 mechanics.

[4:51 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Exclusive to Nintendo Switch Online members.

[4:51 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: "Playable until March 31 2021"

[4:51 PM] Kamek: why though

[4:51 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: ...why is it available only for a limited time?

[4:51 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: "What could this one be?"

[4:51 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: AH

[4:51 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: IT'S ME

[4:51 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: WTF

[4:51 PM] Kamek: whats the point of havinga preview announcement if it says nothing about what it is!

[4:51 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: HE THREW A RED SHELL AT ME

[4:52 PM] Kamek: is that morton

[4:52 PM] Kamek: whoa

[4:52 PM] Kamek: this is trippy

Mario Kart Live Home Circuit Wendy O. Koopa Ludwig Von blue Piranha Plant goop
See, this is why Wendy needed to join in the reaction log.
We appeared in Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit in first and second together, beating the plumber!
(Though the sound-effect that played from the Piranha Plant sounds disgusting.)

[4:52 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Multiracial family

[4:52 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: (The humans, not Morton + others)

[4:52 PM] Kamek: I don't think that's the implication

[4:53 PM] Kamek: oooo

[4:53 PM] Kamek: me

Mario Kart Live Home Circuit Kamek flying broom magic wand
Kamek making an important cameo appearance!

[4:53 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: "Home Circuit"

[4:53 PM] Kamek: this is a very creative idea

[4:53 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Uhh

[4:53 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: So is that some kinda augmented reality thing?

[4:53 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: With Koopalings?

[4:53 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: But physical plumber karts?

[4:53 PM] Kamek: ooooo

[4:53 PM] Kamek: pins

[4:54 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Nintendo New York Store to get exclusive shirts...?

[4:54 PM] Kamek: Can you order from new york store online?

[4:55 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: ew LEGO

[4:55 PM] Kamek: jacks pacific is still alive?

[4:55 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: (No new LEGO announcement just advertising what's already there)

[4:55 PM] Kamek: oh yeah All-stars exists

[4:55 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Available now.

[4:55 PM] Kamek: last announcement

[4:55 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: With your Nintendo Switch Online subscription.

[4:55 PM] Kamek: but

[4:56 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: "It's a me Mari0" yeah we know

[4:56 PM] Kamek: half way through

[4:56 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: SM64 on Nintendo Switch?

[4:56 PM] Kamek: Why are they announcing supermario64

[4:57 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Well there's a whole generation that doesn't know where Petey Piranha came from.

[4:57 PM] Kamek: oh wow

[4:57 PM] Kamek: I mean it makes sense since the store is gone

[4:57 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Super Plumber Galaxy.

[4:57 PM] Kamek: ah

[4:57 PM] Kamek: I see what they did there

[4:57 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: "Super Mari0 3D All Stars" along with the All-Stars from SNES.

Super Mario Bros. 35th anniversary every game you can play on Nintendo Switch
Why was the ESRB notice at the beginning Rating Pending to Teen?
Everything shown (all of the above, Splatoon 2, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate) was E10+ or below.
What was rated T?

[4:58 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: "What did you think?" I dunno not much.

[4:59 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: "That's it!"

[4:59 PM] Kamek: there's still 4 minutes!

[4:59 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: There's four minutes. <_<

[4:59 PM] Kamek: oh

[4:59 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: "Medley"

[4:59 PM] Kamek: is this necessary?

[4:59 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Uh...

[4:59 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: I dunno I might be in it.

[4:59 PM] Kamek: he should have died there to that hammer bro

[4:59 PM] Kamek: smb2 had an ice level?

[5:00 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: They shouldn't bring back the NES/SNES versions, but the GBA versions.

[5:00 PM] Kamek: wait

[5:00 PM] Kamek: the smb2 sphinx

[5:00 PM] Kamek: had the sm64 penguin noise

[5:00 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: ...

[5:00 PM] Kamek: replay that later

[5:00 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Alright.

[5:01 PM] Kamek: what the

[5:01 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: I should note that they don't consider Yoshi's Island to be in this series.

[5:01 PM] Kamek: they are changing the noises

[5:01 PM] Kamek: they edited

[5:01 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: I don't either, but some people do.

[5:01 PM] Kamek: the video

[5:01 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: You sure you remember it properly?

[5:01 PM] Kamek: man new super mario bros on the DS

[5:01 PM] Kamek: that was a trip

[5:01 PM] Kamek: yeah

[5:02 PM] Kamek: I'll explain it later

[5:02 PM] Kamek: it's a video editing trick

[5:02 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: I forgot Queen Bee was in Galaxy and only remember her from Kart.

[5:02 PM] Kamek: ...mario kart queen bee?

[5:02 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Ya.

[5:02 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: I think it was in 7.

[5:03 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Alright so I wasn't in the medley.

[5:03 PM] Kamek: oh

[5:03 PM] Kamek: it's over

[5:03 PM] Kamek: .......

[5:03 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: ...

[5:04 PM] Kamek: uh

[5:04 PM] Kamek: thoughts?

[5:04 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Uh...

[5:05 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: I'm...

[5:05 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: I'm most excited for the Splatfest. <_<;;;;

[5:05 PM] Kamek: 13:12

[5:05 PM] Kamek: I guess that's not the penguin noise

[5:05 PM] Kamek: But it's close!

[5:06 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Yeah that's not even SMB2.

[5:06 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: That's SML!

[5:06 PM] Kamek: oh

[5:06 PM] Kamek: oops

[5:07 PM] Kamek: anyway. Talking about the video itself

[5:07 PM] Kamek: 13:43

[5:07 PM] Kamek: they either took samples out of the games audio

[5:07 PM] Kamek: or they turned off the music in the game

[5:07 PM] Kamek: because key game sound effects are missing

[5:07 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: 13:43 referring to SMW caping?

[5:08 PM] Kamek: no

[5:08 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Or the start of SM64?

[5:08 PM] Kamek: the totality of sm64

[5:08 PM] Kamek: 14:11

[5:08 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Is the ball supposed to be making a noise?

[5:08 PM] Kamek: weird coin sound

[5:08 PM] Kamek: yes

[5:09 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: That does seem like an off-brand noise.

[5:09 PM] Kamek: which leads me to believe that someone had to edit in the sound samples

[5:09 PM] Kamek: and got one incorrect

[5:09 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: But why does that sample exist at all? >_>

[5:09 PM] Kamek: to allow the music to take presidence

[5:10 PM] Kamek: precedence

[5:10 PM] Kamek: 14:16

[5:10 PM] Kamek: manta rays also making different sounds

[5:10 PM] Kamek: I don't even know what that sound effect is

[5:10 PM] Kamek: oh

[5:10 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Me neither.

You were asking about prices...

[5:10 PM] Kamek: it's a FLUDD noise

[5:11 PM] Kamek: I'm calling $39.99 for SMA:3d

[5:11 PM] Kamek: SMA-S:3D?

[5:11 PM] Kamek: ew

[5:11 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: SMA:3D is $59.99.

[5:11 PM] Kamek: holy crap

[5:12 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: SM3D World + Bowser's Furry is $59.99.

[5:12 PM] Kamek: that's a little exploitative

[5:12 PM] Kamek: especially during a pandemic

[5:12 PM] Kamek: AND it's a limited release?

[5:13 PM] Kamek: I got super nostalgic looking at NSMB for the DS

[5:13 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: That augmented reality Kart has no price.

[5:13 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: (yet)

[5:13 PM] Kamek: my emotions...

[5:13 PM] Kamek: yeah the price ruins it

[5:13 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Game & Watch has no price yet.

[5:13 PM] Kamek: that's all I have to say I think

[5:13 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: You can buy the Splatfest shirts right now for $30 each.

[5:13 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: On the Nintendo online store.

[5:14 PM] Kamek: that's also too much

[5:14 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: I'll eagerly await the in-game dialogue for that, because right now, I don't know why anyone would ever choose Super Mushroom over Super Star.

[5:14 PM] Kamek: bigness

[5:14 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: It's 60% cotton and 40% polyester.

[5:15 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Sad!

If you're wondering about Kamek's e-mails, he says it's because “well gmail it divides things into promotions and social networking emails then primary emails”, but Ludwig reads everything in all of his folders. Anyway, there are a lot of things to consider and comment on, though please save Splatfest commentary for four months from now. Will you want to buy anything from this?

Super Mario 3D All-Stars is out. Ludwig didn't get it, but how about Kamek?
Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit is out, and it's quite insidious, with Mushroom Kingdom spyware.

That Splatfest commentary is finally here.
Out of the many times KoopaTV had a reaction log, this one for the 35th Anniversary won the Best KoopaTV Reaction Log award of 2020!

  1. I expected your Splatfest choice to put into consideration what your enemy would attack you with and that your enemy with a Super Mushroom would be much easier to deal with than your enemy with a Super Star.

Also at this point would you consider the Squid Research Lab to be fake news at this point, first saying Chaos vs Order is the last Splatfest, then all Splatfests post Chaos vs Order would be repeated and now a completely new Splatfest theme?

    1. Don't "expected" past-tense me; I haven't made any final choice.

Scientists claim that the SCIENCE is always developing and subject to change, so what is the last Splatfest is actually not, per further research.
(With the exception of global warming; that's apparently final and everyone must shut up and accept it.)

  2. So, it's not live, but I'd like to share my own reactions to each portion of the presentation.

    Mario & Watch: Meh.

3D World Switch: ...it WOULD be nice to be able to compare level times with people again (which I'd assume they'll bring back for the Switch version) but I don't think it's worth a buy...even with the Bowser's Fury thing. (also, I'm sure you're not the only person who though "Bowser's Furry" when they saw that. ;) )

Super Mario 35: Oh hey, it's Nintendo's official Mario Battle Royale, and it looks dope! Also, I'm going to be an optimist for once and say that after March of next year, they're going to roll out something even better--say, something with even more than 35 players and more mechanics, which will replace this.

Mario Kart Home Circuit: HOLY crap that looks cool but there's no way I could possibly set it up where I live. But I hope I can find someone who Twitch streams it so I can follow them IMMEDIATELY! Like, it looks like it'd be way more fun to watch than to play, personally.

6:35 to roughly 8:15: "MERCHANDISING, MERCHANDISING! Where the REAL money from the game franchise is made!" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fgRFQJCHcPw

Super Mario All-Stars: I mean...I can play all those in the Nintendo Online collection--in their AUTHENTIC versions I might add--but eh, I'm getting it with purchase, so cool. (Also, Kamek, SMB2 has basically an entire ice WORLD. I've had a lot of trouble with it.)

Super Mario 3D Allstars (start): Last announcement? There's like, half the dang video left! (paraphrased from memory)

SM3DWAS: (proper) (shows SM64) Wait, what. (shows Sunshine) WAIT WHAT?! (shows Galaxy) WAIT THIS IS REAL?! WTF I THOUGHT THERE WAS NO WAY THOSE RUMORS WERE ACTUALLY TRUE! Welp, that's $60 of MINE down the proverbial drain, probably!

(aftermath) I was salty about SMG apparently requiring Motion Controls because I do not own a joycon with correctly functioning joysticks. But apparently it will only be required for the pointer, which will make Star Bit collection a tad difficult but it's not a deal-breaker like Odyssey, where a significant fraction of Unique Moons are impossible to collect without the joycons. So, at least I can still play the entire game with Galaxy.

    1. Right now we know nothing about what Bowser's Furry entails, so I guess that mandates further articles.

      Interesting optimism.

The Splatfest T-shirts are now out-of-stock, which they were not at the time of logging this. The shirts are considered to be Splatoon MERCHANDISING and not Plumb-scum merchandise, however.

SMB2 USA's ice world (world 4) is three levels long, and a third of that is flying on a Birdo egg over an ocean. He probably warp-zoned in World 3 to skip it entirely.

      Delete
    2. a) Hey, there's a good bit of level after the Birdo egg ride. A SIXTH of that world is flying on a Birdo egg over the ocean!
      b) There's a warp in world THREE?!

    5. Well, put some more thought into your comments.

...There's value for the audience knowing what's the first thing on our mind upon watching content, but that can't be replicated on the comments section.

  4. I actually believed that the rumor was true because Pikmin 3 Deluxe was the only remaining game announced for this year so there had to be something big for the holidays. I never would have imagined it would only release in two weeks, though.

    1. I'm a believer that it's no coincidence that March 31, 2021 is the last day of Nintendo's fiscal year, and they want to funnel as much sales into the remaining months of that year as they can.
