The Super Mario Bros. Movie Direct MAR10 2023 Trailer | Live Reaction Log

By LUDWIG VON KOOPA - Embarrassing.

I hate MAR10 Day the most out of all of the character-based days in March. Mario is awful and no one should like him. Getting that point across is the whole purpose of this website. I hope we're doing a good job at that. ...Please say we are.

On March 9 (notably March 10 in Japan), Nintendo held this Nintendo Direct:

A Direct that's not even seven minutes long doesn't really warrant a Reaction Log. But I don't think Mario Day deserves much effort from KoopaTV, given our natural opposition towards the subject.

It is worth noting that Nintendo has put some first-party games featuring Mario (and Yoshi and Donkey Kong) on sale for about $20 off. I'm not into that sort of thing. There is a way more important sale going on now that I'll write about in more detail next week.

[5:01 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Blah blah MAR10 Day and how to read it from Miyamoto.
[5:01 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: I'm not publishing this until it's March 10 in the United States.
[5:03 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: The voice actors are talking to each other, which is of little interest to me.
[5:03 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Though "Bowser Day" is in the talks.
[5:04 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: King Bowser has some floating cages of penguins and a Luma hoping for the sweet release of death.
[5:04 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: ...King Bowser is portrayed as not knowing what a Spiny is.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie final trailer Bowser Spinies whatever those things are Spiny
This movie is inaccurately portraying King Bowser as a bumbling, bad king who doesn't even know the species name of his own subjects.
That's inexcusable on the part of the producers, and I directly blame Shigeru Miyamoto.

[5:04 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: What?????
[5:05 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: And the plumber is teaming up with Donkey Kong.
[5:05 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: The Plumber just hijacked a Koopa Troopa's cart??
[5:05 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: What a JERK.
[5:05 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: "What did you all think?" asked Shigeru Miyamoto
[5:05 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic are the Directors of the movie and talking to us.
[5:06 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Rainbow Road and vehicle design are big deals.
[5:07 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: So I guess it's probably a reoccurring or very climactic scene.
[5:07 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Shigeru Miyamoto is very excited about...boots.
[5:07 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: And that's how he ends the Direct.
[5:07 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: About boots.
[5:07 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: That sucked.
[5:07 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Why does King Dad not know what Spinies are?
[5:07 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: That's not in-character.
[5:12 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Oh, yeah, Donkey Kong apparently can turn Super.
[5:12 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: I think the Saturday Night Live skit is better.

Ludwig hates those boots, especially since he has been under them before. Ludwig watched the Direct live immediately before what actually got published on March 9, but he purposefully procrastinated to publish this at the very end of MAR10 out of disrespect for the day. Ludwig's reactions, limited as they were, are apparently unpopular things to think. What did YOU think? Share in the comments section.

Here is that Saturday Night Live skit referenced at the end.
MAR10 Day 2022 featured more discussion on LEGO and Ludwig.
There was a commercial about the brothers’ plumbing business that preceded this trailer. Ludwig wasn't a fan of the prices.

  1. Shigeru Miyamoto wants Mario fans to be literal bootlickers?

    1. Yes, or at least literal bootsniffers? https://twitter.com/Star_Wyse/status/1634214157712080903

  2. I thought the boots thing was weird too, but I put it more down to the Japanese being Japanese in some way I'm not fully educated on. Having us be literal bootlickers, as SG pointed out, is a legitimately creepy thought to me though.

The thing with the Spinies I put down to it being down to the movie being a depiction of Bowser's earliest known years of conquest--it's my understanding of the games at least that he wasn't always the noble leader to his men that he is now, and in fairness, has been for longer than he *perhaps* wasn't at this point?

    1. I don't see it as a Japan thing, since they teamed up with an American shoe company (Red Wing Shoes) to promote the American-animated movie (Illumination) by displaying the boots in an American storefront (Nintendo NYC). Very weird.

As for the Spinies, even the freaking Super Mario Bros. Super Show portrays this exchange with King Koopa and Lakitu:

King Koopa: Nice work, Lakitu! Now I know why you're the boss of the clouds!
      Lakitu: Thank you your Koopaness.
King Koopa: And those Pasta Landers are gonna find out I'm the boss of everything! Serve them the Spiny Eggs!

So even in that portrayal of SMB and SMB2 featuring Brooklyn (which the SMB Movie acknowledges is a major inspiration, given that SMB Plumbing commercial), Lord Bowser is being a noble leader and complimenting his subordinate Lakitu while being fully aware of what Spinies are.
