By LUDWIG VON KOOPA - The brothers are out of a job.When you really think about it, how can Iwata ask Sakurai to make a sequel to Super Smash Bros. 4 in the future? Look at Nintendo's line-up of games going on. It's all Mario this, Mario that. That plumber is raking in the inflated coins while the rest of the Nintendo cast is out in the cold. There won't be any new F-Zero. Nintendo's new franchise ideas end up bombing. So with a series all about fanservice, how can the fans be serviced if Nintendo franchises are basically becoming discontinued?
"Oh, that's okay." You might declare. "We'll just call them all retro now." How many "retro" characters can you have before you realize, "Well, where are all the new characters?"
I guess the good news is that Super Smash Bros. 4 already has more new characters from 2000s franchises than Super Smash Bros. Brawl did. Maybe it's not a fair comparison, since Toon Link is technically 2000s, along with Ike (Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance) and Lucas (Mother 3). And Lucario too, I guess. Count on Smash 4 having a Gen 5 or 6 Pokémon, though, along with a 2000s-on Fire Emblem representative. Likely from Fire Emblem: Awakening but we know I want that slot to be taken by Micaiah from the Wii's Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn.
I've always said Brawl's theme is very retro, from the character choices like Pit to all the new retro (...oxymoron?) stages like 75M. So maybe it's a stylistic excuse. Or maybe the stylistic excuse is because Nintendo's current franchises are being discontinued and new ones are doing terribly or not existing. (I'd be fine with some Chibi Robo representation.) Consider Super Smash Bros. to be a barometer of Nintendo's current state.
"But Ludwig! There are tons of characters to pick! There's no worry at all! Look at all the requests on Miiverse!"
Do you REALLY want characters like Takamaru, Geno, or PAC-MAN in?! That's what's being requested! Nintendo has a problem to deal with here, because I don't want trash like those characters!
