Memorial to the Official Pokémon DP Sound Library; we barely knew ye

By LUDWIG VON KOOPA - Well that was practically no time at all!

Some people claim not to have known about this, but at least KoopaTV readers should remember that The Pokémon Company approximately four months ago made the Pokémon DP Sound Library available for streaming and download for select uses—that's the soundtrack and sound effects from the DS releases of Pokémon Diamond Version and Pokémon Pearl Version. It's a good soundtrack and I like it a lot, and as I've noted in that article, I've used it (for non-select uses) in the past.

Pokémon DP Sound Library Challenge Playlist
Too bad we're not gonna have our hearts filled with courage anymore, because this playlist will cease to exist!

Since I published that, they also uploaded HYADAIN'S Gyarados! sampled song, and Matt Cab's sampled song Stay Shining!. I recognise HYADAIN as the guy who made those extremely popular Mega Man 2 vocal remixes back at the end of the 2000s (though Gyarados! doesn't compare to those)... I have no idea who Matt Cab is, nor do I particularly care for his work.

However, in a VERY undermarketed message left on the site (haven't seen one word about this on The Pokémon Company [International] social media or the main pokemon.com site, and I went looking), they're about to pull the plug VERY imminently. Read:

Announcement from Pokémon DP Sound Library
Thank you for visiting the Pokémon DP Sound Library.
We will be shutting down the service on May 31, 2022, at 9:00 a.m. UTC.
You will not be able to stream or download the sound data after this date.
As for the sound data downloaded already, you will be able to continue using it within the scope of the Terms of Use and Guidelines.
You can access this website to view the Terms of Use and Guidelines after the closure of Pokémon DP Sound Library.
Please make sure to follow the latest Terms of Use and Guidelines when using the sound data.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank you to everyone who has supported us since service launch.

Well, that's a bummer. No word on what they're going to do with this YouTube video version of the Sound Library. In my searching, there aren't any references to the Pokémon DP Sound Library in the Pokémon Support website, but there is a drop-down with it in the general support ticket form.

pokemon.com support request form Pokémon DP Sound Library issue
I just want to know how much longer this option will remain.

I didn't actually go ask any questions. (A good one might be, “Why is this being taken down?”) I kind of got distracted instead looking at the Pokémon Trading Card Game Live news. (That's their in-limited-beta-now-in-Canada-and-Mexico replacement of Pokémon Trading Card Game Online, which I'm permabanned from.) While I don't know if I'm banned from TCGL because it's not open yet, they did make a new forum for it that I'm NOT banned from....yet.

What's really different about the DP Sound Library closing is that it wasn't ever stated upfront that this would be up for a limited time. In fact, I noted in my original article that there didn't appear to be a time-limited duration. Well, now there is, and it's tomorrow morning. Good luck to you, and rest in peace to the DP Sound Library.

This wasn't what Ludwig was planning to publish for Memorial Day. If you're lucky, he'll publish that tomorrow instead. If you're unlucky, you might have to wait for Memorial Day 2023! He was listening to the DP Sound Library throughout the whole day... and by the end, to HYADAIN's Mega Man music. Do you think that there will be future sound libraries for other games in this series, or do you think this was considered a failed experiment and that's why it's going so soon?

KoopaTV's 2021 Memorial Day article was dedicated to Glenn Fraldarius.

  1. And so the site's been reduced to the announcement that it has closed. If you try to go to any of the old URLs, you get a 404 page referencing Luxio (the 404th Pokémon in the National Dex). It's still a dropdown in the submit a request support form.

  3. This would have been a smash hit in the early days of YouTube. Assuming there’s no copyright shenanigans going on, I mean what else would you use the sound effects for, the music and effects would have been int eh backgrounds of every YouTubers videos. For good reason it’s catchy music, and I’m sure the nostalgia that comes with it would send some kind of subliminal message to viewers. I mean I’m always happy when one of the songs from my favorite (or obscure) games pops up in a YouTuber video.

But anyway now that we’re past 2006 and this is dead as a doornail, it’s best to move onto better things. Arkanoid?

    1. It's not as dead as a doornail when the game was just remade...erm... really remastered... in 2021!
