The Ignorance of Sarkeesian Haters

By LUDWIG VON KOOPA - If you thought I was out of character before...

There is something amiss in the air...

Let me explain.

Defend Anita Sarkeesian is KoopaTV's holiday gift to you to close out 2014. When in the November 2014 Newsletter I said there "will be a photo finish end to the year" I meant the release of Defend Anita Sarkeesian.

Obviously I want as many people to be exposed to it as possible because I worked hard on it, and I want people to understand that, unlike many other blogs out there, KoopaTV is different because we contribute to the arts. (Among a lot of other reasons.) Not because I'm an Anita Sarkeesian fan, because anyone who has half a brain can figure out that I'm not. Especially even if your first and only exposure to KoopaTV is the Defend Anita Sarkeesian landing page. Why? Because that page states two things:
  1. We didn't come up with the game idea. We don't know who did, but whoever did did it under existential threat.
  2. We theorised that it was Anita Sarkeesian herself because we have several anti-Sarkeesian articles that are literally linked to right there for your reading pleasure. (By the way, we haven't gotten any response from whoever did request it after we released it. No news is good news, right?)
So how totally stupid do you have to be to attack me like I'm some kind of Sarkeesian fanboy? ...Apparently, it's commonplace among so-called "gamers". (Same people who refuse to play a game, of course.)

Anita Sarkeesian should not just be beaten up, but she should be ended.
This guy is in no position to be talking about knowing virtually anything.

Which leads to the title of this article, "The Ignorance of Sarkeesian Haters", because you gotta be really stupid.

More stupid people. Apparently KoopaTV is a SJW organization.

Before, I promoted Defend Anita Sarkeesian out of the site's interest. Now, I'm making it my own goal. Why? Because these knucklehead gamers think that people literally should not deserve to live because those people have terrible opinions. What? No, you can't threaten people's lives over that. That goes against the very fabric of the Bill of Rights. (I guess if you're not in America, you wouldn't understand that, but hey, all these dudes are Americans.)

You know that saying? "I may not agree with what you say, but to your death I will defend your right to say it." Apparently Voltaire said it. In the case of Anita, yeah, this might end up literally coming true. That's what the word "Defend" in Defend Anita Sarkeesian means: Defending her life from existential threats from idiots like you those people who make those threats. It's not about defending her actions as a radical left-wing feminist. That's hard to do in an interesting game! I'm sure you could pull it off in a choose-your-dialogue type of thing, but KoopaTV wants its name associated with good games, like Best PC Game of 2013 winner Trayvon Tyson's Punch-Out!!.

This guy actually played the game, or he would not be able to get the screenshot. His score? 10/10. I rest my case.

Other thoughts from people who have played the game include that it's great, interesting, and perfect from an artistic point of view. ...Oh, and the ending credits song is really catchy. And I agree with that. If you like EarthBound music, please play Defend Anita Sarkeesian.

The new title screen warns you to have your sound on.

One very notable thing I have not been able to do: Get an opinion of an Anita Sarkeesian supporter on the game. Where do you find these people? I've targeted several tumblr and Twitter posts towards that crowd and no bites. Is the KoopaTV Twitter on a social justice warrior blocklist? One #GamerGate member suggested that since these people don't actually play videogames, they wouldn't play Defend Anita Sarkeesian.

...Well if you're not going to play a free game that fundamentally shares your ideals about women not being damsels and taking charge of their own destiny, then don't bitch about how there aren't enough games that do that!

If you know any Sarkeesian-loving people in your life, please share Defend Anita Sarkeesian. (And share it to anyone else too.) In the meantime, I'll keep doing what I can. To me, the game is not about Anita Sarkeesian, despite the details that went into making a "homage" of Beat Up Anita Sarkeesian.

It's about defending the First Amendment, and that's something I'm always up to doing.

Ludwig was pretty uncomfortable writing this given how much he dislikes Anita Sarkeesian as a person, but whatever. At some point, KoopaTV will move on from its incessant promotion of Defend Anita Sarkeesian. You'll just have to wait for that day patiently!

As a reminder, Ludwig has met Anita personally, and wasn't impressed.
KoopaTV thought being left-wing crazies was only for April Fools. Apparently we just have to act normal!
Ludwig reveals the disparity in this interview about those who have played the game and those who have not.

  1. Saw this on Tumblr because I troll the tags but one thing that I always say when it comes up is that there is a general misunderstanding of the First Amendment by a lot of people.
    The First Amendment DOES
    - protect you when you're criticizing the government (hence why Fox News is able to exist)
    - protect you when you're criticizing the police
    - protect you when you're criticizing your mayor
    - protect you when you're criticizing public figures in positions of power

    The First Amendment DOES NOT
    - protect you when you're criticizing your neighbor
    - protect you when you're criticizing your parents
    - protect you when you're criticizing another person on the Internet
-in general, protect you when you're criticizing another private citizen in the US

That means that while you can spend the whole day saying how corrupt Congress is and they're all owned by Shinra, you cannot necessarily tell everyone and their grandmother that the car salesman down the street only sells lemons and likes little girl porn. The first is a legitimate protestation of something the government did; the second is potentially slander and can get you dragged into court.

The problem is that Anita Sarkeesian herself is a private-ish citizen with a public job. Take for instance the Kardashians - they're still private citizens but given their celebrity status they probably can't drag someone to court for speaking bad about them without really good reason.

No one deserves harassment of any type, mind. But I'm not so sure that people can cling to the First Amendment to protect their right to say she's a hack because the First Amendment -only protects freedom of speech against the government and public figures-. Of course given how much she clings to Fair Use to cover her own questionable methods, the whole thing's pretty absurd anyway.

    1. My point is that people should be allowed to express their opinions without being threatened with death or other acts of violence.

The First Amendment does not allow you to threaten people. Threatening people for their non-violent thoughts is, you know, uncivilised.

So even though I think Anita is wrong on... many things, I'll still defend her right to say things.

Granted, she also is critical of not just the videogame industry and the media, but of other things also. Including those crazy right-wingers like me. But hey, that's fine.

  2. I agree wholeheartedly - Anita (and her supporters) have every right to speak their mind and those that dislike them do too. My line in the sand is hateful speech which is happening on both side, but I think that has to do more with anonymity on the internet and accountability than any misogny / misandry / being mean and nasty in general.
It's just that First Amendment seems to be a blanket lately by a lot of people just because. And it doesn't work that way, and won't work that way once you step away from the keyboard. I'm happy to support discussion but it's not consequence-free.

    1. First you're not beaded, now you're not bearded.

      Next you won't be breaded!

Yeah, I deny that there is that kind of wide-spread specifically-anti-women thing in the game industry. It's more of an asshole thing. Something I wrote about in detail, supported by facts, here: http://koopatv.blogspot.com/2014/12/taking-down-sarkeesians-victim-culture.html

Here's the thing on anonymity: One of the surreal things about that is that one of the BIGGEST anti-Anita people did not really try to conceal his identity. I'm talking about Ben "Bendilin" Spurr, who made "Beat Up Anita Sarkeesian" to begin with.

I don't know how the hell the dude has a job because if any employer Googles his name you get that he made "Beat Up Anita Sarkeesian".

But I guess he's an exception. Still, that anonymity is amazing. Imagine how much sites like KoopaTV (you should read around the site to get context on why I'd say this) would suffer if we could not have anonymity. That's why this "doxxing" craze is completely harmful to society. You just would lose a lot of behaviour that involves any sort of risk to it.

Oh, and thanks for comin' back!
