Donkey Kong Country for Nintendo Switch Online... isn't enough...

By LUDWIG VON KOOPA - Remember when you were happy with what you had?

I wasn't going to write an article about this—and if I was, I was going to wait until next week—but Nintendo put out a whole press release and everything today so I suppose I'm obligated to cover it. Starting next week, you'll be able to play Donkey Kong Country with your Nintendo Switch Online subscription, on top of Natsume Championship Wrestling and The Immortal. As you may expect, Nintendo's focus is on Donkey Kong Country.

My first reaction to hearing about this? “Alright now everyone can move on to begging for EarthBound, I guess.” ‘cause that's what everyone does on all of Nintendo's videos in the comments section. Take a look at this screenshot of the top comments from February 2020's update:

The top comments endorse pirating and begging for EarthBound and maybe Donkey Kong Country...

And guess what happens when people receive Donkey Kong Country?

They want EarthBound, still. And several other games.
One guy claims he'll never ask for anything else if they provide Donkey Kong Country 2 and Donkey Kong Country 3. Don't believe him.

Notice how they're not even saying thank you.

Here's the reality. If you have a Wii U or Nintendo 3DS, you can get EarthBound, Donkey Kong Country 2, and Donkey Kong Country 3 for $8 each... right now! Sure, maybe you don't have a Wii U since lots of people missed out on that (but we were part of the “Go Get EarthBound on the Wii U.” crowd when that happened), but you probably have a 3DS. Or, if you've been begging Nintendo for literally years for this, you'd had the resources to get one. Actually, we did the same thing when the Donkey Kong Country games came out, too.

These have already been available, for years, on modern hardware. Stop making a mess of every comments section. ...Well, you're free to be an idiot on KoopaTV's.

By the way, are you playing the games you already have? Have you cleared through the first set of SNES games included with Nintendo Switch Online that included Kirby Super Star? Have you cleared through every case of Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy, given the knowledge that most people who have that excellent compilation haven't? Before begging for more, appreciate what you already have. Otherwise, you won't have the time for it. Also, have you read every article on KoopaTV? That's free entertainment and that'll take you months (?) to get through.

Two months later, Donkey Kong Country 2 is now available. Spoiler alert: People still want even more.
Nintendo has released all three Donkey Kong Country games on Nintendo Switch Online and is marketing the service as having the trilogy.

  1. I chalk it up to the general sentiment that the Switch's "collections" are a bloody joke compared to the Virtual Consoles we had before.

    1. Well, these are coming for freeeeeee (assuming you're not getting NSO for this purpose).

Again, if you reaaally wanna play EarthBound, it's available on modern hardware. We begged and begged for decades for that. Why refight it?

    2. I mean. You *are* required to have NSO to play the collections, so.

    3. Well, you're either paying $20 for emulations and get online access for free, or you're paying $20 for online access and getting emulations for free, or some combination of that.

    4. Well, I play the emulations *and* Mario Maker 2 so I'm paying for both.

    5. What you're getting is quite a good value for what you're paying!

    6. Of course it is. If it wasn't, I wouldn't be paying it. :P

    7. I mean, Kody B. has been getting it for free off me for almost two years now!

  2. BTW EarthBound is overrated, almost as much as Super Mario RPG.

    1. Lot7S is UNDER-rated if anything.

    2. But I agree insofar as Mother 3 is far superior to Earthbound.

    3. Nope, not with all of those rabid Geno fans out there.

Back before SMRPG was released on the Wii Virtual Console on that fateful Labor Day (so mid-2000s), everyone was big into Paper Mario and Paper Mario The Thousand-Year Door and Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga.

But a few people always claimed that SMRPG: Lot7S was really the best one, citing how cool Geno is and saying it had the best music (always Forest Maze) or whatever. But all of that hype was unwarranted.

    4. Perhaps it WAS overrated at that point in time, but lately the Geno fervor has been replaced by other, different rabid fan things. SMRPG still stands the test of time, but nobody talks about it anymore, hence underrated.

The mid-2000s was like 15 years ago, man.

    6. I mean...you're talking GameFAQs forum users. That's about as "nobody" as you can get without actually not existing. :P

  3. If Earthbound were to appear on the service tonight, people would still find something to complain about even if it's completely unrelated. "When's the next Nintendo Direct?" "Who's the next Smash fighter? It's going to be Phoenix, right?" "Why not remake the Thousand Year Door instead of Sticker Star 3?"

    1. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH that's all so true and what they say.

(Except the Phoenix Wright support is mostly from here.)
