The Real Meaning of Toon Link in Smash

By LUDWIG VON KOOPA - Not just the conductor, either.

So we went to something as trivial as a new Pokémon getting revealed for Pokémon X/Y to a SUPER SMASH BROS. 4 character being revealed. And once again, Masahiro Sakurai SMASHES expectations. After all, the conventional wisdom was that thanks to a certain screenshot, Toon Link had no chance.

Hey, remember the Nook Wars back on the Nintendo NSider Forums? Like, they were famous enough that people not on NSider knew about them.

The screenshot that started it all.
The July 13, 2007 update for Brawl's DOJO!! featured Tom Nook as a background character in the Smashville stage. One side of the Nook Wars said that this disqualified Tom Nook from possibly being a playable character. The other said this didn't make a difference! Oh, and the other argument against Tom Nook is that the mafioso raccoon is from a franchise without fighting, so no Animal Crossing character can EVER get into a Super Smash Bros. game.

(Anyone notice that Tom Nook has gotten less relevant with every new Animal Crossing game?)

...Guess we all know now which side was right, six years later. Being in the background doesn't disqualify you. Toon Link from Wind Waker can stare at his Spirit Tracks counterpart despite them being in the same timeline and everything. I guess this really means Baby Mario can be in this game, despite my objections. This also means Toad can be in the game as a playable character, despite being Peach's B-move for over a decade now. Some half-hearted Super Mario 3D World promotion?

Perhaps Ridley could still even be playable, even if he's going to be a stage obstacle in the Metroid: Other M stage!

Ludwig didn't actually participate in the Nook Wars over at NSider, but he never wanted Tom Nook playable anyway. He preferred Mr. Resetti.

  1. "Anyone notice that Tom Nook has gotten less relevant with every new Animal Crossing game?" No.

"Toon Link from Wind Waker can stare at his Spirit Tracks counterpart despite them being in the same timeline and everything." He can't. The train conductor changes to a different character from the LoZ series (I don't know his name) if you play as Toon Link.

    1. Lemme explain: He's not the shopkeeper anymore, and he's not the one basically introducing you to town in forced cutscenes like he was in Animal Crossing in the GameCube. Paying off your debt is no longer a big focus of the game.

Alfonzo. This was written before we got that bit of news.
Still, Villager can stare at Villager when on Smashville.
