Terapagos, Shell-ebration Pokémon Week, and Avalugg is a Turtle-like?

By LUDWIG VON KOOPA - Guess this is a several years-late correction.

The highlight of The Pokémon Company International's product plans in 2023, besides the Unova Sitting Cuties set available on the Pokémon Center website (featuring Bouffalant!), is Terapagos coming as paid Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet downloadable content called The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero, specifically Part 2: The Indigo Disk. Terapagos is a beautiful shelled creature filled with lots of colour that is likely very tied to the Terastallization phenomenon in Paldea. But not only is Terapagos a thing, but this smaller and mysterious unnamed (as of now) Pokémon is also a thing, and it is also very turtle-y, including being able to withdraw into its jewel-esque shell when it senses danger.

Right when TPCi announced the little guy, they also announced a “Pokémon Shell-ebration on Pokémon TV” and started posting gifs and photos on their Twitter account. The episodes involved Squirtle, Wartortle, and Blastoise (Here Comes the Squirtle Squad, The Pokémon Water War, Can't Beat the Heat, The Right Place and the Right Mime); Torkoal (All Torkoal, No Play); Turtwig, Grotle, and Torterra (Gettin' Twiggy With It, Aiding the Enemy, The Fleeing Tower of Sunyshore!); Tirtouga and Carracosta (A Restoration Confrontation! Part 1, A Restoration Confrontation! Part 2); Turtonator (A Fiery Training Camp Trick!); and Chewtle and Drednaw (The Climb to Be the Very Best!). TPCi also discussed Spe-shell turtle-like Pokémon Trading Card Game cards, which include most of the Pokémon I just listed, but also Shuckle. But it's not news that Shuckle should be in that group.

However, there is news on one Pokémon, which also results in a BIG KoopaTV article correction.

You see those gifs? Did you notice a certain Pokémon? It's Avalugg, the Iceberg Pokémon, originally found in the Kalos region. (Though Avalugg also has a Hisuian variant.) Now, I've thought quite a bit about Avalugg and even kind of like it. But I associate it with looking like a table, not a turtle. (Bergmite is a stool.) But... apparently Avalugg is a turtle-like Pokémon per The Pokémon Company International.

Back in 2016 when they announced Turtonator, I had a montage photo of Blastoise, Shuckle, Torkoal, Torterra, Carracosta, and Turtonator, which represented a turtle-like Pokémon from each of the then-seven generations... except Generation 6. In the image caption, I wrote, “The only generation not to contribute was Generation 6, which has some explaining to do.” It took almost six and a half years, but Generation 6's explanation is now, “We have Avalugg, and have had Avalugg the whole time!” (Generation 8 brought Chewtle and Drednaw, and Generation 9 is bringing Terapagos and the littler guy, so every generation has had turtle-esque representation.)

Guess that means I'll leave a note at the bottom of that article revealing Avalugg's true identity. That said... I'm not really seeing it. Like, Avalugg is clearly the odd one out here. And is Bergmite supposed to be turtle-like, too?

Did you know that Avalugg is supposed to be the Kalos turtle representative? What do you think of Terapagos? Or the smaller-looking Terapagos-related mysterious Pokémon? Ludwig plans to expand on some of those anime episodes in a later article next month for World Turtle Day. Will TPCi acknowledge World Turtle Day?

TPCi did not acknowledge World Turtle Day 2023, but KoopaTV sure did.

  1. I mean, I can at least KINDA see Avalugg being a turtle. Though it's much more news to me that so much info about S/V DLC is out, including a name for it, even!
