(Favouritism Bracket) Ludwig's Best. Game. Ever. 2015 Votes

By LUDWIG VON KOOPA - A parallel universe where the only voter is Ludwig.

I think anyone paying attention has noticed that I'm really not happy about the final result about the GameFAQs Best. Game. Ever. 2015 contest. And believe me, I went and rallied for the result I wanted. And in a pretty despicable way at times.

Let's pretend that didn't happen. Let's go off of the games that I voted for back in Round 1 of the GameFAQs Best. Game. Ever. 2015 contest. Let's suppose that every game I said I'd support in Round 1 won! We'll call this "Ludwig's favouritism bracket". And I'm going to have this go over every round in the contest. Let's see this to its conclusion and settle it:

What videogame do I like the most? (...Assuming it's in the bracket. And it probably is.)

GameFAQs Best Game Ever 20th anniversary edition favorites bracket Kooky Von Koopa high floating
You're probably smart enough to get why I chose that picture to represent me for this premise.

ROUND 2:

Division I:

(1) Chrono Trigger vs. (8) Dragon Quest VIII

(12) Perfect Dark vs. (11) Civilization IV
(3) Super Metroid vs. 6) Super Mario Galaxy
(10) Final Fantasy XII vs. (2) The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask

Division VII:

(16) Shenmue vs. (8) The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
(12) Shovel Knight vs. (13) Chrono Cross
(14) Binding of Isaac vs. (11) Resident Evil
(7) Fallout: New Vegas vs. (15) Paper Mario

Division VIII:

(16) Splatoon vs. (8) Earthbound
(12) Team Fortress 2 vs. (14) Mother 3
(11) Silent Hill 2 vs. (7) Starcraft
(15) Virtue's Last Reward vs. (13) Bayonetta 2

ROUND 3:

Division I:

(1) Chrono Trigger vs. (12) Mega Man X
(3) Super Smash Bros. Melee vs. (7) Metal Gear Solid 4

Division II:

(8) Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door vs. (4) The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
(3) Super Smash Bros. Wii U vs. (2) Final Fantasy VII

Division III:

(1) Super Mario Bros. 3 vs. (5) Portal 2
(14) Life is Strange vs. (2) Super Mario World

Division IV:

(16) Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney vs. 5) Metroid Prime
(6) Final Fantasy Tactics vs. (7) The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess

Division V:

(1) The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time vs. 4) Final Fantasy IX
(14) Donkey Kong Country 2 vs. (15) Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: Trials & Tribulations

No one is stopping Phoenix Wright, but I do want to put the good word for Donkey Kong Country 2 being absolutely amazing.

Division VI:

(1) The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past vs. (12) Perfect Dark
(3) Super Metroid vs. (2) The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask

Division VII:

(16) Shenmue vs. (13) Chrono Cross
(11) Resident Evil vs. (15) Paper Mario

Division VIII:

(16) Splatoon vs. (14) Mother 3
(7) Starcraft vs. (15) Virtue's Last Reward

ROUND 4:

Division I:

(1) Chrono Trigger vs. (3) Super Smash Bros. Melee

Again, I feel really bad for doing this...

Division II:

(8) Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door vs. (3) Super Smash Bros. Wii U

Just letting you know... I really do love both of these games.

Division III:

(1) Super Mario Bros. 3 vs. (2) Super Mario World

Well, this is a classic. I don't really have a strong argument in favour of either game. Feel free to argue this in the comments.

Division IV:

(16) Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney vs. (7) The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess

Division V:

4) Final Fantasy IX vs. (15) Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: Trials & Tribulations

Division VI:

(1) The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past vs. (3) Super Metroid

I recently played and beat Metroid Fusion and I didn't like how it trapped me, unwittingly, into a point of no return. I WANTED TO EXPLORE AND GET THINGS I KNEW WERE WAITING. Super Metroid is much better about it. It's basically a perfectly-crafted game in terms of design. Metroid Fusion isn't...

Division VII:

(13) Chrono Cross vs. (15) Paper Mario

Division VIII:

(16) Splatoon vs. (15) Virtue's Last Reward

This division is SO weak.

ROUND 5:

Quarterfinals 1:

(3) Super Smash Bros. Melee vs. (3) Super Smash Bros. Wii U

Super Smash Bros. Melee encompassed more of my time growin' up and all, but... come on. Super Smash Bros. For Wii U is amazingly fun, doesn't feel weirdly outdated when I play it now, and I'm in it. And the soundtrack destroys the GameCube iteration.

Quarterfinals 2:

(1) Super Mario Bros. 3 vs. (16) Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney

Well, this is so obvious.

Quarterfinals 3:

(15) Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: Trials & Tribulations vs. (3) Super Metroid

While Super Metroid is an exemplary example of level design, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: Trials & Tribulations is exemplary in being awesome with story, characters, music, and basically what KoopaTV loves to value. Without Ace Attorney this site wouldn't exist, or at least not the way it turned out. (Yet, I despise Undertale despite its proponents saying those three things are what Undertale specialises in.)

Quarterfinals 4:

(15) Paper Mario vs. (16) Splatoon

I think Splatoon might be the game that's been the subject of the most KoopaTV articles in the past six months, if not the whole year. I don't know if that's statistically true, but it feels right! That said, back in the day, Paper Mario actually had even more of my attention. 'specially with fan-fiction and all. And it damn deserves it. Check out my Let's Play of it... BADGELESS!

ROUND 6:

Semifinals 1:

(3) Super Smash Bros. Wii U vs. (16) Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney

You know I love both games... so much... I wouldn't say I support Super Smash Bros. For Wii U out of recency bias or anything, especially since I recently did go through Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney once again with Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy. That said, we literally did have Super Smash Bros. For Wii U versus that whole Trilogy in Game of THAT Year 2014... And the former came up on top. (I promise that KoopaTV's Game of THAT Year 2015 will have headings and anchors like this article does.)

Semifinals 2:

(15) Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: Trials & Tribulations vs. (15) Paper Mario

You know this is really tough. And which one I'd put up on top depends on my mood! If it were the whole Trilogy vs. Paper Mario then the full-force of Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy wins here. But just the best of that trilogy? I dunno. ...Yeah, I'll go with Ace Attorney here, but since you just read my explanation above, you know how the finals will turn out.

ROUND 7:

FINAL MATCH:

(3) Super Smash Bros. Wii U vs. 15) Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: Trials & Tribulations

Ta-da. You know, I hope Ace Attorney considers it an honour that I put both of in the semi-finals (with one in the finals) compared to the REAL GameFAQs contest where both games lost in Round 1. Also don't hate me for what the anchor url is for this. (Put your mouse over "FINAL MATCH".)

Well, that's it. Apparently, I think Super Smash Bros. For Wii U is the best game ever made. I wonder how much higher I'd think of it if it didn't have nasty characters like Pac-Man?

RANKINGS

Since I didn't beat it into you my game preferences hard enough and we can make this article even longer, let's turn to... This GameFAQs Best. Game. Ever. sorter! It eventually will create a big ranking of all the games in the contest that hopefully will counteract bad bracket placements.

The following rankings may contradict some of the decisions I made above or during the actual tournament. Whatever, it's not perfect! I took it over a month ago. There are probably tons of interesting conclusions you can make from the following table, but I wouldn't look too much into it. I'm not you, though, so knock yourself out. (...Okay, Super Mario RPG is waaay above The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion.)

FYI: The highest-ranking game I haven't played is Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. The lowest-ranking game I have played (I think) is World of Warcraft.

There might be some typos or other errors in this post. There is a lot of room for something to be messed up! Let Ludwig know if that's the case, and let him know what YOUR picks would be!

  1. I'd let you know what my picks would be. ......except that I already did one of these, of course. :)

    1. The overall themes of ours are pretty similar, I like to think?

...By the way don't think I ripped you off or anything since I was obviously planning this since before you did yours. :o

    2. (I just noticed you bolded both Splatoon and Virtue's Last Reward in their face-off in round 4.)

Several common themes, also several differences... The greatest common point between ours is how far the Phoenix Wright games went. I think mine has somewhat more of a bias toward RPGs.

      Obviously, of course.

    3. (Thanks for the correction! I knew I'd miss something!)

But I have a huge bias toward (J)RPGs as it is. I mean, you had an RPG winning the whole thing, which I didn't do.

Though I guess only one of my Top 8 was an RPG, and you had like...5.

    4. Yeah, my RPG/JRPG bias is definitely stronger. XD

    5. That's probably scary when I already tell people my two favourite kinds of games are JRPGs and platformers.

    1. (Whoa, she's not a witch!)

So after this was written, I eventually did play Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors and Virtue's Last Reward, and I would now have 999 beat Twilight Princess.

(Mentioning this because Persona 4's first opponent was 999.)

*shrug* Yeah, guess no love there.
