TAG Heuer Mario Kart Chronographs VERSUS Nintendo eShop Try Before You Buy Sale

By LUDWIG VON KOOPA - Make the right choice with your money that you'd be proud of.

Today, two unexpected things happened in the Nintendo world. Number one, they are once again teaming with luxury watchmaker TAG Heuer for two Mario Kart themed “chronographs”...which are... very pricey-looking.

TAG HEUER X Mario Kart Formula 1 tourbillon chronograph 25,600 dollars watch
Two watches, I mean chronographs, the normal chronograph for $4,300 USD, and the tourbillon chronograph for $25,600.

I don't actually know what tourbillon means, or what most of the terms of their website mean. But according to TAG Heuer's online magazine,

“the TAG Heuer Formula 1 x Mario Kart Limited Edition Chronograph Tourbillon, is equipped with one of the most technically challenging mechanisms: the tourbillon. This high complication is usually the preserve of Haute Horlogerie, sometimes accompanied with six-figure pricing. However, TAG Heuer has brought tourbillon ownership within the financial grasp of many more people.”

It'd normally be six-figure pricing, but TAG Heuer will bring it to you for five figures! Now, let's talk about something way more affordable and won't make you feel like a dummy for after spending your money. (Oh, this reminds me that The Mighty Bowser LEGO set has been out since the start of the month for $270. I might feel dumb if I buy that, but I'd simultaneously feel like a badass. There's no badassery with this chronograph.)

Until October 26 (02:59 Eastern), the Nintendo eShop has a Try Before You Buy Sale, where you can get 30% off select games that all have demos. Unlike the Nintendo-TAG Heuer chronographs, which are designed for you to piss your life savings, this eShop sale actually tries to deliver a great value for customers.

Two games that I played the demos of and actually bought because I had a great experience with the demos (in other words, I would not have bought them otherwise) that are on sale now are DRAGON QUEST XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age — Definitive Edition and TRIANGLE STRATEGY. I highly recommend those two as the jewels of the current sale. By comparison, I bought Mega Man 11 despite not being totally impressed with its demo. Mega Man 11 is actually 66% off now. The final product is fine. I've been on a Mega Man OST music kick for the past several days, though not Mega Man 11's music.

Now, there are other games on sale right now that I refused to purchase because I played their demos. ARMS is the most notable example. I probably didn't get Yoshi's Crafted World because of its demo, either. Ah, and I see Fitness Boxing 2 is also on sale, and I wrote extensively about its demo. Since it's in the “I didn't get it” paragraph... you can figure out my take on it. I kind of refused to get Kirby Fighters 2 after playing its demo because they didn't put Wrestler Kirby in the demo.

I didn't get Metroid Dread either, though I don't think I would've even if I liked its demo. There's a whole class of demo where even if I really liked it, I still wouldn't get the full game. WarioWare: Get It Together! fell into that, though I genuinely disliked its character gimmick.

And then there's the case of Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX, where my article about its demo pretty much said I'd be totally happy buying it. And then... I never did. I don't really have an explanation for that. It's on sale right now like all of the other games I've name-dropped in this article, and yet I'm still not getting it. But if you never played the original, you really should play this DX version.

Do you feel like spending more money in these tough economic times? How much more? For a videogame on sale? For a chronograph priced at four figures or even five figures? Let KoopaTV know in the comments section, and maybe also chime in on if any demos swayed your decision to buy a game or not on the Nintendo Switch.

  1. People still wear watches, let alone 5-6 digit ones? I mean, for crying out loud, even Apple Watches are just THREE digits! Really, I just consider my smartphone as a de facto pocketwatch--it fulfills that purpose, among others.

  2. The one on the left doesn't really scream mario to me, aside from the little mariokart. I would buy a metroid watch, i don't know what it would look like but i would buy it. I'm not a big watch wearer, but I do like that Nintendo continues to make more expensive/higher quality merchandise. Not everyone wants a mario alarm clock...Although I wouldn't be opposed to it.
