KoopaTV's Live Reactions to Nintendo Direct March 8, 2018!

By LUDWIG VON KOOPA - How long after this will social media be spamming for a new Direct?

Before we get to the reaction log, I want to address something. The past several months have been nothing but obnoxious Nintendo fans spamming every marketing material Nintendo has produced with “DIRECT WHEN?” or “Cool, but this isn't a Nintendo Direct.” It's annoying. You are getting continual news and great marketing content from Nintendo all the time (I can't prove this, but I think there's more Nintendo-produced content now than ever before per time period). You're complaining just to be annoying.

Of course, KoopaTV readers are intelligent folks, for the most part. I'm sure y'all ain't the same idiots constantly begging for a Nintendo Direct. I mean, if we had people like this on the site, the comments section for every article would just be people beginning for Episode 2 of KoopaTV Adventures. (Which is something that SHOULD be begged for.)

People were making up weird myths about historical patterns for when Nintendo Directs should be made available, as if Nintendo itself is a videogame boss doomed to doing the same attack patterns for eternity. They can do whatever they want.

ANYWAY, I'll get off my tangential soapbox so you can get to reading the soapbox you came here for.

Nintendo Direct March 8 2018 announcement
I keep forgetting Mario Tennis Aces existed.

I'm here to give you my live reactions. Vortexica is here as well. (He's the one you need to bother to get a new episode of KoopaTV Adventures.)

Watch along with us:

[5:33 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: More Splatoon?
[5:33 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Is this a Smash trailer

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo Switch Inklings trailer
Ludwig knew it was a Super Smash Bros. trailer almost immediately.

[5:33 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Inkling Girl bending down...
[5:33 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Sees the light
[5:33 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: SMASH
[5:33 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: AHH

[5:34 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: 2018
[5:34 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: ON NINTENDO SWITCH
[5:34 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: THAT'S IT
[5:34 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: THAT'S THE DIRECT
[5:34 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: THANK YOU FOR WATCHING
[5:34 PM] Vortex: What a way to close.
[5:35 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: WELL
[5:35 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: This makes up for, you know, Undertale.
[5:35 PM] Vortex: Yes.
[5:36 PM] Vortex: I'm... just letting this sink in.
[5:37 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: ............
[5:37 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: So...so...
[5:38 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: ....by the way, that was Breath of the Wild Link you saw.
[5:38 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: So Smash Switch is either a remake with new characters and costumes or a new game.
[5:38 PM] Vortex: I noticed.
[5:38 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: ...Former seems more likely given development times.
[5:38 PM] Vortex: I hope it's a new game.
[5:39 PM] Vortex: If it is a port, what're they gonna call it?
[5:39 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: (Can we point out that I knew it was a Smash trailer back when it was the two Inklings spraying ink at one another?)
[5:39 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Super Smash Bros. For Switch.
[5:39 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: As opposed to Super Smash Bros. For Wii U or 3DS.
[5:39 PM] Vortex: That makes it sound like a new game though.
[5:40 PM] Vortex: There's potential for confusion here.
[5:40 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Confusion means more sales!
[5:41 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Laughing that they headlined the Direct with, you know, Tennis.
[5:42 PM] Vortex: Ya. I think I briefly dozed off during the Tennis.
[5:43 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: BUT YOU'RE WIDE AWAKE NOW
[5:43 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: This crushed my low expectations for the Direct.
[5:43 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: So good job, Nintendo!
[5:43 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Any last thoughts?
[5:45 PM] Vortex: Erm, well. I enjoyed it. I saw games I definitely know I'm getting. Happy about Crash for one, wasn't expecting that. And yeah. I thought it was pretty good.
[5:46 PM] Vortex: Probably also helped by the fact that Undertale didn't outright offend me like it did you. I was more like, "meh".
[5:46 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: UGGH
[5:46 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: NOW I HAVE TO CHOOSE BETWEEN WHICH I HATE MORE.
[5:46 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Undertale or ARMS....?!

What is your opinion of that Nintendo Direct? Did it meet your expectations? ...If it didn't have that ONE LAST THING at the end, would it still meet your expectations? KoopaTV has a lot to digest from that over the coming days or weeks, so be sure to stick to KoopaTV! And your own thoughts can shape the narrative, too, so share them.

KoopaTV has had five reaction logs since the January Nintendo Direct Mini, which you can read here.
The last Nintendo Direct of real size was all the way back in September 2017.

The Special Episode of KoopaTV Adventures, while important, is analogous to a Nintendo Direct Mini.
Ludwig goes into the detailed evidence in the speculative debate over whether or not Super Smash Bros. for Switch is an enhanced port or a new game.

  1. Before I begin, where is Episode 2 of KoopaTV Adventures, Vortexica? With that now said, let me delve into my thoughts.

The 3ds still refuses to die although it is apparent that now more than ever less and less games are releasing on it. Since the majority of these games are ports, I cannot say that I am excited for any of them. I have already played the original Bowser's Inside Story on the DS and do not feel like buying it again. Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker was a charming game on the Wii U, but the new Odyssey stages for the 3DS and Switch are still not enough for me to warrant a second purchase. I have not played the original Luigi's Mansion, but I have watched a let's play of it and played the sequel so I'll probably pass on it as well. As far as the other titles go, I'm not really interested in them.

Moving on the Switch, we can see even further evidence that Nintendo is abandoning us Wii U owners. Besides the Captain Toad re-release previously mentioned, Super Smash Bros. is more than likely going to be an enhanced port with new characters, stages, and modes similar to how Splatoon 2 is to the original game. I could be wrong about this, but considering SSB for the Wii U finished adding DLC in late 2016, I just do not see how a new game built from the ground up could be finished by this year so soon. Next, I was happy to find out that my prediction of Marx appearing somewhere in Kirby: Star Allies was correct. I'm still very hyped about this game and there is only one more week to go. Mario Tennis Aces is shaping up to be a great game as well, but I'm not really interested in it. As for Hyrule Warriors, Undertale, Octopath Traveler, Okami, South Park, Dark Souls, and Little Nightmares, I could not really care less about them to be honest considering most are ports. Lastly, the highlight in the entire Direct for me was for sure the new Octo DLC for Splatoon 2. For the amount of content being offered, I don't really mind the cost too much. Since both Splatoon 1 and 2 have both received generous amounts of free content months past their launch dates, I can say that $20 is not too bad for all that we will get in return.

Overall, this was a solid Direct even if there were a ton of ports announced. If this is anything to go off of, I can only imagine how great this year's E3 presentation will be.

    1. After reading more news, it appears that the SSB game may be entirely new after all. It is said to be developed by HAL Laboratory instead of Bandai Namco who developed the previous two installments. This is quite unprecedented for Nintendo to announce a huge game such as this and release it within the same year. If there are no delays, then color me shocked.

    2. "It is said to be developed by HAL Laboratory instead of Bandai Namco who developed the previous two installments."
I'll get to your other comments soon, but for that one, I need a source.

All the Smash Bros. website says is that it's copyright Nintendo, and Nintendo and HAL developed Smash 64. No statement on who is developing Smash Switch.

I believe it's an enhanced port until we get further information.

    3. That's a HAL of a lie!

    4. Okay, that's it.

I was going to write today's article on Trump and his violent videogame round table.

GUESS I NEED TO WRITE IT ON THIS.

    5. Now the 3DS is supported into 2019, so its upcoming games list released in financial reports won't be empty for several quarters! New stuff keeps trickling in.
"New" isn't actually new, of course, though Nintendo will write that it's new.

I don't think we need any more evidence that Nintendo has abandoned the Wii U and its owners. I mean, making no more games or support for it is the definition of abandonment, ain't it?

Nintendo deserves more money from Splatoon activities. I mean, it's inevitable, right? The whole point of maintaining support after release is to get more money from your existing customers, not just give away more free stuff.
      We're seeing that now.

  2. It's strange. When I saw the final trailer, I already knew it was Smash from the animation.

Unlike others, I didn't scream, but rather reacted with stunned silence and amazement. Afterwards, I began worrying for Sakurai. The music sounded ominous, and much more terrifying since I was wearing headphones.

I bought (or tried to) the Octo Expansion as fast as I could. It may be me, but I think I saw Agent 3! The developers are continuing to support Splatoon 2 for a long time coming, and I'm really glad they are.

    1. I'm doubting that Sakurai is a human at this point.

Does this mean Agent 3 is, uh, canonically a female?

    2. Agent 3 was also in the Sunken Scroll for Marina's backstory.

    3. ...You're right, and with female hair.

  3. Bowser's Inside Story! Luigi's Mansion! Octopath Traveler! Octopath Traveler! That Dark Souls amiibo! Undertale! Crash Bandicoot! This Nintendo Direct was great for me.

I also think Smash is a new game, because why would they have such a tiny, mysterious teaser for a port?

Serious question: are the Splatoon story modes good enough to be worth it for someone who doesn't like a lot of multiplayer?

Second serious question: Should I try No More Heroes?

(I think I asked about NMH before, but now I've actually played a Suda51 game, so I'm more interested.)

    1. Here I'd think you'd want to repeat Octopath Traveler at least eight times.

I'll explain my thoughts on Smash's game status.

To your serious question: Not for $60. There isn't enough content to warrant that, but from the sound of it, this story mode DLC is bigger than the story modes of Splatoon and Splatoon 2 combined, and it's $20. Of course, as it says, the full version of the game is required to use the DLC.
One of the major lessons from that article about Callie and Marie and the Splatoon 2 story mode is how the single-player and multi-player elements of both games work together in tandem to give an experience, compared to how it works in a lot of other games where they are siloed and worked on independently or as filler. So your appreciation for the single-player won't be complete without also playing the multi-player.

Second serious question: Absolutely. Don't start with Travis Strikes Again, obviously. Start with the two games on the Wii.
