By LUDWIG VON KOOPA - Game of THAT Year for 2014... and other awards!
On Friday, KoopaTV laid out our nominations for the 2014 Game of THAT Year award, along with other categories like Best KoopaTV Article, Best OST, and Worst KoopaTV Comment.
Over the weekend, our staff had intense debates on who should win, with some categories getting much more intense than others. And we couldn't "SETTLE IT IN SMASH" either. ...Well, I guess if we did, that would just mean everything I personally wanted to win would win. It's no secret I'm the best on the staff at Super Smash Bros., after all.
Speaking of which, did Super Smash Bros. For 3DS or Super Smash Bros. For Wii U win anything? You'll have to read on and find out, because you may be surprised.

The Best Social Media Platform, by unanimous consensus, was Twitter. The KoopaTV Twitter account has done amazing things throughout 2014, and Twitter has proved itself to be an incredible and powerful tool. It really has enabled KoopaTV to spread our message very far, and assuming we're not already on everyone's Twitter blocklist by now, will continue to do so. Notable accomplishments this year include being Followed by George Zimmerman and allowing us to get on the Neal Boortz show, along with something else we'll get to later in the article.
This year, Best PC Game actually goes to... A Koopa's Revenge 2, which was briefly featured on KoopaTV here! Congratulations to Lambta.co Games! Yes, A Koopa's Revenge 2 actually beat out Defend Anita Sarkeesian, our own KoopaTV production. You can play A Koopa's Revenge 2 here on the developer's website or on Newgrounds. It's a very meaty and difficult platformer where you play as a Koopa Troopa, which turns out to be a much better game than the games it's based off of. It's also better than the pointing-and-clicking gameplay for Defend Anita Sarkeesian, which is a pretty bad game, but an amazing experience.
The winner for Best 3DS Game is...Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy! Kirby Triple Deluxe gets an honourary mention for having Captain Vul re-appear as a keychain, using a Kirby Super Star sprite, and just being short of being #1 on everyone's list. Anyway, do we feel cheap and bad about having an enhanced port be the number 1 game of the year? Sure. But you should feel bad if Pokémon won instead, because that's just a remake. Think about it this way: It is the best way you can spend $30 on the 3DS. You might be able to spend $30 better in other ways, like paying your Internet bill. But think of it this way: Three games that, on their own, would be able to take Game of the Year or at least Best ___ Game. Now, combine them beautifully. It's irresistible, especially if you've never played them before. Which you should.
In the teaser before the pagebreak, we asked if Super Smash Bros. 4 in any incarnation won anything. It failed to win Best 3DS Game, but for Best Wii U Game... it succeeded! It's Super Smash Bros. For Wii U! The content and feel for the game is significantly expanded and better than the 3DS version, with the Wii U version being better in every way except Smash Run. It was also the subject of a very significant portion of articles for KoopaTV in both 2013 and 2014, so needless to say, we had a close eye on every new development.
Who was the Best New Character of 2014? Though it was a tough-fought battle, a certain staff member's adoration for Foxy the Vigilante (number 7) from Professor Layton Vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney won in the end.
And feminists wept everywhere. |
You wouldn't forget it either if you played this game. |
Your Game of THAT Year 2014 nominees ARE AS FOLLOWS: A Koopa's Revenge 2, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy, Super Smash Bros. For Wii U, Professor Layton Vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, and Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze! ...Who is the winner? Overcoming some odds, it is... Super Smash Bros. For Wii U! Congratulations! ...And if you are trying to glean that KoopaTV's staff believes that Super Smash Bros. is better than three Ace Attorney games, don't look too much into that.
Annoyingly, the Best Non-Ludwig KoopaTV Poster award was filled with conflicts of interest (everyone voted for themselves), so Ludwig decided it himself. ...And since he can't vote for himself (see the name of the award), the WINNER IS... RAWKHAWK2010! For his amazing, earth-shattering interview with Herman Cain. He also gave us the George Zimmerman trailer for Super Smash Bros. 4, but Sakurai sent that to us and Rawk didn't actually do anything. Rawk is currently unable to collect the award because he is on unpaid administrative leave, so the Rawk Duck in the KoopaTV office bathtub will receive it in his place.

Want to laugh? Read all the nominated articles in Most Humourous KoopaTV Article, but most of all, read Beware Barack O'Bowser. What happens when President Barack Hussein Obama "endorses" Bowser? Ludwig goes full-on conspiracy theory here, and ultimately advocates for a preemptive strike, courtesy of Koopa Kingdom, on the United States of America.
The Best KoopaTV Reaction Log goes to the Microsoft E3 Conference! This started off our E3 coverage for the year, and it was a bustling time with our whole staff. Rawk was particularly perky over Conker's appearance in Project Spark, and Ludwig got particularly mad at Kamiya with Scalebound. It was our first look at Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare (not that that means much, but hey, Mitchell), and over and over we were left wondering why games couldn't be on the Wii U. There was all sorts of great staff chemistry, too.
Even though the game itself failed to win Best PC Game, the Best KoopaTV Artistic Corner Contribution award goes to Play DEFEND ANITA SARKEESIAN right here!! Released right before 2014 ended, it trumps everything in the Artistic Corner category before it that year (and the Christmas Carol a day after). I mean, it's a whole videogame.
The Best KoopaTV Article Series goes to... #Miiquality Opposition! This goes back to Twitter being the best social media platform: KoopaTV was the leading (and probably only) voice in opposition to the anti-Nintendo #Miiquality movement brought about by Tomodachi Life. This allowed the #Miiquality movement to basically claim they're part of a "struggle". This series includes Gay Life Isn't Tomodachi Life, Don't Drown Out The Ideas!, The Homodachi Tale: GLAAD Vs. Nintendo, John Oliver Disgusts The World, The "Brothers" On Ellen, and Nintendo Is NOT Like Uganda!. Off-shoots include Transitioning Transgressive Artistry To Censorship. It was a turbulent and dynamic time in KoopaTV's history.
We also got to declare war on Nintendo World Report. We heard they absolutely crashed after that. |
And after that brain-wrecking decision, we move on to our final category, the light-hearted Worst KoopaTV Comment of 2014! This only took into account KoopaTV comments on KoopaTV itself, not our Twitter or Google +. Believe me, there were some AWFUL comments last year on those. You wouldn't believe the morons we got on #Miiquality, including people who posted completely inappropriate homosexual imagery. Still, we want our actual site to be safe for work, so the "winner" is... ANONYMOUS! (Surprise?) And what did Anonymous say?
"I hate how nintendo will do this to us n I might sell my games for the newer ones n also y do u know every lil thing in ur brain how r u doing this makes me mad sometimes"Very, very perceptive. Well, we hope we can more than match that perceptiveness with our own future articles and replies to YOUR future comments! (Which will hopefully be much better than this one. Maybe next year we can have a "Best KoopaTV Comment" award instead!)
For an easy list of winners:
- A Koopa's Revenge 2
- Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy
- Super Smash Bros. For Wii U
- Foxy (Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney)
- Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
- Super Smash Bros. For Wii U

Hmph... to think Foxy won over Barnham... :P
ReplyDeleteI'm okay with it.
DeleteObjection!
Delete...Yes, what is your objection?
Delete...well, I was going to mention Barnham's character development, but the writers did kinda throw their hands in the air and abandon it...
Delete...Right, Layton vs. Wright didn't really do a good job of character development when you think of all the characters in it.
Delete...You could even say that Franziska got more character development in her own game than anyone in Layton Vs. Wright. :O
(Which is why it didn't win Best 3DS Game. ...Not even close, actually.)
