(Boss 5-Final) Trayvon Tyson's Punch-Out!! Strategy Guide!

By LUDWIG VON KOOPA - IT'S THE FINAL BOSS.

It's part of Punch-Out!! culture to sit around on the playground exchanging tips to progress further in the game. Because I'm the kid everyone on the playground wants to be around, I'm taking it upon myself to be the definitive source for all things Trayvon Tyson's Punch-Out!!. So there are five bosses in the game, and I'm going to tell you all how to succeed against them. I'll only detail their moves — I don't want to spoil the entire experience for you!

This article contains massive spoilers.

BOSS 5: MAD KING SHARPNARD

Round 1 HP: 99
Round 2 HP: 86
Round 3 HP: 75
Round 4 HP: 99

One thing to keep in mind about Mad King Sharpnard: The first fight you have with him is a hopeless battle. He has undodgeable attacks and you can't damage him. He's invincible.

The fastest way to get through this is to stand still, of course.

The only way to beat him (or do damage to him at all) is with the Star Punch, a last-minute mechanic (foreshadowed throughout the story, though) that Mac uses with the 's' key.

"Punch his face!"

When Sharpnard's face looks like the above (with or without the fire, as I'll explain momentarily), Mac should use an upper-punch of either direction to obtain a star.

When you have a star (see left side of the screen), you can use the Star Punch!

Mac can hold up to 3 stars, just like the real Punch-Out!!. More stars means more damage. When Sharpnard is hit by a Star Punch, he'll become dizzy. The length of his dizziness also depends on how many stars you have when you Star Punch. So it's always better to save up on your stars, because the combined output of one 3-star Star Punch is greater than three 1-star Star Punches. The Star Punch also cancels out any animations/attacks that Sharpnard will use, so it can be a defensive measure as well.

When he's stunned, you can use your normal punches!

Let's talk about moves now. Note that the moves Sharpnard used in the first fight with him are all slightly altered in the actual fight with him (to make them dodgeable).

"Gurgurant Slash".

Cues: Sharpnard shows the Star Punch face (open mouth) and yells "Huaaaaah!" and flies off-screen with sword in hand.
Damage: Mac will be hurt for 14 damage if Sharpnard touches him: It makes no difference whether the sword slashes him or Sharpnard body checks him.
Description: Sharpnard, holding Gurgurant, flies off to the right side of the screen from his neutral position for 1 second, and then takes .5 seconds to horizontally glide left (after lowering his sword's angle slightly) — straight to Mac. Sharpnard then flies up and left, continuing his momentum. He then goes back to his neutral position, raising his sword up.
Round: 1 and 2.
Evasion: Mac should dodge left when Sharpnard is charging straight towards him, as seen in the above screenshot. Even though it looks like Mac will get hit, he's fine.

"Right Swipe".

Cues: Sharpnard shows the Star Punch face (open mouth) and says, "Take this!". He also goes to the upper-left side of the screen. When he swipes at you, a swooshing sound-effect plays.
Damage: Sharpnard's swipe will deal 9 damage to Mac.
Description: Sharpnard glides to the upper-left side of the screen for one second, says his phrase, and rotates himself quickly (.1 seconds total) so his hand from his right side (from Mac's point-of-view) slaps Mac. Sharpnard then returns to his neutral position.
Round: 1 and 2.
Evasion: Mac should dodge to the right when Sharpnard ceases saying "this" in "Take This!". Of course, as usual, the later the better. If Mac dodges as Sharpnard rotates, he'll clear the attack. He has to dodge right.

"Firebreathing".

Cues: Sharpnard shows the Star Punch face — but with fire in his open mouth this time (see the screenshot way above). This face is only a cue for this attack. A sound effect plays that sounds like Sharpnard has a lot of fire management problems.
Damage: If Mac gets scorched, he'll get hit for 15 damage!
Description: After Sharpnard opens his mouth, the sound effect plays and Sharpnard actually launches the fire .4 seconds into it. The fire lingers for .3 seconds and then dissipates as Sharpnard turns back to normal.
Round: 1 and 2.
Evasion: Mac can dodge to the left or to the right. The best time to dodge is the time period between when Sharpnard closes his mouth and when the fire actually comes out. That's the .4 second time period.

"Gurgurant Beam".

Cues: Sharpnard glides to the top right of the screen with no faces.
Damage: The sword beam will deal 6 damage to Mac.
Description: Sharpnard glides to the top right of the screen with his sword, and then points his sword downward to Mac to unleash the sword beam. While the sword beam is flying to Mac, Sharpnard will remain at this part of the screen. The beam will leave a yellow trail and kind of looks like a rocket. It will glide from its spawn point (Sharpnard's sword) towards Mac for .7 seconds. It'll also make a funny-sounding noise. At the conclusion of the beam, Sharpnard will glide back to his neutral position.
Round: 1 and 2.
Evasion: Mac can dodge to the left or to the right. He can dodge as soon as when the funny noise starts, or a bit later. The beam won't register damage until the poop-coloured part seen in the screenshot above (between the yellow trail and the green stuff) reaches Mac's head.

Just as a note, whenever Sharpnard opens his mouth and you punch his face at that point, it cancels the rest of his attack. So staying on the offense also counts as an "Evasion" technique. Anyway, the next four attacks are all under Sharpnard's "Minion Throw", and in Round 2, all come after one of his aforementioned attacks in his fight pattern.

"Minion Throw" (Chad).

Cues: Sharpnard glides to the top right of the screen with no faces. Chad pops out of Sharpnard's hand.
Damage: Chad's punch will do 6 damage to Mac if it hits.
Description: Chad says his "I watch TV and play PlayStation 3" quote and then moves around the screen in his typical Chad fashion. He first glides to the left side of the screen for .5 seconds, and then in .25 seconds glides to the right side of the screen. He takes .1 seconds to go straight up, .3 seconds to come down and left a bit (still above Mac), .2 seconds to go up straight above Mac, and then .4 seconds to move straight down to Mac. Once he finishes, he'll disappear and Mad King Sharpnard will come back from the top right of the screen to his neutral position — and with his mouth open.
Round: 2 and 3.
Evasion: Mac must dodge to the left. He should do so when Chad is done with his moving shenanigans and finally moves down to punch Mac. Incidentally, this is around when Chad finishes his quote.

"Minion Throw" (Trayvon).

Cues: Sharpnard glides to the top right of the screen with no faces. Trayvon pops out of Sharpnard's hand.
Damage: Trayvon will do 8 damage to Mac if he connects his attack.
Description: Trayvon's Concrete Smash attack returns from the previous fight. He'll say his "Creepy Ass Cracka" line, wait a second after starting, and then glide for a second towards Mac. Once he finishes, he'll disappear and Mad King Sharpnard will come back from the top right of the screen to his neutral position — and with his mouth open.
Round: 2 and 3.
Evasion: Just like before, Mac can dodge in any direction and also block to duck below the concrete.

"Minion Throw" (Jeantel).

Cues: Sharpnard glides to the top right of the screen with no faces. Jeantel pops out of Sharpnard's hand and does her disgusting constipated noise.
Damage: A flattened Mac will suffer 11 damage.
Description: Like Trayvon, Jeantel uses a move from her own fight: The Body Roll. Jeantel will wait a second before doing anything, and then takes an agonizing 3 seconds to roll over to Mac. Once she finishes, she'll disappear and Mad King Sharpnard will come back from the top right of the screen to his neutral position — and with his mouth open.
Round: 2 and 3.
Evasion: Just like before, Mac must block at the proper time to step backwards and avoid Jeantel's scary roll. Around the time in the above screenshot is great: Right when Jeantel is ready to squish Mac.

"Minion Throw" (Go).

Cues: Sharpnard glides to the top right of the screen with no faces. Go pops out of Sharpnard's hand.
Damage: Go can't actually hurt Mac, so 0 damage.
Description: Go is flung to the left side of the screen from Sharpnard for 2 seconds with his "Gowoahwoahwoaaaaah" quote, and then bounces off to fly to the opposite side of the screen for 1 second. Go will bounce off this right side straight down, as seen in the above screenshot. Sharpnard will chastise Go for his uselessness. Once he finishes, Go will disappear and Mad King Sharpnard will come back from the top right of the screen to his neutral position — and with his mouth open.
Round: 2 and 3.
Evasion: Mac just has to stand there and get ready to punch Sharpnard's face once he comes back for a star.

"Gurgurant SMASH".

Cues: Sharpnard may or may not open his mouth (50-50 chance) and snarls at you. He now reveals he has TWO Gurgurant swords and holds both of them out. Sharpnard generates an electric current between the two swords, which electrifies the swords and also his head, creating a Bzzzt sound.
Damage: 8 damage per hit (Sharpnard can hit you twice).
Description: After Sharpnard electrifies his swords (a 2.1 second process), Sharpnard will glide for 1 second to the top right of the screen, holding his left sword down to swipe at Mac. Sharpnard will then glide to the right (off-screen) for his second attack (in .6 seconds). He'll take .7 seconds to rush towards Mac with his right sword pointed downward. After passing by Mac, he'll take .3 seconds to compose himself at the left side of the screen and say "Get me off the set, I'm tired!" Sharpnard will then slowly (2 seconds) glide back to his neutral position, ending the attack with his mouth open.

His first hit.

Sharpnard's second hit (he's moving to the left).

Round: 3.
Evasion: Mac needs to duck (block) or dodge to the right for Sharpnard's first hit, and then can block, dodge to the left, or dodge to the right for Sharpnard's second swipe. Blocking is recommended both times. Of course, Mac should make his evasive maneuvers not too early and of course not too late. If Sharpnard DOES open his mouth at the beginning, punching it will cancel this entire attack.

"Dead Man's Volley".

Cues: Sharpnard gets up after being knocked down 3 times, defying the TKO rule of Punch-Out!!, and asks if you're surprised. He then flies to the top right of the screen with his sword out.
Damage: The energy blast will do 8 damage to Mac, unless he's blocking while it contacts him. Then it'll only do 1 damage.
Description: Once Sharpnard flies to the top right of the screen, he'll launch the energy blast. He'll also give Mac a star because of the sheer power of the attack. The energy blast will first glide 3.1 seconds to the center of the screen where Mac should hit it. Once Mac hits the energy blast, it will shrink a little bit and be returned to Sharpnard's sword. Sharpnard will slash the blast back to Mac, and the process will be continued. Every time Sharpnard returns the blast, it will be .5 seconds faster (as in, take 2.6 seconds to glide, and then 2.1, 1.6, 1.1, and then .6). Once it reaches that .6 seconds stage, the blast will be returned to Sharpnard and not his sword, where it will electrocute and defeat the Mad King. If Mac misses his opportunity to Star Punch the blast (it waits at the center of the screen for .3 seconds), the blast will home in on Little Mac and inevitably hit him.
Round: 4. Yes, 4.
Evasion: Mac must Star Punch the energy blast 6 times. If he misses the Star Punch, he has no choice but to try to minimize his damage by blocking and then trying again. He gets one Star Punch per serve/return combination.

Returning the energy blast with the Star Punch.

When the blast is this small, Mac only needs to Star Punch one more time to win.

Congratulations. You've finished the game! ...Or, at least you've read the guide for how to. But the game isn't over: There's the epilogue and credits to click through. And the game's ending? Brilliant.

Thank you for sticking with me. I hope you enjoyed Trayvon Tyson's Punch-Out!!. KoopaTV's promotion of the game won't end here, of course. But this ought to be the last gameplay-related article on it, since there are no more bosses.
