Tencent and Nintendo Announce a New Pokémon Game

By OLI KANG - Finally, a MOBA for Pokémon fans!

Tencent, a multi-billion dollar Chinese conglomerate, has been partnering with successful gaming companies for years and is now planning a move with Nintendo. Tencent entered the console gaming sector by collaborating with PlatinumGames and Marvelous. This turned out to be a wise strategy as it helped Tencent create games based on popular game franchises.

On June 24th, 2020, Nintendo announced that it would partner with Tencent Holdings to create a new Pokémon game. The partnership is Tencent Holdings' latest attempt to enter the console market and consolidate its partnerships with Japanese firms. This new Pokémon game is a real-time, 5-on-5 multiplayer game (or MOBA to be exact) called Pokémon UNITE.

Pokémon UNITE Features

For the most part, Pokémon UNITE looks a lot like Tencent's other well-designed multiplayer games, especially League of Legends. The new game will have a familiar screen arrangement and will feature popular Pokémon characters. Pokémon UNITE will allow mobile and Nintendo Switch players to work with teammates to take down their opponents.

Nintendo and Tencent have confirmed that some of your favorite Pokémon such as Pikachu, Machamp, Snorlax, Charizard, Lucario, Gengar, Talonflame, Clefable, Venusaur, and Blastoise will be playable characters, although some will start as their respective pre-evolution forms. As with all MOBAs, more will become available as the development of the game continues.

Other Pokémon will also be present as wild ones where players would need to catch in order to level up and eventually evolve their Pokémon to more powerful ones, in addition to defeating enemy characters. The skills of these Pokémon will be displayed on the screen in a manner that is familiar to most Pokémon fans in an interface common to most mobile MOBA games.

Pokémon UNITE Release Date, Cost, and Compatible Platforms

The Pokémon website doesn't reveal Pokémon UNITE's release date, so fans will have to wait until late 2020 or early 2021. Pokémon UNITE is free-to-play, but players may have to spend money on micro-transactions. Nintendo plans to unveil Pokémon UNITE on Nintendo Switch, Android, and iOS.

Nintendo Shares Rise

Nintendo has always been very protective of its game characters. However, its decision to make a strategic deal with Tencent was received well by the stock market. The announcement came as Nintendo shares reached a 12-year high, with investors expecting the company to increase its console sales in China. The Kyoto-based company's shares rose by 5 percent on the morning of June 24th and ended the day at 48,720 JPY. Nintendo's recent success with their game Animal Crossing: New Horizons have contributed to the company's good fortune especially during the COVID-19 crisis where video game sales soar worldwide.

The two gaming heavyweights will benefit from the cooperation, with Tencent increasing its gaming portfolio and Nintendo bringing its products to China. Whether the Tencent-Nintendo partnership will result in better gaming experiences for fans remains to be seen.

  1. If the like to dislike ratio on the reveal video is anything to go by, I don't think too many people are excited for this game and that's putting it lightly. Anything that Tencet is involved in will elicit strong emotions. Chinese owned companies, such as TikTok, have been derided for both privacy and security issues and many fear it will only continue to get worse unless we pass an internet bill of rights.
