Mid-Evolutions of the Starters in Pokémon Sun and Moon!

By LUDWIG VON KOOPA - PLUS, massively multiplayer online-esque quests.

I understand I'm late here, but Tuesday and Wednesday had really important articles I had to get out first before I could talk about this significant bit of Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon information. If you haven't already seen it (and I had not seen it before tonight) then you're in a pretty small club, since the video has over three and a half million views on YouTube. ...Actually, that's in-line with the other video releases The Pokémon Company International has done, so whatever. I'm redundant. Just covering my bases. Embed, go:

You haven't forgotten Rowlet, Litten, and Popplio, right? Good, because now they have evolved one time each. While not every KoopaTV staff member who originally took sides on their favourite Alola starter is available to comment (in fact, none of them besides me are available as of writing this paragraph), I'll speak for myself.

I still want Rowlet. Badly. Believe me. And Dartrix strengthens my starter Pokémon decision. He's a significant improvement over the disaster that was Quilladin.

Dartrix, the evolution of Rowlet, easily looks like he could be in Animal Crossing. That's good!

Dartrix has a personality I can identify with, as well:
“Revealing a certain snobbiness in its personality, Dartrix cares a great deal about its appearance, grooming its feathers in every spare moment. In truth, it’s also a bit of a birdbrain, with a tendency to bungle things up. Once it makes a mistake, it sometimes gets into a desperate struggle to gloss over the situation and ends up making a bigger mess than ever.”
That's BASICALLY me. I am the Showy Anti-Hero, after all. Besides the personality bit, Dartrix is even more like Wing Kirby than Rowlet is! That's cute.

Okay, Rawk finally showed up. His favourite was Popplio, and his opinion on Brionne is:
“Don't like it. It's NOT because it's indistinguishably feminine or whatever. I like girly Pokemons [SIC]. Brionne's problem is that Game Freak is like... making sure you know it's female and that there's absolutely no question about it. Hence the pink eyes. That doesn't even look girly. It looks like disease. I'd like it more if not for the pink eye.”
Well, I like Brionne. Not as much as Dartrix, of course, but I'll defend Brionne against incoherent rants such as whatever the hell Rawk just testified.

So if I make Brionne's eyes white like Popplio's are, Rawk should like this more?

Torracat isn't controversial, I guess. Moving on.

The Festival Plaza is ran by Captain Sophocles, otherwise known as the Electric-type specialist Trial Captain. It's also really cool and seems to make the game more of an MMORPG. There's local, friend, and global MISSIONS you can do with other trainers in this place. Some of these are going to be the kind of massive community quests that you'd get in real MMORPGs, like “Catch as many wild Pokémon as possible” within a time period. (The website's sample goal is 900 million.) It reminds me a lot of Unova's Entralink, except better.

The Festival Plaza also features CLONES of yourself randomly TELEPORTING next to you, in possibly unlimited quantities.

The Poké Pelago feature, which is the one where the Pokémon in your PC can go on their own island adventures and be productive, is something that I think is really cool. It goes further to break apart the notion that Pokémon are just disposable tools that you stuff into a computer and never think about again. These Pokémon's lives do not just end, rotting in a box, after being forcibly captured by their trainers... it really is a new life for them, rather than a death sentence like in previous generations.

Mega Evolutions are back, but in a “they're compatible with this generation” way, not a “we're going to keep plaguing you with them” way. (I guess I was wrong in believing that their implementation wasn't something to fear.) And then we have Ash-Greninja in a special demo for Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon that gives me chills because it reminds me of the Omega Ruby Alpha Sapphire Special Demo codes. Those were impossible to get rid of and just the thought makes me angry. (You can search KoopaTV history where these things keep multiplying in population.)

This Special Demo is to be released on October 18 on the Nintendo eShop, and will be its own original little story featuring Ash-Greninja. (A Greninja with the new Battle Bond ability.) There's a massive issue, though: Ash-Greninja is that way because of its special bond with Ash Ketchum. HOWEVER... Ash Ketchum is nowhere to be found, yet Ash-Greninja is still a thing.

Ash Greninja Pokémon Sun Moon Special Demo Battle Bond
“Ash-Greninja has powered up thanks to the strength of its bonds with Ash.”
Problem: The Trainer in question is clearly not Ash. It's a little Alolan girl!

That's it for the trailer video. It was three and a half minutes long, which makes it quite long for one of these. That's fine. Lots of content to discuss!

...And yet, there's even MORE content they didn't fit in the video that I want to discuss. To keep it short, I just want to make one point regarding the renovated Pokémon Global Link. There will be QR Rental Teams, which are made by other players, and seem to function as a kind of Battle Factory thing. You can use them to battle other people. This is perfect for people who don't like the actual work of raising Pokémon, but want to battle anyway! (Me.)

To summarise: There's a lot of announcements and new features in Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon, and they're a net positive as long as you don't cause totally weird inconsistencies, like clones and Ash-Greninja.

Ludwig hasn't really watched all that much of the Kalos Pokémon anime, so he doesn't have a connection or a bond with Ash-Greninja. And why should he? Ludwig is not Ash. That's a pretty icky thought. Ludwig will instead have a bond with his Rowlet/Dartrix!

Ludwig also plans to have a close bond with the Rotom Pokédex.
He also wants to have a bond with Tsareena, a Pokémon announced a week after this article!
The Special Demo Version is out, and Ludwig goes into great detail about his experience with it.
But what do THESE three Pokémon evolve to? Well, here are the final evolutions.

  1. Dartrix has Edgeworth style feathers that mimic hair. Soon we can have a whole Ace Attorney theme team that isn't a huge stretch (just because it learns vine whip/power whip does not make is a good Franziska representation. Swellow for the back feathers looking like Phoenix's spikes, Gumshoos for that name, Edgeworth Dartrix for the reason mentioned, Glaceon for Maya Fey due to the hair resembling each other.

  2. In the next Ace Attorney game, Phoenix will literally be a bird.
