This Holiday Season, Give an eShop Gift

By LUDWIG VON KOOPA - The season of giving. And... maybe giveaways?

If you didn't remember it was my birthday on December 13 (that specific date referenced on KoopaTV as late as November 21 and directly talked about December 13, 2013), it is not too late to give me a "Happy belated birthday!" message.

...Really! Take to the comments section and be nice.

I made a nice and witty Miiverse post and everything using the power of Super Smash Bros. For Wii U and its screenshot tool.

Super Smash Bros. For Wii U Bowser Ludwig Von Koopa happy birthday present Blue Shell
“Well, today (12/13/14) is my birthday.
King Dad got me a lame gift, so let's see wot y'all got!
*sigh* I hate gettin' older...”
Except this article is not about my birthday, although it is related.

I'm fortunate enough to know some very wonderful people, including someone who gave me a download code for Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity. (A $35 value!) If that someone wants to take credit and plug herself for being a horrible person for what amounts to funding a villain, she is more than welcome to also take to the comments section. How did she do that?

As that url implies, she bought the download code off of Nintendo's website, which has been relatively recently updated to allow that. We already wrote about this here.

Well? With this tool, there are little limits in the way of giving loved ones and dear friends a considerate gift this holiday season. Nintendo even encourages gifting:

Nintendo advocates gifting eShop download codes
Which is exactly what happened.

Not all games are available, but you can still do the traditional method of buying Nintendo eShop cards and just giving people the redemption codes. That's the digital equivalent of giving someone cash as a gift, which is the best gift (hence the "Money" recommendation for what KoopaTV suggested for Christmas last year). Cash is like a Ditto: It can transform into any desirable thing you want.

You might actually have a lot of redemption codes sitting around you don't even know about. Remember the Wii U Digital Deluxe Promotion? I didn't!

The Nintendo Wii U Digital Deluxe Promotion points summary
I must spend $13 on the Wii U eShop between now and December 31 or else I'm really screwing myself.

For people who own a Deluxe (black) edition 32GB Wii U, the Digital Deluxe Promotion is running out! That's where you basically get 10% credit back for every purchase you make. Example: I bought Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze for $50, and got 500 points for it. For every 500 points you get, you get a $5 code for eShop credit. Mathematically, this means that for every 10 cents you use to buy something, you get 1 cent of reward, dispensed in $50 purchase/$5 reward increments.

Important dates to remember, courtesy of a Nintendo-provided FAQ:

  • Participants in the promotion can earn points on qualifying purchases made between Nov. 18, 2012, and Dec. 31, 2014.
  • Codes for Nintendo eShop credit earned in the promotion must be received at the Deluxe Digital Promotion website by March 31, 2015.
  • Received codes must be redeemed at the Nintendo eShop for Wii U or Nintendo 3DS by June 30, 2015. Once codes are redeemed for credit in the Nintendo eShop, there is no deadline to use the credit.
  • What that means: Buy everything you have ever wanted on the Wii U eShop now, and be sure to register at ddp.nintendo.com before December 31 so you can be considered a "participant in the promotion". All purchases you have made up to this point will be retroactively credited to you even if you register only now! Go to ddp.nintendo.com before March 31 to turn your points into codes. And then use those codes before June 30, 2015. The added balance to your eShop account has no expiration.

Does this mean that KoopaTV might have another giveaway before June 30? Or does it mean that I will actually use my own codes for myself? Only time will tell, but we've had enough giveaways for a while, you leeches. ...Granted, two of those were for Pokémon Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire demo codes, which are the epitome of useless prizes. Don't give those things for a gift if you still have some or the recipient will (rightfully so) think you're an asshole.

Ludwig no longer has any ORAS demo codes to give out, so you should be safe from those. If you have ideas on what he should buy, feel free to provide them in the comments. He just wants to preserve the space on his Wii U without buying an external hard drive.

There is important information regarding the Deluxe Digital Promotion you must know here. Ludwig had to have three phone conversations with Nintendo reps to get it!
You no longer can give eShop gifts as of April 2016, thanks to a renovation.
Will there be a future renovation to bring gifting back?
Nintendo wants you to buy yourself a gift for your own birthday with a 30% discount.

    1. "(One point is equivalent to one cent.) For every 500 points you get, you get a $5 code for eShop credit."
You shouldn't have fired your editor. That's one point is ten cents.

      1. If 1 point = 1 cent,
        500 points = 500 cents
        500 cents = $5

      2. I think the problem here is that it takes 10 cents of purchases to get 1 point, and 1 point gives a reward of 1 cent.
        I'll edit for clarity.

I doubt RawkHawk2010 would have caught any of this.
