KoopaTV's Sporadic Live Reactions to Nintendo Labo

By LUDWIG VON KOOPA - Well... okay.

On Facebook earlier today, Nintendo published this post:

Tune in here on Facebook or at youtube.com/nintendo at 2 p.m. PT/ 5 p.m. ET to discover a new interactive experience for Nintendo Switch that’s specially crafted for kids and those who are kids-at-heart.”

So I'm going to write my whole thoughts and expectations on this in tomorrow's article. This one is just Rawk and I live-reacting (at different times) to what is a 3-minute announcement video. Let's just say, in typical Nintendo fan fashion, people (but not yours truly) were hyping this up to be something it was never going to be.

Find out what Nintendo Labo is by watching this and reading our raw reactions:

[5:00 PM] RawkHawk2010: Dunno where to go.
[5:01 PM] Rawk
Hawk2010: 5:00 PM and all the sites just say it's happening.
[5:01 PM] RawkHawk2010: http://www.nintendo.co.uk/Misc-/17-01-2018-1328637.html
[5:01 PM] RawkHawk2010: "10pm UK time"
[5:02 PM] RawkHawk2010: @Vortex is it 10pm your time?
[5:04 PM] RawkHawk2010: Oh, found it.
[5:04 PM] RawkHawk2010: https://twitter.com/NintendoUK/status/953748834437517312
[5:04 PM] RawkHawk2010: Screw Nintendo UK for making this hard.
[5:04 PM] RawkHawk2010: Well, guess I'll watch.
[5:05 PM] RawkHawk2010: um
[5:05 PM] RawkHawk2010: what the fuck is this
[5:06 PM] RawkHawk2010: Was that Project H.A.M.M.E.R. but cardboard?
[5:07 PM] RawkHawk2010: Well.
[5:07 PM] RawkHawk2010: Gotta say.
[5:08 PM] RawkHawk2010: This marketing looks as Fake News as Odyssey's x100.
[5:10 PM] RawkHawk2010: It's like those first Wii trailers where they had people diving behind couches to play Metroid Prime.
[5:19 PM] RawkHawk2010: Oh, not Project H.A.M.M.E.R.
[5:19 PM] RawkHawk2010: Project Shield.
[5:19 PM] RawkHawk2010: Or whatever that thing demo'd with Star Fox Zero was.
[5:20 PM] RawkHawk2010: so yeah, um......
[5:21 PM] RawkHawk2010: Yay fragile cardboard.
[5:22 PM] RawkHawk2010: And this is gonna be undersupplied as shit you just know.
[5:22 PM] RawkHawk2010: A SCALPER'S WET DREAM
[5:25 PM] RawkHawk2010: I've already done a cardboard suit on my own time might I add.

Nintendo Labo cardboard conveyor belt ESRB rating range
If you're wondering why this has an ESRB rating and why it's a range, the Variety Kit is rated E for Mild Cartoon Violence,
while the Robot Kit is rated E10+ for Fantasy Violence.

[5:39 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: "Nintendo Labo"
[5:39 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Is this a Nintendogs sequel?
[5:39 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Nintendo Laboratory?
[5:40 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Cardboard piano?
[5:40 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: So is it Google Glass?
[5:40 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Erm, Google Cardboard?
[5:40 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Or whatever it was.
[5:40 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Dunno, never used it.
[5:40 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Fishing rod.

[5:40 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: ......Gizmo.
[5:41 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: So Nintendo wants you to build your own peripherals?
[5:41 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Is this cheaper than spending $70 on a Pro Controller?
[5:41 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: "MAKE"
[5:41 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: "PLAY"
[5:41 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: "DISCOVER"
[5:41 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: Is the bgm "whoa oh oh oh oh oh" or "labo labo labo labo"?
[5:42 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: ..........I don't get it.
[5:42 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: April 20. (4.20.2018)
[5:42 PM] Ludwig Von Koopa: They're selling cardboard?

Stay tuned for a full written article analysis of the Nintendo Labo! Coming to a weekday very near you. To answer Ludwig's question in the log, it is as expensive or more expensive than purchasing a Nintendo Switch Pro Controller.

For a videogame-related Nintendo Direct, click here for the Nintendo Direct Mini. It was also done sporadically.
Here is the full, written article analysis of the Nintendo Labo, which goes into much more detail than this reaction log does.
As you may expect, Nintendo's future Labo overview videos go into more detail than this one and are lengthier.
The Nintendo Labo has been released, and opinions have totally changed.

  1. It doesn't seem bad for something marketed toward kids, but those prices! The robot especially seems overpriced for what you get, unless the robot games are REALLY fun.

    1. I can't wait for Kimishima to talk about this in Nintendo's quarterly presentation coming up.

  2. My biggest hope is that it really is just worth $10-$20 for the cardboard, and the game itself is worth the full $60 admission. Otherwise, it's possible (and I see it happening) Nintendo will make this into a franchise, with other packs like "Clockwork Pack," "Vehicle Pack," etc..

Otherwise, I'm actually excited. The thought that Virtual Reality is a thing on the Nintendo Switch surprises me!

    1. ...Despite me name-dropping Google Cardboard, this does not qualify as "Virtual Reality".

I strongly doubt that the software will be worth the $60 admission, but I will discuss that for tomorrow.

    2. I heard from the France IGN website that the software will be sold separately from the cardboard... but I wouldn't put my money on it. (http://fr.ign.com/nintendo-labo-nintendo-switch/33103/news/nintendo-labo-annonce-pour-inventer-de-nouvelles-facons-de-j)

What I WOULD put my money on, is the fact that New Yorkians and San Franciscians will have the opportunity to try it out, but it's mainly for parents and their BABIES! (https://labo.nintendo.com/events/)

    3. ...yeah I can't read that.

Nintendo should do product-related announcement details from their own website and not through random publications, dammit.

"Have one or more kids ages 6 to 12?"
      Not a BABY.

    2. Well, I'll publish a more thoughtful analysis tonight and maybe your analysis can try to approach mine in thoughtfulness.

    3. I don't see how it could get better than my analysis.

    4. It's better than your analysis, even if you disagree with it. (There shouldn't be anything controversial in mine, though.)

    5. my analysis didn't take two days to formulate.

    6. It wasn't two... it was like... one and a half.

Analyses aren't measured by time taken to compose them, but by their content.
