Deep Cut's Deep Roots (new interview with Shiver, Frye, and Big Man!)

By LUDWIG VON KOOPA - Backstory!

Yeah, it seems like there is a fairly substantial contingent of dedicated Big Man fans. But what do we really know about the Deep Cut crew representing the Splatlands in Splatoon 3? Story Mode didn't really go into as much detail about them as other idols, and their Anarchy Splatcast dialogue is quite limited compared to the newscasts in Splatoon and Splatoon 2 that developed those idols’ personalities. Now that Nintendo is able to recognise which idol is which, it's really time to make each one stand out and develop them.

One way to do that is to hold an interview with all of Deep Cut at once. It's fairly standard for music-based media outlets, like magazines, to try to snag interviews with a whole band, and that's what happened.

Unknown to the interviewer, the three of Shiver, Frye, and Big Man weren't all friends when growing up. They became more close in middle school—or Frye and Shiver, specifically. (This means that, whenever they were in middle school, described as a few years later, Inkling [Frye] and Octoling [Shiver] societies were already integrated.) Frye was a wild child into dancing and eels while Shiver tried to be the more responsible friend. They both loved music and singing, especially the Calamari Inkantation. They decided they wanted to develop that singing and get some music to accompany it, and they had heard Big Man was good with the piano and approached the manta ray. (Though he was scared of the Inkling and Octoling at first.)

Frye is still like she was in middle school—the wild, more impulsive one. She is also into Tableturf Battles, just like I am. Well, at least she's into collecting the cards. Which is quite difficult to do in Splatoon 3 since card packs aren't purchasable or given as reliable rewards. Perhaps that's why Frye likes to steal them from others.

As for Deep Cut's unique blended musical style, that came from Frye eating a dish called okonomiyaki, stacking different flavours of music like the flavour of that dish. (Which seems to be a grilled pancake with layered meat and vegetables (such as pickles), which is basically a hamburger without a top layer of pancake.) It took Big Man six weeks of effort to make that layered sound of three different schools of music sound coherent and good for their demo debut, which... doesn't seem all that unusual for a band trying to make it big and get noticed.

Frye had fourteen responses, as did Big Man. Shiver only had thirteen, though it felt like less—most of the interview seems like Frye, with Big Man playing a big part on how their music actually came to be. Shiver took a big backseat at that part, while Frye was talking throughout. Perhaps that is indicative of their personalities. Frye is the more extroverted one while Shiver and Big Man are more shy and introverted (though Big Man obviously has social anxiety on top of that)—also interesting, since Frye grew up without real friends (she doesn't consider her crew of eels to be real friends).

By the end, I didn't change my relative favouritism of the Deep Cut members of Frye > Shiver > Big Man. But what do you think? And despite my running summary, if you're interested in Splatoon lore, you should check out the interview for yourself.

Ludwig figured that since Frye mentioned her eels, that Shiver should mention Master Mega, her shark. But Shiver didn't really talk about herself or her shark at all! Which is more you can infer about her personality. Anyway, Ludwig plans to write about more Splatoon 3 by the end of this week, because there is a Splatfest to vote for and discuss coming up! And he is almost certainly going to take Frye's team in that. (Out of the strength of her position, not because it's Frye's team.) Stay tuned.

So, about that Splatfest coming up... it's about favourite chocolate, and Frye has the right choice.
Version 4.0.0 finally gave stage-specific dialogue to Deep Cut.
