Candy™ Crush Saga™

By LUDWIG VON KOOPA - You silly mobile gamers.

KoopaTV has made clear its disdain for mobile gaming already. I believe we implied all mobile game players are perverts in that article... or something. Anyway, this article is about King, the... king of the mobile gaming sector. So if Gameloft is lord of the perverts, King's dominion must be over sex offenders. ...I don't know what I'm saying anymore.

So King trademarked the word Candy, and they also trademarked the word Saga. Problem? Yeah, there's an obvious one. And they're also enforcing those trademarks.

Let me be clear here: I am definitely in favour of companies being able to protect their intellectual property. I've expressed that in the context of quashing annoying Let's Players and saying that going to China isn't helpful. I'm also aware that all of the developers taking advantage of mobile gaming's perverted base want to cash in on King's success. But trademarking Candy and Saga? What?

I mean, what about Saga? ...Okay, who cares. But what about SaGa from Square Enix? People actually care about THAT.

We all want to know what court out there actually allowed this. And more importantly: What of "Crush"? That's also already a game, it even got a 3DS port named Crush 3D that performed terribly. There is no game called "Candy", but this destroys Candy Kong's chances of ever getting her own game.

I'm fine with that, actually.

So the question is now: Will King try to enforce their trademarks in the other sectors of the overall videogame industry? PC gaming? ...Or our precious consoles and handhelds? They may be able to bully those cashless mobile game companies into submission, but I think they'll have quite a bit of trouble with the well-equipped legal teams of the major, economically-matured console game publishers. And then they can make a game out of it called "King Crushed Saga". Made by SEGA. Why? ...I mean, the names are pretty similar anyway. Imagine if instead of starting off as "Service Games" they were... "Sadistic Games"! That would've eventually explained Sonic 2006, right?

Ludwig hates mobile gaming, and recently bashed people who described what they used their iPhones for (mobile gaming). For more information on his console gaming activities read the rest of KoopaTV. And Follow him on Miiverse at NNID PrinceOfKoopas!
