KoopaTV's Live Reactions to Nintendo Treehouse: Live | July 2020

By LUDWIG VON KOOPA - Are they acting like they normally do this?

We haven't seen a Nintendo Treehouse: Live since E3 2019, and that one was an error. With E3 2020 cancelled and us getting a FakE3 2020 instead (but with no Nintendo presence), I suppose this event is the closest we're gonna get.

Nintendo of America is going to show us some gameplay of Paper Mario: The Origami King, as well as “a first reveal and gameplay for a title in a franchise new to developer WayForward”, which doesn't appear to have anything to do with the main event. (Spoilers: It's called Bakugan: Champions of Vestroia.)

By the way, I'm the main KoopaTV staffer here reacting, because I'm kind of the only one looking forward to Paper Mario: The Origami King. Hmph. Few others wanted to show up. Check out the replay below and follow along with our log:

[1:00 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: RATING PENDING TO EVERYONE

[1:00 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Alright if this goes over an hour I gotta leave.

[1:00 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: "our first time doing this remotely"

[1:00 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Also first time you're doing it in July. (I think.)

[1:01 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: wait wtf

[1:01 PM] HeavyLobster: Is it bad that I kind of don't care about another Paper Mario with no exp?

[1:01 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Ethan has the same Oriental screen in back of him that I have in back of me.

[1:01 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Yes.

[1:02 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Plumber starting with 50 HP.

[1:02 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: I wanna know if any of the Treehousers are gonna laugh at their own jokes.

[1:02 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Princess Peach's Castle's basement is a scary place.

[1:03 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Lord Bowser is there too, as well as various Koopas.

[1:03 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: It's the same stairs to the roof that's before the final boss of Paper Mario 64.

Paper Mario 64 The Origami King Peach's Castle spiral staircase tower going to roof
Top: Peach's Castle spiral staircase going to the roof from Paper Mario: The Origami King.
Bottom: Peach's Castle spiral staircase going to the roof from Paper Mario.
Don't tell me Intelligent Systems has no reference to earlier games. Same infrastructure. No accident.

[1:03 PM] HeavyLobster: Oh, boy.. More paper puns...

[1:05 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Uh.... Mario is crushing flowers to obtain confetti scraps to fill in overworld holes.

[1:05 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: And many coins pop up as a result.

aka same mechanic as painting in Color Splash

[1:05 PM] HeavyLobster: That'll please the fanbase.

[1:06 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: That was the best part of the gameplay in Color Splash; the paint filling.

[1:06 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: The Confetti metre is a colour-coded bag in the upper left corner.

[1:07 PM] HeavyLobster: I think I care more about watching Arlo bitch about this game not being TTYD than I do about the actual game.

[1:07 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Pft, I already got this PRE-ORDERED.

[1:08 PM] HeavyLobster: Switch has so many actual good RPGs, why should I care about half-baked crap with a Mario logo slapped on?

[1:08 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: How many times do I gotta tell you it's not an RPG? <.<

[1:09 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: HOLY SHELL STONES

Paper Mario The Origami King holy Shell Stones Koopa Troopas
I want to know much more about the holy Shell Stones. They seem relevant to my own existence.

[1:09 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Different battle music.

[1:09 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Miniboss?

[1:10 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: 10 coins per second of added battle time.

[1:10 PM] HeavyLobster: Doesn't seem particularly interesting as an action game either.

[1:10 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: And spend a bunch of coins to bribe Toads in the audience to...do things.

[1:10 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Including healing and damaging enemies.

[1:11 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: The Toads you rescue in the overworld are part of the audience, and they also contribute funny dialogue.

[1:11 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: So that's incentive and integration between overworld exploration and the battle system, which was otherwise missing with Sticker Star and Color Splash.

[1:12 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Mario turning into an ARMS character requires motion control.

[1:12 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Toad Town has an accessory shop you can also spend coins on.

[1:13 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: They're giving away a LOT of coins for this in the overworld though.

[1:13 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Accessories have all kinds of battle effects.

[1:14 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Mario just hammered a butterfly, that is actually an angry Toad.

[1:14 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Treehousers endorse avoiding enemies in the overworld to not battle.

[1:15 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Scary Origami dog, which is actually... a Toad that owns the Battle Lab in the museum.

[1:15 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: (Museum is a very important part of Sticker Star/Color Splash)

[1:16 PM] HeavyLobster: Everything is a Toad.

[1:16 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: There are also "collectible treasures"

[1:16 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: That appear in the museum.

[1:17 PM] HeavyLobster: World and exploration actually look nice enough.

[1:18 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: You can notice the Toads in the audience are a lot more populated.

[1:18 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Awkward Treehouse interaction.

"You don't need to solve the ring puzzle in order to move on"

[1:19 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: There's an origami Mecha Koopa in this.

[1:19 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: It did the first damage to Mario for the first time in this stream.

[1:20 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: There's a Monty Mole in the overworld selling a Shell Stone, being called a Miracle Orb.

[1:21 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Well this is one way for them to make you get rid of your excess of coins.

[1:21 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Monty Mole is making you go from 10000 to 5000 to 3000 to 2000 to 1000.

[1:22 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: They're cutting away to go to a boss battle scene.

[1:22 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: "The environments are connected organically"

[1:23 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: As opposed to an overworld map.

[1:23 PM] HeavyLobster: Is this gonna be another one of those overly easy games?

[1:23 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: You could play a hard mode by not solving the puzzles.

[1:23 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Colored pencil missiles.

[1:24 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Colored Pencils have their own name that's too long to repeat here.

Paper Mario The Origami King Missile Maestro Colored Pencils boss introduction
Upon watching the recording again, it's...
Jean-Pierre Colored Pencils the 12th, of the Legion of Stationery. Its dialogue is in multiple colours.

[1:25 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Less cool than my Ludsub missiles though.

[1:27 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Hm...

[1:28 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: They summoned Toads that didn't do anything besides heal you, as well as gave a hint.

[1:28 PM] HeavyLobster: Ponspectors > Toads

[1:29 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: The Colored Pencils are chumps. <.<

[1:30 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: You kinda have to try to get hit by the missiles.

[1:31 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Colored Pencils got 1/4 or 1/5 HP and have a "gatling gun attack".

[1:31 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Treehouse says they're gonna stop.

[1:31 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: They don't wanna spoil how it ends.

[1:33 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: But they'll show the trailer again and then WayForward's game.

[1:34 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Honestly I think playing the game will be a lot more interesting than watching it.

[1:34 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Like, it didn't come across as amazing or anything, but I'm not discouraged...!

[1:35 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: "Stay Tuned!" C'mon I'm on a timer here.

[1:35 PM] HeavyLobster: I know what I'll be doing next Friday.

[1:36 PM] HeavyLobster: Probably playing Melee netplay, because the netcode is better than Ultimate's.

[1:36 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: ...oof.

[1:38 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: THEY'RE BACK

[1:38 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Short video, first reveal.

[1:39 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: "THE ULTIMATE BAKUGAN BRAWL"

[1:39 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: I've heard of "Bakugan" before

[1:39 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: But I don't know what it is.

[1:39 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: November 3, 2020.

[1:40 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Warner Bros. is publishing.

[1:40 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: This looks like Pokémon Sword/Shield.

[1:40 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: "epic action roleplaying game" based on a hit TV series.

[1:40 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: (See this is an RPG)

[1:40 PM] HeavyLobster: Think they're monsters that transform into balls or something.

[1:40 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Most of this has been loading screens so far.

[1:41 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: OVER 100 QUESTS

[1:41 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: COLLECT 80 BAKUGAN

[1:41 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: BECOME CHAMPIONS

[1:41 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: "Actually it's 81"

[1:41 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: "We've listened to our fans and we're bringing back Leonidas"

[1:41 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: who

[1:41 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: This guy isn't good at reading off a script.

[1:43 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: "Bakugan Champions of Vestroia" is how you spell it.

[1:43 PM] HeavyLobster: Tfw Arlo and Chuggaa are joking about how Nintendo doesn't want to acknowledge the older Paper Mario games on Twitter.

[1:44 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: They're talking nonsense about energy cores and resource management and strategy.

Bakugan Champions of Vestroia Dragonoid Pegatrix Brawl
Uh... Nice shading, I guess?

[1:44 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Alright I thought the game froze at the white screen.

[1:45 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: wtf is this game titled

[1:45 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: The box art said "Vestroia" but the Treehouse Live graphic overlay said Vestoria
Nintendo Treehouse Lvie July 2020 Bakugan Champions of Vestoria Vestroia WayForward
It should be called Bakugan: Champions of Vestroia. Nintendo Treehouse made a consistently bad typo, writing Vestoria.

[1:46 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Abnormal earthquake activities make up the backstory.

[1:46 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: There is this guy named Larry you gotta fetch quest for by the lake.
Ace Attorney reference?

Bakugan Champions of Vestroia Larry fetch quest more stuff
So, yeah, this is nothing like Larry Butz.
Well, actually, the hairstyle... nah.

[1:47 PM] HeavyLobster: Nintendo telling people to not expect the project to be first party won't stop the buttmad over this though.

[1:47 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: The Twitch stream has gone from 15000 high to 10000.

[1:48 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: They keep making Bakugan TV show references.

[1:48 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Which I don't get.

But maybe people wouldn't like Paper Mario: The Origami King if they weren't familiar with that world.

[1:48 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: (Or maybe they'd like it more because they'd stop comparing it to The Thousand-Year Door)

[1:51 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: There is a beeping car

[1:51 PM] HeavyLobster: Nintendo has to clarify with every announcement they make that they're not secret Nintendo Directs and Nintendo fans completely ignore that.

[1:51 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: and I dunno if it's from the game or one of the employees.

[1:52 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: These Bakugan are palette swaps.

[1:53 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: (They're both Cyndeous)

Bakugan Champions of Vestroia Cyndeous Dragonoid team view screen
From left to right: Cyndeous, Dragonoid, Cyndeous.

[1:53 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: (So I guess it's like having a Pokémon and a Shiny Pokémon of the same species)

[1:53 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: They have "online Brawl"

[1:53 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: which aren't good words to put together.

[1:54 PM] HeavyLobster: Yeah.

[1:54 PM] HeavyLobster: I still have flashbacks from Brawl's online.

[1:57 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Alright, I gotta leave soon.

[1:57 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Like half of the Twitch stream has. >.>

[1:57 PM] HeavyLobster: I don't actually care about Bakugan. Feel free to close it.

[1:58 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Alright they're ending it too.

[1:59 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: "Thank you for letting us be on Treehouse"

[1:59 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Well, that's it.

[1:59 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Uh...

[1:59 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: "Stay safe, bye everyone."

[1:59 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: "Thanks for Watching!"

[1:59 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Thanks for reading this live reaction log... I guess.

So... what did you think of the log? What did you think of Paper Mario: The Origami King and Bakugan: Champions of Vestroia? Would you prefer it to be spelled Vestoria? ...You're not... totally disappointed, are you?

Paper Mario: The Origami King released a week later!
And right after that, Nintendo has a Nintendo Direct Mini showcasing third parties. It's less painful than half an hour of Bakugan.

  1. This was...INCREDIBLY tone-deaf. Like, EXP isn't just some feature in JRPGs from the old days, it's become ubiquitous. Why do they keep insisting on building a car with no wheels? Will it be better than Color Splash though? I think it probably will. I'll have good fun with it, sure. It'll probably even be a genuinely good game.

But man ALIVE I just don't UNDERSTAND this insistence of reinventing the wheel! What do they think they're doing? And I do not know nor have I ever known ANYONE who gives anything resembling a crap about Bakugan. I certainly don't.

    1. If you want an RPG with experience points, play Bakugan!

Paper Mario The Origami King is an action adventure!

    2. Um. Actually when I do get in that mood I have Bravely Second and the entire Golden Sun trilogy in my queue. And if I want an action adventure...?

Four words: Breath. Of. The. Wild. An ACTUALLY amazing game. Seems like pretty soon Zelda will be the only series I have left to look forward to new games of...

    3. Sticker Star is roughly comparable to Breath of the Wild in concept, and I'd say in quality of execution, too!

That was an article I was supposed to write years ago but never got around to.

    4. Um. BOTW >>>>>>> Sticker Star > Paper Jam. But getting back on-topic, after seeing a few other things, I've decided to try and approach Origami King as an Action/PUZZLE game. They seem very emphatic about the puzzles.

    5. The only reason I haven't wrote that article is because I came up with the idea in early 2018 after playing through BotW, but I didn't want to ever replay Sticker Star again to confirm my remembrances.

As for it being a puzzle game, I think the puzzling is only in the battle system, but, yeah, go ahead.

    6. ...Logically speaking, surely your stating "I didn't want to ever replay Sticker Star again" supports my assertion that BOTW > Sticker Star yes? :P

    7. By comparison, I've let someone "borrow" Breath of the Wild and I don't plan on asking for it back.

    8. That's still a passive dislike of a game vs. the ACTIVE dislike of Sticker Star.

    9. Passive aggressive behaviour is still aggressive. >.>

It's not like I've taken my copy of Sticker Star and obliterated it. I still have it.

  2. I'd give my thoughts, but I think HeavyLobster covered all the main points in the log already, aside from how much I hate that there are stationary supplies as bosses.

    1. Jean-Pierre Colored Pencils the 12th is more compelling than whatever a smorg is.

    2. If there's hope in Origami King's bosses, it lies in mid "chapter" bosses, and King Olly themselves. Lest we forget, they've shown a boss that did NOT appear to be guarding a ribbon that was a FREAKING ORIGAMI DRAGON!

    3. You just got narrow-minded cultural assumptions that place DRAGONS above COLOURED PENCIL MISSILES.

It's that kind of thinking that makes people like Charizard more than Vanilluxe.
