Nintendo Live 2023 Has the Worst Possible Registration System, Bypassable by Winning a Splatoon 3 Championship 2023 Qualifier Event

By LUDWIG VON KOOPA - You could also win a Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Championship 2023 Qualifier.

Did you get excited over last month's news of Nintendo of America announcing a Nintendo Live 2023 event—said to be a Nintendo celebration for the fans, but there will NOT be product announcements—in September 2023 in Seattle?

Well, now it's time for all of that excitement to be sucked out of your mind, as Nintendo has announced new and despairing details. Nintendo Live will be held from Friday, September 1 to Monday, September 4, at the Seattle Convention Center. You can register for FREE tickets (which requires a Nintendo Account holders 18+; you can also register as a Family Group) starting on May 31... and tickets will be distributed randomly by lottery. That's right... if you want to attend, there is no guarantee that you'll be able to attend. Odds are, you won't be able to. If you want to schedule some time with friends ahead of time in attending the event, that'll be rather foolish, since it likely will be for nothing. Especially because your lottery ticket will only be for ONE day. That probably speaks to how much content will actually be at Nintendo Live 2023, but it also would be done to be able to fit more people.

There is another detail: At that same timeframe in the same Seattle Convention Center will be PAX West. PAX West and Nintendo Live 2023 will be co-located events, but they will have different ticketing systems. A ticket to Nintendo Live 2023 will not get you into PAX West 2023, and a ticket to PAX West 2023 will not get you to Nintendo Live 2023. However, PAX West ticket-holders will have the opportunity for an additional lottery-based system to also get a free ticket to Nintendo Live. That way, if you do plan on going to Nintendo Live, you should plan on going to PAX West as well. You can actually purchase tickets to PAX West (and guarantee you'll be there as opposed to relying on RNG) and take advantage of their hotel blocks. I don't understand why Nintendo wouldn't just charge for tickets and have the highest bidders win. They might even recoup the costs of the event that way.

Ah, but there are three skill-based opportunities to get in Nintendo Live 2023—and these will have you there for the duration of the event as opposed to just ONE DAY:

  1. Be in the top four competitors of the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Championship 2023 Qualifier on May 27 (Tournament ID: 1197-1366-3531)
  2. Be in the top two teams of the Splatoon 3 Championship 2023 Qualifier Event #1 on June 3–4
  3. Be in the top two teams of the Splatoon 3 Championship 2023 Qualifier Event #2 on June 10–11

I really like the shade of purple in the overlay. I don't like Museum d'Alfonsino, though.

These are the competitively flavoured Splatoon 3 tournaments hosted on battlefy.com where the first day is a Turf War-based Ladder round, and the top sixteen teams get to advance to day two's Ranked mode-based (single-elimination) Bracket round. There is then a double-elimination top four round that is probably livestreamed. The team members of that top two of that top four gets to go to Nintendo Live 2023. Since there are two events, that means four teams total, which could include up to 24 competitors, or 48 people. (Teams are four members plus up to two optional alternates, and if team members are minors, then they will have to bring a parent or guardian with them.)

You'll win a round-trip flight (for you and your parent/guardian if you're a minor) and three nights lodging (a double occupancy room so your parent/guardian can join in, if you're a minor), as well as a trophy, My Nintendo Gold Points, a jacket, backpack, a pin set, and tech decals. The teams that don't get in the top two can also get some of those lesser prizes. (Up to 24 members for First Prize and 48 people for Second Prize, for a total maximum ARV of $82,680. Multiply that by two for two events, and Nintendo is actually putting some serious money into funding these prizes.) The prizes for the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe tournament seem identical, with the exception of the lack of a Second Prize.

The key to a free ride is to try to get a competent competitive Splatoon 3 team to accept you as an alternate player, but then never actually play a game in the tournament. Alternate players are entitled to the same prize packages as the players who actually put in work, after all. Just note that when you're at the event, you will have to then play in the tournament at Nintendo Live 2023, and it is likely to be streamed, or at least recorded.

If you have any questions on how the Splatoon 3 tournament in particular works, please come to its support Discord server. You could also ask me in the comments section of this KoopaTV article, but I happen to be in both places.

I'm most frustrated by the fact that Nintendo refuses to continue their Super Smash Bros. Ultimate tournament series. Why Mario Kart 8 Deluxe but not Super Smash Bros. Ultimate? I think if they won't do a tournament for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate with Nintendo Live, they are never going to sponsor another Super Smash Bros. Ultimate tournament ever again. Rest in peace.

By the end of the article, Ludwig still doesn't understand why Nintendo would make entrance to Nintendo Live 2023 a luck-based mission and not a pay-to-enter mission. It doesn't benefit possible attendees and it doesn't benefit Nintendo. That's why KoopaTV's final KoopaTV Loyalty Rewards Program round, Round 50, has no luck-based elements. It's also free-to-enter and with potentially large and numerous prizes, but you must back that up with 100% skill. Things are better that way, though! Ludwig doesn't plan to enter one of the Splatoon 3 tournaments, and he also doesn't plan to try to win a Nintendo Live 2023 ticket, simply because it would be very inconvenient to handle the off-chance of him winning, since it's so remote a chance that he can't exactly plan his first weekend of September around it.

Nintendo previously had their competitive Splatoon 3 tournaments fly winners off to compete at a tournament in PAX East.
Nintendo not only has a tournament for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate at Nintendo Live, but they have TWO tournaments for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate at Nintendo Live!
There is another so-called tournament to get into Nintendo Live 2023: The NintendoVS Challenge Cup 2023, a Super Smash Bros. Ultimate event. However, you only get tickets and pay for your own airfare and lodging.

  1. I guess not everything is fun when gamified, shame.

    1. Wot here is the gamified element?

    2. Entry to this event is either skill based or you get a randomly generated chance of going. I suppose this means they expect quite a lot of people to go.

    3. Since they've never done this before, I'm sure they don't have a good idea of how many people WANT to go... but surely more than the convention centre can hold.

My emotional thoughts: YES NO MORE SORA IN OFFICIAL TOURNAMENTS!

My logical thoughts: There have been so many sexual scandals in the Smash Bros community that Nintendo wants to move away its brand from that.

    1. Well, the last time Nintendo did something with the community was the Panda Cup, and, uh, that blew up six months ago in disaster.

  3. The lottery is probably to stop scalpers. Would you have suggested raising the price to reduce scalping, as you suggested for the PS5?

    1. Well, you can only raise the price of something that has a price to begin with. So I would've started with a high price (and Nintendo could've done a survey beforehand to come up with that point, since they don't have an existing reference point... but it'd be much higher than the cost to attend PAX West for a day, which is $71) and go from there.

Because the ticket is tied to having a Nintendo Account, that should stop the scalping business by definition, because you won't be able to resell the ticket to someone with a different Nintendo Account.
