Why do people think Capcom should be allowed anywhere near Smash Bros.?

By RAWKHAWK2010 - Capcom Sucks.

I know people love Mega Man and wanna play as him in Super Smash Bros. 4, but I feel like people are far too quick to divorce the character from the terrible, terrible company that unfortunately still owns him.

Capcom Capcpom Typo Misspelling Copyright
Lo and behold, the company that can't even spell its own name.

With all the shitty decisions they've made in the past gen, do we really want such a high-profile release tainted by Capcom having control over even a little of it? It wouldn't surprise me in the least if Capcom hinted at the possibility of Mega Man being in, but would then go on to hold the game hostage and say the fans would have to pledge X amount of signatures or buy X amount of copies of X game before they'd allow it. (I mean, it's not like they haven't blackmailed their fans in those exact same ways before.)

And then even if Nintendo actually makes Mega Man's inclusion legally impervious to Capcom's insolence, we still have to worry about Smash 4's future Virtual Console status. A decade or two from now when legal stuff starts to expire, who knows if Capcom will even renew the fucking Mega Man license. I trust SEGA and Konami because they at least seem to value the well-beings of their respective most popular characters, but Capcom could end up selling Mega Man to EA for all we know and then, well...have fun renewing that.

The most excited I've seen Mega Man fans in the past half-decade was when they succeeded in getting the localization of that one mobile game canceled (lol), so maybe people want Mega Man in Smash to give these dudes a glimmer of hope in an otherwise sea of darkness. But is it really worth tainting the series for the rest of us...? Well, no, it's not. But I guess we’ll see soon enough.

Is Rawk the kind of dude you'd like to talk to, argue with, or plot the destruction of? Follow his account (RawkHawk2010) on Miiverse!

The concerns Rawk raised here about renewing Mega Man may be realized!

  1. Well, Rawk, first of all, "legal stuff" doesn't start to expire in a decade or two from now. Trademarks last indefinitely as long as Capcom is using Mega Man (I mean, that's still happening right?) and copyrights last for 75 years. Mega Man ain't even half that old.

Second, I doubt Capcom would sell Mega Man to a Western company.

Third, Mega Man fans were more excited about Mega Man 9 and 10.

And finally, Capcom won't be able to hold Smash 4 hostage. They aren't granted that type of power.
