(Round 2) Ludwig's Best. Game. Ever 2015 Votes

By LUDWIG VON KOOPA - From 128, we have 64. DIVISION by two!

We are lots of steps closer to figuring out what the Internet (or at least GameFAQs) will consider to be their BEST. GAME. EVER. ...Eh, we can probably take a good guess that it'll be a certain game involving a musical instrument, sages, an overly difficult submerged temple in a lake, and a stormy windmill.

That game won't be the one I'll be supporting (well, I'm voting for it this round, but still), and this is all about who I'll be voting for, not who I think will win.

I don't even remember what font I used for the rounds, so I'll just take the 2 they got. What will happen in round 3?
You can vote every match here when it's up on GameFAQs. Four matches every 24 hours. (One division a day.)

See my Round 1 picks here. Many of them didn't make it to Round 2, including some of the games I would take to win their divisions. (Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney!) But hey, sometime you'll get my pure favouritism bracket. For now, we're still in reality.

Ludwig has a confession: He accidentally voted for Super Mario RPG over Oblivion in Round 1. It was some sort of instinctive choice! Otherwise, he voted in every match and voted exactly what he said he would.

      Oh, there are definitely differences in how I'd vote, but I'm not sure any are worth an argument since I understand your reasoning and know I wouldn't change your mind. I'm curious about three, though:

      Why do you pick MGS V over Dark Souls?
      Why Majora's Mask over FFXII? I thought you disliked Majora's Mask.
      Why Red Dead Redemption over Shadow of the Colossus?

      I don't particularly care for MGSV, but I don't like how everyone fawns over Dark Souls as this magnificent thing.

      Literally did not remember which one was FFXII. (Or FFXI, for that matter, though that's not running.)
      Besides, I don't hate Majora's Mask.
      I felt weird saying I'd vote for FF6 over ALTTP so I wanted to make up for that somewhere.

      ...Not sure. I might change it if you do wanna argue that. :o

      ...Please tell me you have actual reasons to dislike Dark Souls, and that you aren't one of these people who hates something just because it's popular.

      FFXI is the first Final Fantasy MMORPG. I haven't played XII yet, so I can't say much about it. I had the distinct impression you had issues with Majora's Mask, though.

      Well, I haven't played either RDD or Shadow of the Colossus... but in general I vote against open world games like RDD, with some exceptions. XD Shadow of the Colossus is on my list of games to play in the future, while RDD is not. I don't have a compelling argument, it just seemed like a curious choice.

      I don't like games that exist just to be a grueling experience!

      I do have issues with Majora's Mask. Don't get me wrong.

      I don't have a compelling argument for RDD. Or a non-compelling one. I just laughed when Wander was in the last GameFAQs character contest and no one knew who the hell he was, even people that played the game.

      ...So if someone enjoys a challenge, that makes the game bad? Difficult games shouldn't exist? Or are you saying there's no appeal to Dark Souls other than its difficulty?

      People give Dark Souls accolades because of its difficulty, since they feel disenfranchised by how easy a lot of other games are these days.
      I'm not saying all hard games are bad! (Hey, I never said anything was bad!) But there are design considerations with difficulty, and I don't agree that being hard (outright sadistic design choices) automatically makes it good design.

      ...So, do you dislike other things about Dark Souls? :P Because I don't see the problem with people enjoying a game's difficulty, especially when many other games are easy, unless there's nothing else redeeming about it. People like Dark Souls for its world, lore, secrets, and yes, its difficulty. Particularly, many fans like that it's a challenging game without (usually) being cheap or unfair. What about Dark Souls's design turns you against it?

      I don't like trial-and-error based gameplay.

      If you're smart, cautious, awake, and observant enough, you should be able to do anything in the first few tries in a videogame! Dark Souls purposefully undos progress you make! It's like a much more tense and extended version of if you walk on the screen the wrong way everything in a 2D Mega Man game respawns and chases you. That's somethin' I never liked.

      And hey, Metal Gear Solid V isn't a slouch.



      By the way I should probably change my vote to Shadow of the Colossus since I actually want to see it go against Metal Gear Solid.

      It is not trial-and-error. It is risk-versus-reward. I don't know if I'd have enough patience for the boss fights, because I get frustrated with super-hard bosses, but the rest of the gameplay looks enjoyable to me.

      But then, I like fixed save points and the danger of losing progress if I'm not cautious, so maybe I'm just weird. :P

      Oh? Which do you think would win?

      So can you point to people that have gone through it on their first try? :o

      Because people do take the cautious approach, you know! And have reported failuuuuure.

      I think Metal Gear Solid would win, but Shadow of the Colossus had this gauntlet of Metal Gear Solid 4, Metal Gear Solid 2 and Metal Gear Solid 3 in the 2010 Game of the Decade contest. The bracket was set up so people could see the hierarchy of the Metal Gear Solid games, but Shadow of the Colossus just beat 2 and 4 and lost to 3.

      Might as well let it fight 1.

      "Gone through it" meaning someone who played through Dark Souls and never died?? Uh... no... it's not that sort of game.

      Maybe we should agree to disagree. :P You're never going to convince me that Dark Souls is bad just because you might die a lot. If I thought that was a bad thing, I'd never play survival horror. xD

    A little disappointed that Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney didn't make the list, but what can I do but object?

      Phoenix Wright did an important thing, which was expose Skyrim to be really weak.

      Skyrim couldn't even double Ace Attorney, and Skyrim is supposed to be the strongest Western game in the bracket! Unless Skyrim really is that strong and Ace Attorney did pretty well.

      Meanwhile, Castlevania tripled Trials and Tribulations.
